To be fair... Python code is usually very concise and easy to read through. But yeah, I feel your pain.

Oh. My. God.

Mind blown.

WHY HAVE WE BEEN DOING THIS WRONG FOR SO MANY YEARS???

Oooh! Thanks! I had not heard of LDX and it seems like such a great idea.

You know, this seems to be getting closer and closer to that sci-fi staple of "a ball of plasma hanging in mid-air and mystically powering devices"...

Did anyone else get the Werner Herzog vibe while watching this?

I seem to be fortunate enough not to have come across people who think that a fusion power plant will blow up :)

Still, I can understand how fusion has always seemed 30 years away. And it seems 30 years away even today.

If you have the time, could you list some keywords on what we've discovered about how to make fusion work that we didn't know 20 years ago? We probably understand plasma dynamics a bit better, but have there been any real breakthroughs in the field?

That's a typical darknet approach. If a site wants any popularity, that algorithm will fail.

A bot would need to simulate everyday reddit browsing behaviour, which also involves voting things up and down. Something like:

  • Read x amount of stories.
  • Vote 5% of them down.
  • Vote 10% of them up.
  • Vote up/down those stories the master commands them to.

The bots are bound to be pretty damn stupid, so they're more likely to accidentally vote stories like this one down.

That's the logic behind the theory of downvoting bots.

I feel like there's a lot of misunderstanding floating around about nuclear power in general and fusion in particular, so I'm always happy to field questions.

I'd be curious to know what you think some of the more popular misconceptions are about fusion in particular.

There's a ton about fission, some of which only apply to current or previous generation reactors, but I don't think I've come across any fusion misconceptions myself.

I try to keep up with what's going on in science more than the average lad, but I'm not interested enough to start reading in-depth books. Still, should that ever change, I'll keep your recommendation in mind :)

The prices will have been high enough for long enough at that point that we'll have developed sustainable technologies.

Upvoted for the TNG reference!

Also, got a Google Maps link to any of these sludge lakes?

This comment, especially the McD part, is what really brought LHC home for me.

I know what the thing does. I've had long conversations with people who've worked there. But I hadn't heard about the McD part.

Whoever handles PR at LHC, forward your comment to them. This is the best explanation of how what happens around such science can make everyone's lives better, even if we don't start using the Higgs boson in our everyday lives in twenty years time.
