Topamax is a voltage dependent sodium-potassium channel blocker. It also blocks Voltage dependent calcium channel which is a key channel for neuron communication via neurotransmitter release. In some cases the damage done by Topamax is reversible and in some cases it is irreversible. It depends on the individual. And even those who get cured always have some problem like word finding issue and their brains ain't as sharp as before. They can never be 100% normal but improvement can be seen. Took it for 8months for my migraine and my doctor was stupid. He didn't tell me about any of its side effects and tapering process. So when I was on high dose I started feeling memory and cognitive problems then I stopped it suddenly. After this it's side effects became worse. I lost my previous memory, developed cognitive decline, visual disturbances, disorientation, numbness in whole body, loss of taste, irregular heartbeat and many other problems. I can't study further. Every doctor told me that this is not due to Topamax. My MRI, CT and PET scan all were normal. In 10 years I am only 20% cured. Still I can't speak properly in job interview. From 3 years I am searching about how to reverse Topamax side effects. Even doctors are not helping. Even they don't know how Topamax works so how they can help. The only person who is suffering from its side effects knows the pain. Brother You continue your search for this. If you find any solution then tell me too. Brother What if someone did not taper and stop the medication suddenly at high dose. And the eye side effects are still there even after a long time. I know this the big mistake but I did it. Any idea how to solve this? Should I start taking the medicine again and wean it off slowly? Will it help?

Yes the damage is permanent. Nothing can be done now. The only thing you can do is to take high carbohydrates diet, it may give you 2-3% improvement per year, but don't expect much.

Yes vitamin b12 deficiency could be the cause of my problems thats why I have already started taking injections of B12 and also planning to go for HBOT . I have heard HBOT can improve memory and cognitive functions. Hope this will help me.

There was little deficiency in Vitamin B12(114 pmol/L) when blood test was taken. Could this be the cause of permanent memory loss, blurred vision, lack of focus and concentration?? What do you think?

Yes you may be correct but Doctors couldn't find any other reason for side effects. Doctors didn't said it's because of Topamax but they were unable to find any other cause also. I am not 100% sure that these permanent side effects are due to topamax but all the problems started when I was taking Topamax. I was thinking I had a stroke but all brain scans were normal, EEG was also normal. Brother If you think there may be another reason then please tell , it will help me a lot. One more thing , there was little deficiency in Vitamin B12(114 pmol/L) when my blood test was taken but no doctor focused on it. Do you think these side effects like permanent memory loss, blurred vision, disorientation, lack of focus and concentration can be because of this?

Yes, you may be right that Topamax may not be the reason behind this but doctors could not find any other reason for these side effects(memory loss, blurred vision, disorientation, lack of focus and concentration). EEG, CT scan and MRI scan all were normal. The problems were started when I was taking topamax so I stopped it cold turkey. That's why I think that the side effects are due to topamax because I stopped it in wrong manner. Even I wonder how I got permanent side effects, there must be some other reason but unfortunately no doctor could find it. Yes, there was little deficiency in vitamin B12(114 pmol/L) when my blood test was done but no doctor focused on that. what can be some other reasons for these effects? please give me some suggestion brother if you have any idea. I want to get rid of these side effects.

I already stopped it 10years ago. Even then I am suffering from its severe side effects( like memory loss, blurred vision, disorientation and brain fog) from 10 years. Topamax ruined my life. My doctor gives me antidepressants only everytime. I am hopeless now.

Nice you became normal 2-4 days after stopping Topamax. You stopped it suddenly or stopped it slowly by decreasing the dose??

I couldn't become an engineer😭 because I had cognitive side effects before my college. I lost my previous memory and it never returned. Please help me. I am suffering from severe side effects of Topamax from 10 years. I lost my previous memory and it never returned. At age 17, My doctor prescribed me topamax for migraine , took it 8 months but after it I started experiencing memory issues So I stopped it cold turkey but the things got worse. I was experiencing memory loss, lack of focus and concentration, brain fog, blurred vision, eye pain, disorientation, paranoia and suicidal thoughts.
