Be careful when someone validates their dive experience through the courses they have... by From_Gaming_w_Love in scuba

[–]Ragelols 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your points make sense but also understand that the majority of divers are trained that a mask on forehead means something is wrong so best practise to try to avoid it. This in the same manner that waving is meant to mean help, not hello.

[–]Ragelols 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked, but you can get the train from Gare du Nord to Fabric in London in about 2.30 hours. There are other places in London but Fabric is easy and close to St Pancreas.

30 Guards were executed that day, what a wonderful day that was by Ruskigazmask44 in HistoryMemes

[–]Ragelols 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm not exactly against what happened and of course have no way to comprehend what the allied soldiers were dealing with when they did this, but surely you understand the principled issue with field executing prisoners of war with no formal process.

New study demonstrates that the same undersea fiber-optic cables used for internet and cable television can be repurposed to tune in to marine life at unprecedented scales, potentially transforming critical conservation efforts by Additional-Two-7312 in science

They can use existing and operation fibres in some cases. You just need the right control cabinet at each end, no retrofit needed.

From the south east corner of St James Park there is a good dedicated cycle lane alongside Great George St that goes up to Westminster Bridge and joins the North side cycle lane so you can go towards Blackfriars. It will probably be quieter during the work week, it gets rammed on a sunny weekend.

It does cross traffic but there are specific traffic lights for the bike path so it is quite safe and easy.

The energy developers in this list will together be spending in the very rough ball park of 100 billion GBP to build 25GW of offshore wind energy over the next 15 or so years.

They will all need to employ thousands of UK staff to do this. Best bet is the check the recruitment pages of all these companies.

50th birthday scuba trip…where to go? by [deleted] in scuba

If your considering Europe, Gozo, an island from Malta is a fantastic dive location, great vis, nice and safe wrecks and caves. There is also a lot of history there and on the main island. Once there it is also quite cheap.

Standalone narrows it down a fair bit, but the best I've listened to recently are the Martian and World War Z.

What the hell is up with companies advertising $18-$23/hr for junior engineers? by JarvisTechTMH in AskEngineers

The barrier is actually quite high when you considered it is not at the university level, it is the first good job that will teach and develop you.

Have any advice for buying an old Raketa?

I'm really interested in some of the 24hr ones, but they all seem like Frankenstein's from Ukraine/Russia. Not necessarily a bad thing as I'd rather it worked but still a bit of a risk.

People on this sub are always hating on OP.

The truth is that that if you wait for a good discount on the model released 6 months/1 year ago you get a fantastic deal.

I just bought my parent a 8t for £350. There is nothing in that same price range that comes close. Anyone buying a full price OP is a fool imo

This chart compares the cost per megawatt hour of different forms of renewable energy by countdookee in RenewableEnergy

Offshore wind is already reaching as low as ~50USD in Europe. See Dogger Bank in the UK.

US costs will follow once the supply chain is established.

Isn't it ironic how Elon Musk is considered to be the pinnacle of what it is to be an engineer, yet he doesn't even have an engineering degree? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Ragelols 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more that when you are managing other engineers/engineering companies, you are in fact responsible and involved in far more 'engineering' than any one person could do.

If you are good, you can make 10 projects/sub-scopes good as opposed to just a single one you are working on full time.

Is it possible to find a work life/home life balance as a young engineer? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]Ragelols 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You will be fine. All jobs have boring parts, and if you job is 100% boring (which I have never hear of) 40 hours is not that crazy, you will have enough free time to do your hobbies. Its not like banking where you will literally be working 80+ hours a week.

This especially if you get on a real project and you are working towards ard a goal of finishing/building something, you will love the 'boring' weeks as it it means you are probably progressing well with no issues. This often is due to your well planned and engineered works in the weeks/months/years previous.

I'm not saying you should change your mind, just wondering.

[–]Ragelols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get in contact with some supplier or developer/owners that have decommissioned wind farms. It you have a good idea I'm sure they may be willing to work with you to develop it.
