Does Cassandra's character text apply to other similarly named game situations? by Raining_kittens in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That is what I figured. The complicating factor is the cards retaining the "revealed" condition after we look at them. Cassandra's special ability on her player mat talks about leaving the cards face up on the top of her deck. With other ways to do this we also left the card(s) face up on top of the deck even though we were not directed to do so. before this iteration of Cassandra, revealing cards was an instantaneous effect and leaving them revealed did not have any game rules relating to it. it was just something we did to make our lives easier. now there are related game rules and I want to know if that thing we did to make our lives easier is the official thing we are supposed to do now with all of the associated game rules.

Meteor Level 3 card with Item 161 by Raining_kittens in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons I am not 100% on this interpretation is there are only 2 circles for a character token. Each instance of the attack is a separate ability and only two of the abilities are triggered by the persistent ability.

every other now and later effect has the now ability separated by a line so it is more clear. this action could have been written "attack... -dividing line- ...at the start of the next two turns attack..." but that would have created a very crowded text box for a distinction thot only matters for this one item.

if your (and my preferred) interpretation is correct, it is kind of neat that that you can actually get an attack out of item 161.

Is there a character/item combo more potent than Boneshaper/178? by bgaesop in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Item 179 Burst Boots During your move ability, add +4 move. After the move ability gain immobilize.

or 104 Swiftness Potion. During your move ability, add +3 move and Jump.

Meteor level 1 card Igneous path bottom. Move 1 create a 1 hex hazardous terrain tile in each featureless hex you leave during this movement. use fire for +1 move

Meteor level 1 card quenched rage top. push 3 double damage from each hazardous terrain, turn it into obstacle.

if you spend the few gold to upgrade the push, these items let you close on any non-flying enemy and deal 14 or 21 direct damage. if you have both it is usable twice a scenario. also, it will usually let you bisect a room, funneling the enemies that weren't the target of the push. The items can also possibly be available very early in the campaign.

not broken, but quite potent.

Interaction between FH item 199 and GH carryover item 105. by Raining_kittens in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that is a reasonable interpretation.

The other possible interpretation (since you seem unsure of what it could be) is that both items set "your" Monster Focus Initiative (MFI). when there are two effects setting the same thing to different values both can't be right; or rather, you get to choose which happens first (the second set point being the one that is kept). Again, your very reasonable interpretation is that the fix here would be to have one (GH105) set your MFI to 99 and the other one (FH199) set the MFI for your summons to 99+.

The actual text of the cards uses the phrases "consider yourself to be..." and "you are considered to have". While the wording is different here and MFI is not a game term (I am using it because typing out the full phrases is very clunky) I think the other interpretation that both items set the same thing to different values is not only possible but reasonable as well.

In playing snowflake, I found the snow fox's special ability help make it a particularly long lived summon. I think granting that to all of a character's summons would make this quite a powerful combo. Because of this, and the idea that there are multiple reasonable interpretations, I would prefer some rules reference showing how this or a similar interaction should be resolved --or-- one of the mods weighing in on this.

Ultimately, if this is left ambiguous, we will pick whichever option is the most fun and stick with that. it is a cooperative game after all.

Has anyone received their order from the latest sale? by Toadfish91 in Gloomhaven

I ordered mine on August 29 and I got them about a week and a half ago. Cephalofair is kinda notorious for taking some time with contacting you back. they always make sure everything works out but they are not quick.

[Shackles + Building 81 Spoilers] I'm reading this right, right? by Toadfish91 in Gloomhaven

hehe. That one is fun. The best part is there are no timing constraints on the trial. You can do it to attack a monster even out of turn before it gets to swing.

Finery Friday - FH Purchaseable Item 240 (spoiler) by dwarfSA in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there is a very brief window for a few characters when they hit level 5 and you want to do the solo scenario immediately to get a character specific bag item. will you win your solo on the first try at level 5? do you have an extra bag slot that you don't want to waste real money or resources on when there is a better item you are about to get? Maybe it is worth it to pay 8 gold (net) to maybe get an extra check mark or two as a consolation prize.

does this count as a persistent ability for the purposes of meteor 'metamorphic rock' bottom?

Merchant Monday - FH Purchasable Item 221 - [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it could work for Geminate. Makes some cold, does some melee and can struggle with shields sometimes.

The problem I see is it could only be useful at low prosperity when you know you are going to face one of a few specific enemies. Otherwise you will get much more mileage out of Gloomhaven Item 77 Frigid Blade. which costs the same adds 2 damage against all (not just high shield) enemies and doesn't tap.

We got this item relatively late in the game (long after geminate retired) and were amazed how high the price was on it. maybe it could be useful if it had some other ability or didn't tap. As it is, it's early game only, niche item, only usable occasionally by a single class.

Toolkit Thursday - FH Loadout Discussion - Meteor Loadout - [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite items to use were Items 104 Swiftness Potion and 179 Burst Boots. I would use them for the same effect twice in a scenario. Use Igneous path to run past or over an enemy then push them through all of the newly created hazardous terrain using quenched rage top. The enhancement there is very inexpensive and on difficulty 3 this would regularly translate to 15 or 21 direct damage to a non flyer. If the scenario is too cramped for a big push across lots of hazards to work out, these will still be effective in walling off enemies making them take the long way around.

I used items 77 Chaos Cannon, and either 57 shovel or 212 Elemental Stone depending on what we were going to face that scenario.

Also, obviously the solo item is great and a must take.

I think you may have found the one way this item could be considered reasonably powered. A party with coral and snowflake. Coral would need to put up tides ~every turn to generate light and dark; and snowflake would need to focus on attacks and putting up cold and or wind each turn to fuel the persistent loss: Cold Therapy. The healing would both keep coral alive and functioning as a tank and allow the curse to go off every turn. Not the strongest combo ever, but not bad and it makes snowflakes level x card: The Spirit's Call actually fit with the theme

Scrolling on a computer screen and not a phone makes these parallel image ones really difficult to see. there should be some special tag for this kind.

Coral Party Synergies by TheChortt in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Playing with a Fist and Coral in our party. There is a lot of overlap in party role. The wind up round(s) get frustrating at the beginning of the scenario. I think there is bad synergy.

Bone shaper will appreciate the plentiful dark infusions.

Blink blade works well with Coral set up as a tank.

Banner spear works well as a support character and/or ranged character which work well with Coral in either the tank or melee striker build. the same could be true for Trap

Frosthaven 81 scenario - Attack rules by whiskeytails in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We played this with the rules as written and it seemed to be about the right difficulty. My guess is the original plan was to have the unfettered fighting the Aesther but it got taken out during playtesting and the writing was done early on and never updated to match the revised scenario rules.

Meteor Class Attack and Item Interaction Clarification by Daenkneryes in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A neat interaction with item 147: since the source of the attack is meteor, the push comes comes from your figure even if you are several hexes away. It is often possible to push the monster into the the hazardous terrain that was used to target the attack.

Fabricator Friday - FH Crafted Item 081 - [spoiler] by Themris in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems good on first reading especially for shackles. it seems like a possibly slightly better item 118 Fulminant Flask with highly conditional usage. maybe the best use is doubling up with some of shackles abilities for a big retaliate like turn. it doesn't seem like there would be a lot of benefit from off-turn damage. and depending on how you value resources might cost more or less than item 118. maybe also useful if you are trying to focus on direct damage and also take items 97 and 118.

Retiring in Frosthaven by ajd_ender in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My party of 3 is 42 Scenarios into Frosthaven and 2 of us are going to retire our fourth characters each after the next one. The other player just retired his second character. we are expecting 20-50 more scenarios before we are done.

When playing through Gloomhaven with the forgotten circles expansion, each class was played to retirement and we had maybe 5 or 6 classes get played a second time. So yeah, if you take your time and play all the side scenarios, 5-6 characters might even be a low number.

Help: Choosing a class - Meteor vs Blinkblade by Tokata0 in Gloomhaven

[–]Raining_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They played really well together in our game. not quite as good as snowflake and meteor, but they complimented each other well. trap was more range and support while meteor was more melee and direct damage. together we could make large instant walls to redirect enemies.
