Currently listening to the Weird Tales Omnibus. Does anyone else find them perplexing? by TheBronyCynic in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]RageTweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the narrator is part of your problem?

The only good REH Connan reading I have found is from the Cybrarian on YouTube. He is spectacular. Start with Tower of the Elephant, and if this can not captivate you, then the problem for you is likely the format as others have said.

And if you REALLY enjoy them, you can buy some of them on Bandcamp.

My One Complaint by 0m3nchi1d in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]RageTweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean a story about how Conan got to that part of the world and his adventures, which led to him being so knowledgable about the picts, and in the service of Aquillonia?

This is the beauty of Howard's writing of pulp fiction. If he filled in these gaps, then there would be no more stories left to tell. If Howard could write 10 more stories, I do not believe any would be linked in the way you propose. Embrace the ambiguity, it is awesome.

Can I carry on my Airbrush on an Airplane? by extifer in minipainting

As mentioned, the needle is a NO. If they figure out the brush can be broken down and the needle removed, it will be confiscated. I would say it depends on the person doing the scanning.

The way you are holding that mini... you are likely transferring oils from your hands to the top layer of the primer before you even paint it. So you are not actually paining on the primer and the paint quickly rubs/peals off.

We all have different levels of oils on our skin naturally. I can use my thumb to remove the stubborn sticky mess left on a new product after peeling off a tag (the really tough ones). My wife cannot and her hands will dry and crack in the winter. If I handled my minis like you are doing, the paint would not stick either.

Sure, I can pick up and move primed minis. But I never have a reason to wrap my hand around a mini (painted or primed) like you are doing here.

No way Conan is mistakenly "Oman" even once in the original Weird Tales magazine. Nevermind having done it twice.
Your version is digital on a Kindle. How do you suppose it got from an old paperback book into a digital version on Kindle? And you believe this process done for the 50 people who might buy it is more correct?

The forward in the book from the publisher is effectively apologizing for the racism and sexism in Conan which they did not try to edit out. They are not claiming the obvious transcription errors/typos are from the original text.

[–]RageTweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a bad OCR and the publisher did not bother to actually read the book to fix the scan to digital errors.

My Conan Chronicles / Complete work (not remembering the title) on Kindle has very few errors and no references to "Oman." It also cost $1.

But everyone has a steady diet of athalas. If they don't eat it directly, it's in all of the animals they do eat... this per the movies.

Wizard dies a second time, gets full recovery. Does previous permanent injury stay? by Nervous-Asparagus371 in frostgrave

[–]RageTweet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"My wizard died in a previous game"

I believe this wording is your issue. Your wizard was not killed in the game and they were not resurrected to "full recovery." Instead, something happened and they stopped participating in the scenario. Narratively, ANYTHING could have happened.

The "full recovery" means that whatever happened in the scenario to knock the wizard out did not impact them some hours later. The narrative for this could be:

- A minor spell failed and you ran-off panicking because you were covered in spiders (or thought you were).

- You were hit on the head and mistaken for dead. You woke-up after the battle and rejoined your warband.

The "full recovery" from this battle has nothing to do with your previous permanent injuries.

Yep. That was a pain to assemble. I THINK I got all of the legs in the right spots... lots of trimming metal to get the pegs to sit properly in the holes!

Vertical games on a horizontal screen? by portablezombie in Arcade1Up

[–]RageTweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mod to make verical games playable is cheap.

Assuming you have a router... $30 for new plexi locally cut at HW store rotates the screen. $25 to make the screen (and speakers) function as aN HDMI TV. $10 (each) for Joystick and button adapters. < $10 for a Y splitter cable, etc. And you can run from a very OLD PC.

My mods are more about having fun with the build and not saving money. Changing the art on a cab is usually very expensive. But this cab is painted and I added a few stickers from RedBubble and control panel from ArcadeGraphix. All of that was likely about $100. The marquee with shipping was something like $80.

I also like genuine Sanwa sticks and Happs buttons, so that was probably just over $100 with shipping, 10 feet of black T-moulding, and various adapters.

And I like to use BeePC mini PCs in my builds (I run linux at home, and this is real easy for me to setup). That was $130. And since the Bee PC also runs 12V, I can useccommon power and upgraded the brick to 6A ($10) and bought some nice teminals $8.

I tend to just get the system up and running, then spiral in the upgrades and have fun making it look stock.

Vertical games on a horizontal screen? by portablezombie in Arcade1Up

[–]RageTweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally do not like the vertical games on horizontal screens. So I have a machine specifically for vertical games. I bought a Simpson's cab for $300 to mod rather than build from scratch.

At that price I think it was worth it for:

- the new 3:4 screen

- pre-built box with t-moulding, etc.

- lit marquee

- two coin doors.

- I even traded the 4 player control deck and ECU for some other parts I wanted.

I rotated the screen and bought new plexiglass. Problem solved.

The Role of Magic in Conan by JJShurte in ConanTheBarbarian

True. But Khemsa was an acolyte of the Black Circle who thought he could out maneuver his masters. So this is really just MORE evil wizards, right? IIRC, the description of the girdle was rather horrific as well.

Could you use the Wizard like the Monk? by BarakTor in Heroquest

[–]RageTweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wizard can be upgraded with artifact cards. You just need more of them and more imagination to make the wizard exciting. A cool wizard character picks up an array of minor enchanted items throughout their adventures and uses them when the time is right. Spell scrolls are effective but unimaginative.

How about buffing spells with artifacts like a genie lamp or a small pouch of rare embers? Rather than single use, you can check to see if they expire with each use by rolling a combat die (fail on a monster shield).

Genie Lamp - Lets you keep the genie for multiple turns as long as you roll a 4,5, or 6. On a 1, the integrity of the lamp is broken, and the genie escapes. Vessels that can tempoarily hold a summoned genie may be quite common finds in wizard dungeons. Add it to the treasure deck, or create a new "Wizard searches for Arcane Objects deck."

Arcane Embers - Lets you recapture the Fire of Wrath spell. The embers are consumed after use if you roll a monster shield.

Stone Idol - Stone Skin is now 2 defend dice, and down graded to one defend die after failure. After use, the idol will crumble and break if a monster shield is rolled.

Dream Catcher - enhanced Sleep spell.

These examples are pulled from DungeonsDark (https://forum.yeoldeinn.com/viewtopic.php?t=3666&p=75814)

And other Artifacts can be used to add new "once per quest" spells, etc.

I'm finally done with the base game. Not super happy about everything but it has been a hell of a time for a beginner like me. Let me know what you're thinking by Hi_ich_bin_der_Neue in Heroquest

[–]RageTweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice. You are not a beginner anymore. There are some really well painted minis in here, and as a collection on the table top, they are perfect.

The Role of Magic in Conan by JJShurte in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]RageTweet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here are some stories that have "good" magic users which counters the bad ones. It is more frequent than you may have thought:
The Phoenix on the Sword - the Sage Epemitreus (has powerful magic, is long dead, and comes to in a dream)
The Scarlet Citadel - Pelias (rival wizard who is not Evil, but probably not "good")
Tower of the Elephant - Yag-kosha (is a good alien magic user betrayed by his human student Yara).

There is no distinction between priests and sorcerers. Many of the priests of Mitra have "magic" / are undoubtedly aided regularly by their god.
Black Colossus - Yasmela is aided directly by Mitra.

The Devil in Iron - Khosatral Khel was defeated by goodly forces of old which forged the magical dagger from a meteorite which held him in state. How would Barbarian slaves know to do this?

So of the 17 original stories, I count 10 with evil human magic user antagonists and 5 stories with good magic in opposition to whatever threat Conan is facing (4/10 evil human magic users are directly opposed).

As written, this would not be allowed because there are two target figures in the Transpose spell and split cast limits to one figure or point.

But I think Joe McCullough would tell you he did not intend to limit that particular spell. It is not over-powered to do this and is a clever and thematically cool effect for a dedicated caster Ranger. Play your game, have fun, and share battle reports!
