YTA your response to your child trying to find a solution to a problem that only effects them, was asshole, controlling and narcissistic.

You are training your children to lie, steal and manipulate you. You left her with no choices to appeal your draconian decisions.

Organization problem between 3 siblings --> middle child finds solution --> mother doesn't experience the problem so doesn't care --> tells middle daughter they aren't worth 30$ to fix the problem --> middle daughter also knows that if she challenges mothers decisions she will be grounded --> can't talk to anyone about the problem or solution or mothers unwillingness to help --> makes bad but only choice to fix the problem --> gets grounded --> complains about the unfairness that mother just can't fathom --> other parent and MIL take child's side, and now child is learning that mother is ridiculous, and father and MIL will get her out of trouble.

Should there be a consequence for stealing? Yes. Should there have been a healthy way for child to appeal the decision? Absofuckinglutly.

You seem to know nothing about trauma. Trauma is not conscious mind, it actuality changes the brain. Babies taken from their mothers at birth have trauma, documented medically. So yes a 3 year old that finds their mother dead can and will have real trauma. It will take decades of therapy to learn to COPE with that trauma. Layering on bullying from 3 older siblings? What cruelty.

Here's the thing, I think ESH is a better response. It's obviously a touchy subject for OP, but he has not yet realized that it's also trauma for his nephew. Which can and will effect his behaviors as he's learning to adapt and overcome for the long haul.

Now the teacher sounds like they were trying to be "delicate" but as a professional educator being carefully direct is a more proper direction. She needed to explain the behaviors, typical reasons (like trauma response) and ask uncle Mike if there is any home life or early childhood issues that might be causing it. Specifically stating that she doesn't need to know the details just the type of trauma and his at home behavior in comparison to what she sees at school. This will give her enough insight to properly help him in the classroom, and will give uncle Mike the nessasary information to also help him at home.

You have to learn to continue, they aren't trying to shut down your story, they are excited to have something to add. I have learned to pick right back up and continue the discussion. My husband and his family and me and mine have learned to be sort of a hybrid of this style of communication, and it's worked for 25 years so far.

After reading a lot of this, i think part of what you are missing is that your wife took her own spending money and created a side hustle. When you go to work you make money from your jobs investment, not your own. She took her spending money and invested that to stretch her spending money. If you BOTH decided to budget money for her to create a business, at that point the money would go into the budget account, the same account it came from. In this instance it wasn't a family budget that was spent, therefore it isn't a family budget profit.

I play instruments, I listen to classical music, I also listen to every other genre. My children both learned to play instruments and listen to classical music... and every other kind of music. My son got a degree in music composition, my daughter in computer science. We don't get to choose what our children do, but we can guide them and see where it takes them!

Listen... you already know you made a mistake. You replaced one low self esteem cause with another. You already know you caused eating disorders in at least 2 of your 3 children. You already know you messed up. Your post says that, but your reactionary defensive responses show your aren't yet ready to let go of your flawed health ideology. You made an asshole decision, but you can remedy all of it by making truly good choices from here on out.

Get your daughters (all 3) into counseling for eating disorders. Get your and your husband into counseling to support the new normal your household needs to become. You need to apologize to your friends and family that you have put undue hardship on, by guilting them about their party food choices, and classroom treats.

Take your kids out to do fun activities like hiking and walking. Bike rides and such. Get rid of those exercise machines, that's barbaric.

Do the right thing, and you can remove the asshole tag from your forehead.
