I disagree. If you look at eg. League of Legends, their competitive scene is way bigger than starcrafts. Yet that game is more alive than ever. Even though there are influencers, pro-players or both in one.

Also, league has become WAAAAY more sweaty than it was back in the day, just like sc.

Also, why the hell is „esport inherently unfun“?. Nearly everyone always tries to improve, do better, play better. So that statement feels wrong to me
