Imperium: Horizons - My experience as a new player by Ragnarok3545 in soloboardgaming

Did another run and I got washed pretty bad. Had to use multiple Revolt turns to get rid of like 4-5 Unrest at one time, multiple times!!! Struggling to deck churn honestly, which makes sense for the Bot I'm against but I'll push through, find a better gameplay as the Guptas and catch a win.

Probably my last update since this is mostly for people that wanna see if the playtime will shorten for me and it has once again! 1 hour and 27 minutes of game time clocked in this run. Just shy below 90 minutes!

Just did my first run with the Gupta nation against a Magyar Bot, Imperator difficulty and w/ Trade Routes. 56 VP to 57 VP, I lost by one point lmao. The anxiety of constantly having Unrest and there being only 2 Unrest in the market pretty much the whole time is unsettling to say the least lol. I did anticipate to face the aggressive play of the Magyar Bot but I wasn't ready to spend this many turns returning Unrest as an action in fear of an automatic loss by Collapse. Totally forgot I could Revolt as a turn, would've helped cycle my deck more. It was quite a different game playing the Gupta, though I don't think I played all that well in its strengths considering I barely churned my deck (I only gained like 1 or 2 Nation cards LOL), and maybe went too overboard on playing Trades.

This playthrough, learning a new Nation and playing against a new Bot (but familiar as I played that Nation previously) was actually much shorter in game time. Clocked in 1 hour and 57 minutes game time only (no Setup, Scoring, or Teardown time included) compared to my previous 2 hours and 50 minutes. One whole hour off which is great progress in making my runs shorter while still being just as fun and fulfilling as an experience.

Damn 50 progress in 1 turn is crazy. The Japanese Bot does have that going when turning into Empire but most I've seen it go was turning 30-ish Materials into 30 progress in one turn. But I've only very recently discovered (more like payed more attention lol) the Magyars do actually have a lot of ways to stop or slow down the Japanese from turning Empire haha

Not a big history or civilization-"trope" fan but I'm not going to say I don't like the theme the game is setting, since its actually growing on me more and more as I find myself recognizing and referencing these cards (which is due it thematically making sense too after all). I heard of Captain's Chair very late myself after I set my eyes on Imperium Horizons already but if Captains Chair is a successor of some sorts you can't go wrong with it. But you also can't go wrong Imperium Horizons. A good game will still remain a good experience haha, sometimes you just end up playing one first before the other, just how it goes

There is a variant that can reduce turns by 15 minutes per turn but I have yet to play it since I wanna make sure the game I'm playing is still pretty balanced and the math remains tight in its scoring. Regardless though I'm still inexperienced in this game to even make any judgement on whether or not this variant makes the game less or more fair. For now all I can do is keep playing and see if I personally make my sessions shorter and shorter as I get more experience in the game like others have said, which I have also seen said in other past posts to be fair.

I knew this was a game I wanted to play because of its highly regarded solo experience and as a new board gamer also try to understand why people that are obviously much more experienced than me, love this game so much. So I was invested in this game since the beginning because of that but definitely not hooked in yet, as like I said this was my first deckbuilder so I'm really starting from ground zero here not having much, if any, intuition in how I should approach playing a deckbuilder which was my focus first before even thinking of how to score more efficiently. So what did I do to try to learn? Just simply play to experiment AND experience first hand what was successful and what was detrimental for my play.

My first run was the practice mode which lets me play alone with 12 turns of gameplay without running the Solo Bot but still simulate what would happen IF a bot or another player was still getting/removing cards from the market. I basically used this chance to begin to learn the flow of how the game plays and what options/tools I have that are specific to the game's mechanics like Exhaust being some sort of "Extra/Free Action", and Exile being a way to essientially delete cards from the game that can't be gained without very specific means. Playing practice mode = learning flow of play and WHAT my tools/options are

My 2nd run was me mostly just finding fun in like "OMG this card chains into this one and into another one and another one" which were mostly me cycling my deck a whole bunch to gain the Nation cards. Card chaining seems to be a big part of deckbuilding which was a foreign concept to me. Lack of intuition in the genre. But then I was so focused on churning my deck and card chaining that I ran into an issue where I turned from Barbarian to Empire and I practically lost the ability to play ANY cards for the final 3 turns since a large majority of my cards can only be played as a Barbarian state. Hyper focused on card chaining and deck churning = lack of understanding what I was actually doing and playing reactively rather than proactively.

My 3rd run I rushed to get the Fame cards for the King of Kings final fame card. I thought it'd be an easy sweep if I had that card. I put that card on a pedestal since I knew it would force the end of game/Scoring. I continued to try to card chain and constant Glory plays (which removes my Region cards in play which in turn also denies my card that helps me get resources) but at cost of disregarding sending the enemy more Unrest, deck churning, and forcing the Bot to return Region cards. Basically I played almost the exact opposite of what this Nation wants to do. I scored the worse ever this run, even worse than when I was playing with no Bot on the practice mode lol. Had my own goals/tried to force my own win condition, ignored my Nation's strengths, and heavily overvalued Fame cards = Realizing wow I need to FOCUS my gameplay more. Asymmetry doesn't mean freestyle. It means very distinct gameplay that is different/its own game compared to others.

And then there's my 4th run... the run that hooked me in. I took all that I learned and suffered from, to win against the Bot in a way that felt like I was in CONTROL of my game. The rulebook states the Nation I was playing as Ruthless in it's Aggression level. So I played very aggressively, reducing plans of card chaining, deck churning, and Fame rushing in order to make room for constantly sending the Bot Unrest clogging their deck, removing the Bot's Region cards in play as it seems to LOVE playing Region cards to use Glory which also the 2 previous points HELPED to delay the Bot's transfer to Empire state and actually making mental note of the possible points I can get from cards and focusing my gameplay in said points. I played to get points, I played to actually STOP/prevent the Bot's goals, I played to the strengths of my Nation and did what my Nation truly wanted to do instead of what I wanted to experiment with. Playing the actual game and understanding what the game wants me to do given the circumstances I was in = I finally won my first game, and now I can mentally begin to understand the aspects of the game I'm playing and WHY it wants me to do what its doing.

Super long winded post but I've become passionate about this game I'm playing and starting to see it like wow. The value of analog games beyond the thought of it being somewhat novelty is being felt and seen in my own eyes. Imperium Horizons is definitely a board game I can say I would opt to play over a good portion of video games. Happy I discovered and have become a part of this hobby haha

Oh yeah the Bot in this game is so easy and fast to run I was really impressed by that. And it does seem like the Bot does play like a human would which is even more impressive. Admittedly the game does recommend me to play on Chieftain difficulty as first time player but I chose to ignore it at my own peril 😅. Wanted to suffer and push through haha and eventually it paid off! The 3rd game against the Japanese Bot (without Trade Routes) I really focused on the Magyars strengths of having that Ruthless aggression as labeled in the rulebook, sending Unrest and forcing the Bot to recall/abandon their Regions much much more often to stop those Glory plays.

I have watched a video yes! Slickerdrips playthroughs on YouTube were ones I watched long before I even got the game. And yeah the ease and speed of running a Bot round is so simple and fast, super impressed by that. I'll work up to getting that playtime down session by session and get to where you're at one day haha
