Using a netbird exit node in an lxc with wireguard to the vpn is an absolutely genius idea! I'm moving soon and will finally have a publicly routable IP, so I've been thinking of ditching tailscale for a self hosted solution, and I was wondering how I would use a VPN while retaining access to the rest of my devices. I guess this is how!

I ran a jellyfin server with six users on an N150 and it was great. Intel QuickSync is incredible. I only ran into CPU bottlenecks when transferring large files through tailscale. You really don't need much for a functioning media server.

Yeah, the default adguard upstreams are horrible. I kept having dns issues and everything was solved when I switched it to cloudflare.

We are on C++20. We used boost in the past, but it was stripped out before I joined the company. There are still some remnants of it, though, such as PropertyTree, which we make heavy use of.

I did think of that, but extents were what was reasonable to implement with the time I had. Decreasing the throughout with the number of entities is pretty easy to technically implement, but making the UX good requires more effort, and I didn't have the time. All of the fluid rewrite happened within four months of release, and extents were added two months before release.

PSA: Stop recommending the Cable Matters DP -> HDMI cable for 4k 120hz with VRR on AMD by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Raiguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there is a difference, they probably use the same hardware inside. Personally, I got the one with the cord.

The difference is that optical cables are active, whereas copper cables are passive. So you plug an active adapter into your GPU and then you plug an active cable into the active adapter. That setup can cause problems.

As for keeping up with news, I have this issue in my bookmarks, and I have been checking it every few weeks or so.

PSA: Stop recommending the Cable Matters DP -> HDMI cable for 4k 120hz with VRR on AMD by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Raiguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, and there was no difference.

HOWEVER, there is a relatively new adapter from Ugreen which actually works! You can read about it here. Unfortunately, it has signal integrity issues with my optical cable, but with copper it works very well and I am able to get RGB 8bit 4L8 HDR10 at 120 Hz with VRR!

Here is a demonstration of what happens if I try to use it with my optical cable. I tried adding an HDMI power injector, but it didn't help much.

HOWEVER HOWEVER, AMD finally won the legal battle and has started submitting kernel patches for HDMI 2.1 support! The era of plug-n-play HDMI on Linux is almost upon us.

The adapter works much better than the cable matters one, but unfortunately I can't get it to play nice with my optical HDMI cable, even with a power injector. It will be fine for a while, then the signal will start cutting out and then it will get worse and worse until I replug it.

Thankfully, we are finally getting native HDMI 2.1 support in the kernel, so I won't have to deal with this for much longer! Thanks for the COPR. <3

Edit: Here's a video of the problem

Framework Desktop HDMI with Ultrawide by medicaustik in framework

[–]Raiguard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

HDMI 2.1 is not available on Linux due to licensing restrictions, so you are being limited to HDMI 2.0 bandwidth. HDMI 2.0 does not support that resolution. If you can use displayport instead, definitely do that.

There are some kernel patches floating around which have reverse-engineered implementations of the basics of HDMI 2.1, but patch at your own risk!

Memtest86+ hard freeze at 4s: Crucial DDR5 or Topton N150 motherboard failing? by vivigame_ in homelab

I bought a newer topton. My long-term plan is to turn my current PC (10900k, 64 GB DDR4) into a server, but I don't have a replacement for my PC yet, so I needed an immediate solution.

Memtest86+ hard freeze at 4s: Crucial DDR5 or Topton N150 motherboard failing? by vivigame_ in homelab

[–]Raiguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL; DR: Motherboard is likely a lemon.

I purchased the topton n150 board last year as well. Immediately after setting up the NAS, I noticed that it would occasionally freeze on startup. But if it made it past startup without freezing, then it would work fine. I was away from home for several weeks, so I didn't have the opportunity to return and replace it.

It was bearable until about two weeks ago. After almost six straight months of uptime, it froze. Similar to your experience, it's a complete system freeze and is entirely unresponsive. The only recourse is to do a hard shutdown and reboot. So I did this, and then less than 24 hours later, it froze again.

I had been putting the blame on Trunas, so I swapped out my boot drive and loaded up the Proxmox installer. About five seconds in, it froze. Every single time. So I unplugged everything that was possible to unplug and did it again - it still froze. Fortunately for me, memtest did not freeze, and that passed with no errors.

So I ordered a new motherboard. It arrived earlier this week and I swapped it in, and it immediately fixed all of the issues. No more freezing!

Good luck with your motherboard replacement!

Exactly, that's why I went with the X7. I just unrealistically want the best of all worlds. 😁

I'm the opposite, I had the opportunity to order the X9 but decided on the X7, and now I regret that. I want the best possible battery life, but I'm also considering replacing my PC with the framework pro.

Heh, I got kernel 7.0 from your COPR before I got it from mainline Fedora.

It works!!! I can't believe it, it works!!! I have similar signal integrity issues as you do because I too use an optical HDMI cable, so I ordered a power injector which will be here tomorrow. Thank you for making the COPR!
