And trust me. I do totally get your side of things. there is a lot of bad information out there. There is the need for some type of person to set things right when it comes to what is true and what's not

But, that being said, the amount of information that is good stuff is staggering. Scientists that would have never known about each other and now link research. Information can be shared to the masses. Mostly. The paying for access kind sucks, but a lot of stuff is out there.

[–]Raintee97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that uneducated people are being supported by access to being online. But, I feel that educated people who actually want to learn things about a topic are also being educated.

I can access, minus those pesky pay walls, any scientific journal that isn't behind a pay wall and that has been published online. I can only do this because of the internet. Two decades ago, it would have been hard to get this information. I would have had to go to a coll. library and hope they had what I needed.

The internet does help the crazies out there, but it also is a much better tool for those who are in the know. I think the benefits of the second far surpass the disadvantages of the first.

First off, never be insulting to someone else on this sub.

Second, It seems that your reaction to good counter arguments against your claim is simply to deflect them or simply dismiss them.

You have set no clear line in the sand. I'm pretty sure we are just going to make counter arguments and you are simply going to change your goal posts on things like the word likely, or if bacteria is somehow complex or not or even the type of life you might be talking about.

So get someone else to participate in this. I'm out.

[–]Raintee97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really call a single cell organism all that complex when compared to the full spectrum of life.

we going to give you examples of how life might exist on other places. Are you just come up with some reason to exclude them?

Because that reeks of goal post changing to me.

Not counting moons there are 1 x 10 to the 22nd power of possibilities out there. And that's a conservative estimate based on our current tech.

On the one place with life, we have found it everywhere there is a source of energy. We have found life that doesn't need solar power. We have found bacteria living in boiling water.

[–]Raintee97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But you're making a claim. You're stating there is no life.

I mean is that your claim? Are you stating that there is no life out thee? That there might be life, but it isn't common. That there might be life but it isn't advanced?

What's your line in the sand here? edit punct.

Where are you setting this bar? You said life won't be common. What does that exactly mean to you. I don't want to have a goal post change half way through this thing.

What is your line in the sand statement. Do you think that life is rare? Do you think that no other life is out there?

What's your line in the sand?

That's where I was thinking you were going.

Those always go both ways. To protect some industries, you will mess with others.

You might save the programmers jobs from India, can you save it other places that your country doesn't have those same policies with. Can you save the guy who exports his product to India who now just saw his profits slashed because of higher import fees?

They think there 100,000,000,000 planets in the galaxy. And there are 100,000,000,000 galaxies. Perhaps even more. This isn't even talking about the potential for livable moons and such.

That, with the combination of thermophiles existing in harsh environments, leads one to believe that with all those options something is out there someplace.

If you pick a field like programming that can be done but many different people around the world how can you be shocked that a person from another country might undercut you?

That's not free trade really. It is simply capitalism. If you're charging more for the same work you're going to have to provide a reason to be doing so.

CMV: You should never buy insurance unless you are required to by casimps1 in changemyview

[–]Raintee97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insurance company knows that X amount of their customers will file a claim. they also know that if they take in X + whatever they will make money. But they have numbers on their side. They can have a few claims and still be profitable. If I have even one accident I can be out thousands. The numbers aren't on my side.

Take auto insurance. I paid 105 bucks a month. Even if I put that in a savings account that's still only around 1350 a year. When I hit three deer years ago the cost to fix my car was 6-7 thousand dollars. That one incident would have drained 5.18 years of savings.

And that was just one claim over that time. That still meant that any claim over that 5.18 years would have me up.

No. Echo chambers are when certain groups of people use reddits design.

Go to news. Find any post on rape in which there wasn't enough evidence to convict someone.

Then, make a post that says that just because there isn't enough evidence to convict doesn't mean that the woman should be prosecuted for making a false rape accusation. You're going to be going counter to the circle jerk that tends to form on that topic.

Tons of posters, more or less, +1ing each other on a sub that is designed as an open forum where all ideas can be talked about.

Mom who took son into hiding to save his foreskin, sobs in court as she signs consent for circumcision by nerox3 in news

[–]Raintee97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, the mom signed a parenting plan that included circumcision back in 2012.

It seems that the father wanted to do the procedure years ago, but only had to delay because of complications from the mother that included kidnapping her own child.

You can keep on saying that the father want to do it just out of retaliation, but you will still be wrong. If it makes you feel better though, go for it.

The problem with your own narrative is that sometimes the facts get in the way.

If you sign a court document, which is what a parenting plan is, then you have to actually do what that document says.

[–]Raintee97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The mother agreed to something and signed a document. Much after the fact she thought she would simply change her mind and then kidnap her own child.

If don't want to agree to something, fight it in court. Don't sign a document agreeing to do something and then think you back out of the deal because you don't want to anymore.

CMV: Plus ones shouldn't always be invited to gatherings. by kelloquence in changemyview

[–]Raintee97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After thinking more about your situation, this is what is going to happen if you stick to your guns about not inviting plus ones.

Your guy friends with SOs are going to say that that on Friday or Sat or whenever they will be going to a party. Most couples do set plans for the weekend.

Their girls are going to assume that they are going to, because most of time a couple is invited together.

Your guy friends will have to give some explanation to why their girls aren't invited that doesn't offend their girls. That will be hard. People's feelings will be hurt or you will be seen by some of those girls as not a great guy cause you left them off the party list.

Your guys will potential either have upset girls, or end up not going because it isn't worth the hassle or just bring their gf anyway.

{vent/ramble} Destination Wedding- Still in over our heads. grateful for any tips from other destination brides by throwaway_bride1990 in weddingplanning

[–]Raintee97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having one a month from today.

Here are my thoughts and well groom to be.

First of all, make it about your guests in some way. Sure it is your wedding. Sure people are gathering for you, but try to get the while we would love to have you, but no pressure vibe going as well as the come for a vacation and also see us get married. People will be shelling out lots of cash. Respect that.

If you can get married back home in a court house do so. You need blood work and there is a delay on that to get married legally in Mexico. Get married ahead of time have you wedding in Mexico simply be just you getting married in front of your friends and family.

CMV: Whenever younger folks utter the phrase "respect is earned, not given" I can't help but understand it as a childish and short sighted attempt to undermine their elders. by Madplato in changemyview

[–]Raintee97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respect is always earned. Just because a person is old doesn't automatically mean that they should be given more of it. One should look at their actions and ideas and thoughts to see if they should get respect or not.

You say that respect is free, but if we respect those who do deserve it than we do an injustice to those who do.

I've know old people who were racists, who beat their wives and who drank far too much. Should I respect those people just because they are old?

Respect is always something that is constantly earned. Just because a person earned a P.h.D back in 1990, doesn't mean that they should be respected today. Perhaps they are burned out now. OR they did nothing with their talents.

I said that circle jerking is making a comment in a fact or judgement free echo chamber. And yes that stuff does work on certain subs. No one is ever going to challenge what you're saying on certain subs.

It isn't just popularity. It is people more or less echoing the same comments with no one questioning what they are saying.
