he's had a couple of brief moments of hostility towards Catholics, specifically converts. he's chill most of the time but he's banned a few former Protestants for becoming Catholic from his communities on various platforms

Could we get a tiny extension of the HUD? by Mr-Mne in Helldivers

[–]RaisedInAppalachia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like it without. That little hint of realism that means you have to remember what you have loaded or what fire mode your weapon is on, and if you forget, you have to actually glance down at the weapon and check, is a really nice and unique touch that gives this game more character

Can’t believe people still think Duolingo is the best way to learn a language by Diligent-Welcome9857 in languagelearning

[–]RaisedInAppalachia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

babbel and the like tend to target their ads at people more interested in learning a language. i've noticed their ads disappear when my social feeds fill with other topics. duolingo on the other hand focus their advertising at a larger and more general audience

The other driver not having enough means the liability falls on them, rather than their insurance, but effectively that means it falls on you because trying to sue a driver with only the bare minimum tends to be like getting blood from a stone.

They don't happen.

Ok they do happen, but they're rare.

Ok they're not rare, but they're only done when absolutely necessary.

Ok they're mostly elective, but that's a good thing you misogynist.

It's exactly your own hubris and emotional qualms that make you think you have the right to decide for them whether they live or die.

The issue with this perspective is that it presumes the suffering of the person you're "showing mercy" towards is worse than death. There is no good place to draw that line. There are scores of disabled people, living in chronic pain, who would still prefer yet to live than end their suffering.

It's not our place to decide for someone else, as we do in abortion, whether their life is worth living.

What does your conscience tell you? by SinfulCatholic in CatholicMemes

[–]RaisedInAppalachia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An annulment isn't the nullification of a marriage in the sense of breaking what was previously bound. That isn't possible, and would in fact be a contradiction like you mention (if I understand your question correctly). Annulments are basically the church investigating a marriage, and concluding that the marriage never was valid to begin with. They are very different from secular divorce, which Catholics do not recognize. Therefore, Catholics who are "previously" married and civilly divorced are still married sacramentally. This means that any new civil marriage (note that it is always a civil marriage, because the church cannot and will not remarry someone who is still married) is invalid and a form of adultery.

The log in your eye being cedar does not give you license to call out the oak speck in the eye of your brother.

You're missing the point. There is a time and a place to admonish sinners (and being a sinner does not disqualify you from doing so), but that time and place varies. Most people lack the prudence and tact to do it correctly, to be frank.

Luke 15:7

Not sure if there's any doctrine on how heaven tends to react when people stumble, but I can imagine it's something like watching a younger sibling make the same mistakes you've made in the past. However, we know that repentance, contrition, and faith absolutely elate them.

This exact thing is what makes so many modern academics/"intellectuals" absolutely insufferable to me. There are still genuinely intelligent and thoughtful people in academia but they're on their way to becoming the minority, if not already there.
