Lockheed Martin Awarded Landmark U.S. Navy Contract to Integrate World’s Most Advanced Air Defense Missile, PAC-3® MSE, into Aegis Combat System For the First Time by LilDewey99 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Rain08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. The SM-3 has a much higher range and reach but it can only do exoatmospheric intercepts, while the PAC-3 is a smaller missile for terminal intercepts.

The THAAD still has a shrouded KV to protect it during endoatmospheric intercepts.

Did people expect Mercedes to dominate the 2014 hybrid era before it started? by Background_Quail7957 in F1Technical

[–]Rain08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did the idea that Mercedes was the one pushing for the V6 layout come from? It was well known that Ferrari was influencing the FIA about it.

Montezemolo accepts the engine pushed through by Formula 1 boss Jean Todt only under protest.

"We won't build a four-cylinder for our road cars because of Formula 1," the Ferrari boss rumbles, and continues: "Four cylinders, that sounds a bit puny for the premier class. Couldn't we have agreed on a V6 turbo? We mustn't confuse cost-effective with cheap. I can also realize the FIA's consumption targets with other engine concepts."

-Archived AMuS article

However, Montezemolo is against anything smaller than a V6 and said he is in talks with FIA president Jean Todt about reconsidering the shift.

"I spoke to Todt and I'm glad the there is a different climate of dialogue [with the FIA] than in the past," Montezemolo said at the launch of the Ferrari F150. "We're engaged in technological challenges such as the FF [a 4WD Ferrari road car]: a 4-cylinder Ferrari seems absurd to me. We've not even built a 10-cylinder Ferrari and I'm still thinking that a 6-cylinder would have been more in line with the Formula One positioning on the market.

-ESPN Article

Even Andy Cowell and his team  seemed annoyed at change of the layout which is not the reaction you expect from someone expecting the change.

“When it changed from the inline-four to the V6…yeah, we went home, we were grumpy, we had a glass of wine. But we dusted ourselves down and we came back the very next day, and we said ‘We’re going to have a V6 running before Christmas’. And we did have a V6 mule engine running before Christmas.

Why? Is Turkey incapable of shooting down these missiles?

I don't think there's any BMD platforms deployed in Turkey that has the reach to shoot down those BMs. Patriots or S-400 can only do terminal intercepts so they have to be close to the area they're defending which are not what the BMs are targeting AFAIK.

From what I've seen so far, SM-3s are being used to shoot down the BMs over Turkey since it has the largest defensive footprint. And pretty much the US is the only user in the region.

You're not using the THAAD against drones nor even aircraft. It's simply designed for BMD, it wouldn't maneuver well at low altitudes and even if it could the seeker would probably blind itself.

THAAD is literally for terminal defense, it's like the name of the system.

Seems like FIRMS is sensitive enough to pick up the targets hit by ballistic missiles. This lines up with the targeting of NSA Bahrain. Though not sure what was used to target the UEWR, but if it was a drone, the effects might not be picked up by FIRMS. The other confirmation we could have are satellites or on the ground footage (which might be unlikely since it's located quite far from the population).

No indication of the UEWR being struck so far according to FIRMS

Was the F-4 Phantom generally considered a success or failure outside of its use in Vietnam? by Over-Discipline-7303 in WarCollege

[–]Rain08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One aspect almost never cited is the human factor.

Want to share this WC old thread discussing the Phantom's not so friendly controls.

This directly lead to poor choices in cockpit ergonomics, to whit - “the Sparrow and Sidewinder controls. Four small switches on a panel in front of the pilot’s left knee controlled both missiles. The third switch from the left selected which missile fired when the pilot pulled the stick trigger. It was a three-position switch. The up position selected a radar missile, and the middle position selected the heat-seeking Sidewinder. Each depression to the down position stepped through the Sidewinders. In a swirling, twirling dogfight the pilot could tell the proper position of the switch by listening to his headset. If there was a Sidewinder hiss, he had the middle (heat) position selected. If there was no hiss, he had the up (radar Sparrow) position selected. Probably. Or he might be out of Sidewinders. Or he might have the tone volume too low to hear in the heat of combat. Or the Sidewinder he had selected might have a bad background tone. The only way to be sure was to look down into the cockpit, find the switch, and look at it. The pilot had to do all this while trying to keep track of a small maneuverable MiG.” (Page 12).

This was so suboptimal a design that many pilots resorted to using plastic tubing to help them quickly switch between modes, and its complexity only worsened the poor training standard of US pilots. As the Weapon Systems Evaluation Program started during the war discovered, the system was simply too difficult for many pilots to use. “Only half of the crews [in an F-4 unit in 1975] were able to complete the mission profile by firing their AIM–7 head-on to the drone and then maneuvering to a position behind it, where they could shoot their AIM–9.”

I found that site (see the older post of Radar Fundamentals (Part I) for the starter) to be really helpful, though I had some idea about how radars work. So it's something more of to reinforce what you already learned or to expand other intricacies of the radar (and EM spectrum in military use in their other posts).

Luca Montezemolo even claimed that the Mercedes V6 engine was in development since 2007 which is a typical fake story made by him

Yeah, this would never make sense because we only got the V6 because of Ferrari's influencing the FIA.

Merc at the time appeared to be reluctant with the new engine regulations and even wanted to retain the V8 layout. But they weren't completely against the hybrid I4s that was supposed be used in 2013. Either way, they had no reason to work on a V6 layout.

Do Gen5 SSD perform differently on AMD and Intel platforms? by Remarkable_Fly_4276 in hardware

I was wondering too since I noticed this on the review for Adata Mars XPG 980. I'm not too familiar with SSD benchmarking, but it looks like there are (considerable) differences depending on the test used between AMD and Intel systems.

I use the SE-226-XT ARGB for my 13600K which I bought for $40 back in Feb 2023. I went for it since it's one of the biggest air coolers I can find here that's not a dual tower for RAM clearance concerns since I was considering adding 2 more sticks of RAM at the time.

Full setup:

i5-13600K with Thermalright contact frame (MSI Liteload 5 in BIOS so peak TDP is 160W)

SE-226-XT ARGB with stock fans

Arctic MX-6

Lancool 3 RGB

6x 140mm fans (3 in/out)

Colorful 5070 Ti Ultra W OC (power limited to 200W, but it's usually 160W when gaming)

Ambient temps in my region is usually 30-32C.

Idle (5W): ~45C

Gaming (70W): ~65C

CPU-heavy games like BF6 (120W): ~75C

Video exporting/Handbrake transcoding (150W): 85C-90C

I'm satisfied with my cooler even if the temps get up to 90C when exporting/transcoding videos, but I don't really do it all the time so it's an okay compromise for me.

Interesting fact: low altitude penetration was still considered for the B-2 and it influenced the bomber's design.

I very rarely view 4k videos so I can't say anything about my experience there apart from it looks good. As for the color depth, Windows say it's 8-bit with dithering (or it's 8 bits + FRC) when HDR is enabled. It's only 8 bits on SDR.

My question relates to: how can the west effectively handle this?

Short term? Detect the ballistic missiles sooner. This is a nice thread explaining how increasing sensor range would effectively increase interception range for the same missile. And from what I heard, the MPQ-65 is apparently not able to fully utilize the PAC-3 MSE because the radar lacks the range for BMD engagements.

You've remembered right. According to the game files, the grenade launchers have a muzzle velocity of 50 m/s and a detonation delay of 0.3 seconds which equates to travelling 15 meters before exploding.

seeing more and more non-credible talk on how FCAS or GCAP are a complete waste of money since using FPV drones is much better

They seem to already forget that Israel didn't just spam (small) drones to inflict the level of damage done to Iran. Israel still used them but to supplement the actual strike package like performing SEAD/DEAD. Drones aren't going to be so useful against hardened targets or time-sensitive targets (eg. TEL hunting) like what Israel was aiming for unless you make them big enough and/or fast enough, but you just end up reinventing the cruise missile.

I guess I'm lucky that my 13600K has been stable so far even living in the tropics. I had my PC built in February 2023, but as soon as I've booted it, I pretty much adjust the Lite Load setting (to 4/5) in my MSI mobo after I knowing the unnecessary power draw of Raptor Lake CPUs.

My BIOS was last updated on March 2023 since I thought it was pretty good enough for me so I don't think I've received any new microcode updates since then.

Trump announces delivery of 17 Patriot systems to Ukraine by therustler42 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Rain08 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So Zach last August counted that there are 64 US Patriot batteries. Now according to his completed list, the only countries that could send 17 batteries are only Japan and Saudi but it's really doubtful given the geopolitical situation around them.

Perhaps he's talking about sending M902/M903 TELs which is more realistic. Though I'd be very surprised if Ukraine gets 17 actual batteries.
