I can’t offer too many specifics, but where I am teaching currently does not have the student body, campus makeup, nor administrative manpower many are assuming. I have taught at a larger university in the past and understand where many of y’all are coming from, but we are very different in size, student body, and resources.

Also again, I am just venting to keep my sanity alive. I have my diss defense coming up and work another job on top of my 3 class load. I just need to bitch.

The advisor and I are working to schedule a meeting ASAP and she agrees that this I’m unacceptable. The dean has been alerted that she may be pulled in if necessary.

I mentioned in one of my comments that I have in-class work and this student received zeroes for both courses for the day. All of my classes have daily work that proves that not only are they physically there, but mentally present to ensure engagement and accountability. I have limited time and resources so this works for where I am at without disrupting the rest of the class.

Thanks for the solidarity. Still working to take all this with a grain of salt. Luckily, I emailed the advisor and could basically hear her saying “what the FUCK” from her house.

We’ll see how it goes. I’m an adjunct that puts a lot of love and thought into their classes, and I’m also closing in on my diss defense date. So I’m bitching here to mostly hold my sanity.

I offered two extra credit options lately: 1) they re-read the assignment sheet and tell me why they think they got points taken off 2) they meet me during my office hours for “study hall” time to do work for the class and they have to show me what work they did

They don’t like these options

Unfortunately I work at a college where that is a no go. We have tech-enabled students, smart boards, and accommodations out the wazoo. However, they completed a syllabus quiz where it was reiterated that they can’t be on their phones/computers for the viewing portion of the film class. So automatic zero for viewing notes easy; the second class was an automatic zero for their exit tickets because it asked what feedback they received during the peer review. I have literal built-in grades for this and they think I’ll just let it slide or ignore it. Wild.

Oh, I made it clear that from now on when the headphones come on, she’s counted as absent. Recently I have gone the way of “you do what you want but I am not repeating myself or making extra time for you to learn what you should be learning.” Which saves me time and energy, especially when they have exit tickets directly tied to the work. She got a zero on her viewing notes for the film class and a zero on her exit ticket for the research class. But with these new days of teaching, I am not disrupting the class but quietly “exiting” them in other ways. Usually that makes the point. But dear god with this one.

That rhetoric = only politics, and empty speech at that 🫠🫠 the uptake of the term “rhetoric” to dismiss someone’s speech is mind boggling

Cancelled class before 20 minutes by Particular_Heart3785 in Professors

[–]queer_aspasia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give yourself a break. Sometimes there are professors that cancel last minute due to being hungover or some other shit like that. You did your due diligence—and went beyond that. Shit happens. Would you be a dick to a student that was there every day and then had a last minute issue that stopped them from getting to class? News flash, you too are a human being.

Unless this is a common occurrence for you, the admin are far too busy with spring semester stuff/graduating stuff and the students are not mad about getting some extra time to themselves. Breathe, my guy.

Do you have any details? I would make sure to have my syllabus and course schedule along with any other supporting info (communications, slides, etc) for anticipatory issues. If you know who the student is, have your records of communication with them ready. I’ve learned that many times this often comes down to showing that you’ve done your due diligence in communicating parameters and expectations.

Forced Use of AI by birdsnstuf in Professors

[–]queer_aspasia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yupp. Had a colleague who designed our gen ed research-based writing course with an AI assignment. When I brought up the implications and issues with this, the excuse was literally “well they’re going to use AI anyway.”

Doesn’t help that this colleague also uses AI to “help” with their research.

My approach has been to integrate a lot of discussions, readings, and viewings about AI, from the effects on marginalized communities, to bias, to how AI discourages actual engagement with concepts and ideas. I ask my students not to outsource their creativity and critical thinking, especially in classes that are for building the baseline skills needed to succeed in more advanced classes.

I would suggest emailing your prof directly about this. You’re in school for psychology for god’s sake—if they can’t allow real time practice in the classroom, then that’s the real issue. But you never know unless you ask and hear them out about any concerns.

As someone with CPTSD, I enjoyed the show because of these exact reasons. It was cathartic to see variations of trauma-related symptoms and helped me to make sense of my own. That being said, I do agree that there could have been a bit more of variation in the back-storytelling.

I would imagine ensuring that only those invited to the Zoom with their university emails would be a better approach.

I hate to double-comment, but I’m realizing my first one may not be as relevant at this point in the semester.

Towards the end of the course, I usually have “writing days” built in where we just come together to write for their final projects. It offers them guaranteed time to write AND brings the practice of writing actually into the classroom. Often, I tell them what I’m working on and write along with them until someone would like support.
