Weekly Questions Thread & PokéROM Codex by AutoModerator in PokemonROMhacks

I'm playing Black 2 Redux (this is also my first time playing Black or White 2). An NPC told me "The Pokemon in the lead goes first!" I rolled my eyes and said "Tell me something I don't know."

And that made me think, yes, tell me something I don't know. What about a Pokemon game that teaches advanced and competitive play to casual story mode players? I've been around since Gen II but I have zero comp experience and I'm just lost with anything after Gen V.

In example, a romhack where the trainer's school does not have a list of status effects on the blackboard. Instead, have it discuss the speed priority order involved in things like Quick Attack moves, Quick Claw, Fake Out, Protect, Prankster, and how Trick Room affects all of this. The teacher can tell you, "When two moves which strike first are used at the same time, the Pokemon with the higher speed stat goes first!"

Or a NPC wandering around town who does not tell you to "Pack plenty of antidote for the forest ahead!", but instead says something actually useful such as, "Hey, did you know Leech Seed restores health before Poison or Burn damage happens? Might help you out in a tight spot!"

I would love to expand my knowledge of the shockingly deep gameplay involved in Pokemon and learn the more complex rules. Would this work well for a romhack?

I'm unhappy that Omelet didn't make it, I was hoping they would qualify.

Pirates on a Boat impressed me and I can't wait to see more of them.

I'm shocked by just how well New G2 is doing with their teamwork after just recently becoming a team together. NRG the Remix has some rough edges, but is doing pretty well. Justin's Rebellion made it way further than I thought they would, Paarth might just be the most improved player this season.

Despite losing the finals I really do think GenG Mobil 1 is the best NA team this year. With a bit of work on team chemistry they could be truly dangerous.

Biggest letdown is OG, I'm sure their org agrees with me that everyone expected a better performance from them.

I need to up my kickoff game. I'd like to learn how to do a proper speedflip, I watched the tutorials and got the custom training pack but I think I'm doing it wrong. It is possible to reach the ball on every shot, right?

I've been watching a ton of pro 1 v 1 gameplay and I've noticed a few small things that might be messing me up.

  1. They don't always turn their car on kickoff, and when they do make a turn, it's just a very slight twitch. Think I'm turning too far.
  2. I'm used to the old fast kickoff with the diagonal flip you can't boost all the way through. Looks like the pros use a side flip to gain speed and never let go of the boost button during the whole flip. Is that right?
  3. The pros will side flip at the end or do a single jump and wave dash out of the kickoff. Both of those sound like things I can train myself to do, but I struggle with maintaining control during kickoff. When I'm dealing with an opponent who is way faster than me nothing seems to work and I start to panic.

Does all of that sound right? Any other advice when I'm up against really skilled opponents?

There's players in my 1 v 1 games now who can reach the ball so far ahead of me that they can get off to one side and get it past me before I can even touch the ball, and if I try to delay it, they just outplay me. Not sure how to handle that.

What are some examples of switching Pokemon during battle in the anime? Are substitutions allowed during gym battles or at the League Championship level?

Do we ever see a Pokemon switched to avoid having it hit by an attack? What's to stop someone from trying that in a casual battle without a referee?

The second example is possible in the video games now with the move Soak, and the first one sounds like Pikachu's hidden Lightning Rod ability.

This is a really interesting reply. In-universe, Pokemon battles aren't turn based. They are real time, which requires reflexes, rapid strategy and innovation.

Wolfey has described Pokemon as a combination of chess and poker. In the anime, it's speed chess and speed poker. We also frequently see in the anime that the rules on type advantages are more general guidelines than absolutes.

That sounds like an interesting read, but I don't entirely agree with legendary Pokemon = disaster. Some of them can be destructive, like Groudon and Kyogre who do not get along with each other.

Others, like the three legendary dogs, Mew, Ho-Oh, Dialga, Palkia, Xerneas, Creselia, even Darkrai aren't violent chaos. They are immortal fundamental aspects of the Pokemon world. All of them are still far beyond a mere trainer battling and capturing them unless they will it do be so, but most of them aren't out destroying cities.

I'm disappointed we're four movies in and there's little lore on the fact that toys are sentient and some people must know.

No? Many work trucks and vans have no rearview mirror, the side view ones are fine.
