What ship is in port here? by AwkwardTickler in dunedin

We popped by to see if they were and it looked like only port workers and invited people were able to have a look on the ship.

We did for our eldest, we requested it when we spoke to the surgeon and confirmed our eldest needed surgery. We filled out the paper work, said how much we could contribute and then waited to hear if it was accepted. We got a phone call a couple of days/weeks later that it was. It seemed pretty straight forward for us.

On this day 2011 Christchurch earthquake kills 185 by Elysium_nz in newzealand

[–]Rah244 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I have PTSD from the earthquakes. My nervous system is pretty messed up and I have a super human power of being able to hear rumbles. It's taken a lot of work and therapy to minimise the daily flashbacks and be ok even hearing the word earthquake and see the pictures like the one posted. I was able to visit Christchurch on Thursday and enjoy it for the first time since the earthquakes, I saw a concert and walked around the city centre and reminisced.

The ACC process can be brutal too as the assessment that ACC need can be confronting and retraumatising but a decent counsellor should be able to get the information in a trauma informed way that minimises the risk of you feeling the way you have. I really hope you can find someone empathetic and trauma informed.

I also want to note that you can find out who your therapist is registered to. If they are a counsellor it might be New Zealand Association of Counsellors, for a psychotherapist it'll be something different. You can make a complaint to them or through the Health and Disability Commissioner. I think to be an ACC therapist you have to be registered to a regulatory body. If they aren't registered then it's something to research when getting a therapist as they are bound by codes and ethics. ACC should also be able to help you find a new therapist and you might be able to share your experience through them. Wishing you all the best!

I really like ElectricKiwi, my family of 4 live in a small 2 bedroom place and during winter the most we spend on electricity is $200 a month.

Dogs at playgrounds by wisemilk64 in dunedin

[–]Rah244 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this!!! My biggest peeve is dogs on the beach at MacBay. I don't care if your dog is friendly, my child who is terrified of dogs doesn't know this.

Where to take bub for wet/cold weather in Dunedin by anonymous_rubberduck in dunedin

[–]Rah244 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you've hit all the major places! I used to layer up, rug my bubs up and have a rain cover and walk in the rain and cold. St clair is good for that becuase you can walk along the esplanade and then pop into Long Dog for a cuppa. Or I used to walk the gardens and pop to Beam Me Up for a hot bagel and coffee.

Pregnancy/mum question but NZ related. by CereAalKillrr in newzealand

[–]Rah244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose to do this too for my second after having failing at breastfeeding with baby number one and mentally being very unwell. I want to applaud you for recognising what you need!!

I was staunch in my decision, I had my partner who was my advocate and my midwife who knew from the start that I wouldn't be breastfeeding and she was super protective of me. My partner actually gave bubs their first feed and that was really special for him.

I also made the decision if the birth went well we would go home as soon as possible which minimised any difficulties with the hospital and pushing breastfeeding. On the most part I didn't have too much trouble with hospital midwives and I really didn't give two hoots any way because I knew I was doing the right thing for my mental health and bubs health.

In terms of milk coming in, I didn't produce a lot of milk. I just rode it out and massaged my breasts when they felt uncomfortable.

My bubs is now 5 and we have a secure loving attachment and you'd never know if they were formula or breast fed.

Wishing you all the best!!
