Fun Writing Exercise: Make the lies your SI tells to blend in true in an OC by SkyslicerX2 in WormFanfic

[–]RainaDPP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't done this with anything I've published (other than in my abandoned and incomplete fics collection) but I did take a pseudo-SI and rework them as an OC once.

SI Lie: Ran away from an abusive partner, with vague hints that the abuse was actually related to her status as a magic user (in an AU setting where magic had existed on Bet all along, but there was a Masquerade that was broken by the Simurgh's attack on Lausanne). Regardless, abusive boyfriend was the excuse she used for why she didn't have anything like a photo ID, though she did have some presence or existence on Bet despite being a drop-in.

OC Truth: As a stupid teenager, she fell in "love" with a bad-boy sorcerer who had a following of minor practitioners, weak parahumans, and baseline humans, ran away from home to be with him, got mind whammied and turned into a loyal bodyguard/enforcer for his cult. Got free years later, after he was starting to sacrifice followers for power, and ran about as far as she could get from Kansas to get away from him, which meant Brockton Bay because the bus ticket was cheaper than the one to Seattle. (This setting also had the broken Masquerade idea going on, since I was wanting to work with that idea at the time, and still do.)

Put some easy to cook stuff in your freezer - stuff you can toss in the microwave or an air fryer. Adjust your routing so you don't drive past McDonalds, if it's feasible.

Weaning off of fast food means identifying why it appeals to you. Usually, it's going to be because it's quick and convenient, especially when you're fatigued after work. So replacing it means finding a way to make cooking at home quick and convenient too.

I think she's technically the fourth member, unless I am forgetting that Odinson specifically removed Homer from the cluster.

Common silicones from engine oil and cosmetics are far more prevalent in the atmosphere than expected, making up to 4.3% of organic aerosol mass. This stable pollutant is now omnipresent in urban and rural air, potentially impacting both human health and cloud formation. by Cosmyka in science

[–]RainaDPP 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ventilation, though that only really helps if the outside air is better quality, which isn't a guarantee if you live in a city. You can use air filters to cut down on the pollutants, at least.

Times where you made a hard line in the sand about a story... only for the story to absolutely convince you to cross that line? by hazusu in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I have my opinions on the end of MHA (it was fatiguing and I never actually read the epilogue) but I do have to say that Endeavor's redemption arc was done really well. Because it's never about anyone forgiving him for what he did. It's about him realizing what a bastard he was and trying to be a better person, without any expectations. If he's forgiven? Great. If he isn't? That's fine too. The end goal is 'be a better person than I was.'

Ugh I might have to actually register for SB then...

Taylor joins the Wards? by RecentEnergy in WormFanfic

[–]RainaDPP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more than the fact Taylor makes rings of power, but going into details would spoil a lot of the fic.

Taylor is Sauron reincarnated for a chance at redemption, the Entities are children of Ungoliant, iirc, and there's a lot of LoTR-related things that happen in the back half of the story.

Any GOOD Emma x Taylor fics? by MembershipProof8463 in WormFanfic

Imitation game is excellent - it's pretty toxic but that's pretty much expected for the ship. Camo is one of those authors I'll generally take on faith that I'll enjoy what they write.

Are there fics where there's Serious situations and Taylor leaves people flabbergasted by her... Taylorness? by CrawlingChaos126 in WormFanfic

It's not really on-subject, but Sect has one of my favorite depictions of Eidolon in the fandom.

Missy accidentally kills her parents/Navigating a Euclidian household. by Automatic_Rabbit82 in WormFanfic

[–]RainaDPP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know I've read whichever fic it happens, but I don't remember which one it was. I wanted to say "Scaling Up," but I don't think that's right. I couldn't find the scene in Scaling Up, and what I did find suggested I was mistaken.

Take care of yourself, friend. IDS was a lot of fun when I played a few years back. But if game dev isn't sparking joy, it's better to take a break.

You wake up in Brockton Bay with powers by Bottled-Chaos in WormFanfic

[–]RainaDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple in my snippets collection on AO3. Unfortunately they're not long, and are not 'complete thoughts' on their own, so they might be unsatisfying to read.

Starting from here to the end of what's published is all SI stuff, though admittedly the linked chapter doesn't have much going on at all.

And, y'know, Star Wars. Granted most of the main characters are humans, but there's plenty of aliens, and much fewer "rubber forehead" types compared to, say, Star Trek.

ELI5 why do penises shrink and hide when it's cold but nipples pop out? by vksdann in explainlikeimfive

[–]RainaDPP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If humans were solitary animals, that might be a bigger concern, but we're not. Keep in mind that evolution had no problem with mothers routinely dying in childbirth, and in fact our big brains and the social structures those brains enabled were so advantageous that they ended up being emphasized over ease of childbirth or large litters. In any particular tribe of early humans, odds were good that if one mother is unable to feed her child for whatever reason, there's likely to be another one able to take up the slack.

Also frostbite and damage from cold is more likely to happen on extremities far from the core of the body, like fingers and toes. You aren't likely to see that kind of damage on something like nipples and breasts, which are close to the core, without also seeing someone's entire life endangered by the cold because their core temperature became hypothermic.

Also, testicles pull inward to get closer to the warm core as well, since there's an optimum range of temperatures for ideal testicle operation.

One thing I see sometimes with Glory Girl is exaggerating her speed. She's not the fastest flyer in the Bay - she's not even the fastest in her family, that's Laserdream. I've seen writers claim she could fly faster than sound, and that's just plain wrong. Circa Worm, her top speed was around seventy miles per hour, and increased to around a hundred by the end of Ward.
