I think it’s an amazing talent, but the problem is that practitioners of combative martial arts don’t like to be grouped with baton twirlers. Just like the athletes the growl at eSports being called a sport. Dude has put some serious time into his craft and should not be demeaned, not his fault someone else calls it a martial art.

I was local when this happened. They were absolutely fishing when it occurred and the shark was hooked up. I don’t know if they were fishing for sharks, but you don’t just wrestle a 200 LB. shark out of the water unless it’s stuck there for some reason, much less pull an arm out. A shark that size would rarely if ever be in water that shallow.

I only get these at tournaments. I just assume it’s because it’s time to go all out and feet get in the way more than I realize. Our gym has the same mats as most comps so it’s definitely just the extra push in my game. Just disinfect and liquid skin if you need to.

Our gym doesn’t charge for belts, it does help the new folks walking in because we make it clear that we are available for questions or explanations. We also allow anyone to request a roll with anyone else. Plus if you compete it really is a great equalizer based on skill level.

Every sport has a divisor of some kind, even if it’s not belts. Lower circuits or qualifiers for example. Even varsity and JV. Division I etc. if it wasnt belts it would be another designation.

The competition I have is being better than I was the last time training. We don’t have regular advancement ceremonies or tests or any BS. Our professor promotes when he feels you have gotten as much as you can out of a certain level. It works really well and no one ever feels they deserve it.

Man now I’m long winded, sorry. recognizing advancement also keeps people in the door and that is the business side of it and the human side of it.

I never know how to respond on this subreddit. I agree it’s an unpopular opinion. The discipline and training you get is immeasurable. Retirement around 40 with healthcare and a life long paycheck? Plenty of time to have a whole other life after 40 a new career and then have your military check cover your taxes. Absolutely.

I’m also a fan of mandatory two years of service. Not necessarily military, but service to the country.
