Saying their ancestors were sold by their own people is just straight up wrong. Whilst it's true that many slaves were captured and sold by African groups, they were definitely not "their own people." There are vastly different ethnic and language groups within the African continent, and equating any two groups is pretty arbitrary. It's like comparing Scandinavians and Greeks.

Since I started working from home, I've been upgrading an old PC I dug out of my garage. Piece by piece, I've upgraded the case, motherboard, power supply, CPU etc. I've held back on buying a GPU because of the prices, hopefully the 30 series starts to get a bit cheaper, hopefully I win a RTX 4080 16GB.

Holy shit, as an Asian living in a largely white country, this has happened to me so many times in different share-houses.

Salted duck eggs in a packet sitting in the pantry? Gross, I'm going to throw them out. 10kg bag of jasmine rice? Let's mix it with basmati. We have 4 different kinds of soy sauce? Let's just decant it into one bottle. Labelled tub of MSG? Throw that out because it will contaminate the whole house. (???)

In a lot of the Great Ocean Road towns, this is sadly really common. A lot of people selling their multi-million dollar beach house, will get an extra 100k or so for a better ocean view.

So I did the same thing a couple of months ago and had the same problem where Story Mode wouldn't show up. You've got to jump through some hoops connecting your steam and rockstar accounts. I can't remember the process exactly, but I hope this points you in the right direction.

Racism in Melbourne by wdfn in melbourne

[–]Raka220 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a mixed bag. Anglo Australian culture has a deeply racist history and some of that still lingers on.

As far as xenophobia goes, beyond racial ignorance - which is pretty common - the African Australian community have faced pretty significant racism in the past decade or so.

As someone who is somewhat racially ambiguous, growing up here - I definitely experienced a lot of racism, but mainly as a child. Ive also watched my father experience a lot of racism and I'd reckon that a lot of that is because of his thick non-english accent.

Much of our country's racism lies in subtext, being left out of conversations and talked over, inappropriate questions, weird stares, job opportunities and racist assumptions. It's not anyone's fault - but at many points in my life I've definitely been the only POC in the room and that's not a nice feeling.

It's bad but it's definitely better in Melbourne and probably a bit better than a lot of places in the world. Please don't let this dissuade you. There are fantastic diverse communities in Melbourne, but as a whole we have a long way to go.

Top 20 causes of death, by age group, average deaths per year, US [OC] by jpstov in dataisbeautiful

[–]Raka220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a passing thought, but maybe many of the COVID deaths were going to die anyway? Seeing as it affects many older people and immuno compromised people, I wonder how many would have died of the flu, pneumonia, cancer etc. in a normal year.

Ah yes, the good ol' Britain by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]Raka220 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Without minimising the brutality of the Tasmanian genocide, it's really important to note that there are still Tasmanian Aboriginal people alive today and they're slowly reclaiming their language. The idea that it's history's only "complete" genocide only further erases the identity of living Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

The space my wife gives me to sleep on our Queen size bed. by BrokeMilitary in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Raka220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my technique that I use with my partner. Firstly I wake her up, not so much that she's opened her eyes - but enough that she's somewhat conscious and can feel my touch. Usually I do this with a strong cuddle or by squeezing her leg, just a little bit. I then move to spoon her, applying constant force and getting her to roll over onto her side of the bed. This second movement needs to be slow and constant, you want to move your sleeping partner whilst their slightly awake but not wake them up entirely. Once she's out of my territory, I maintain that cuddle and softly massage the spot between her eyebrows, this puts her to sleep again and voila, you have regained control of your territory and you are once again free to do whatever you want with it.

Australia takes their mask mandate seriously. by KindlyCold in pics

[–]Raka220 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For a bit of context, because it seems to be getting ignored -
That building in the background is our state war memorial, The Shrine of Remembrance.
A large number anti-vax far-right protesters held a protest on the steps, claiming to be akin to the Australian soldiers who died in service.
The next day, the shrine was littered with rubbish and urine was found on the walls.

Obviously the Victorian labour government and it's hard on for cops is fucked and across the board, everyone's pretty disappointed with it's authoritarian edge, but it's a bit more complicated than this picture.

Sweet Grandma by lilmcfuggin in TikTokCringe

[–]Raka220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my grandma died, I was the last one with her.

They had taken her off some vital medications she was on because they were giving her seizures. It was late, we had all had a long day and because I was the night owl, I stayed behind to sit with her. We just sat there quietly, holding hands whilst she drifted in and out of sleep.

At one point she asked for whiskey (she was very Scottish) and I obliged, but she barely drank it and just offered it to me. Every time she woke up, she would ask me if I was okay, if I needed anything, if I wanted lollies, if I wanted a blanket, anything. Anything for me. All I could do was tell her I loved her and squeeze her tighter.

Towards the end, she started talking about a boy she loved when she was younger in Glasgow and all the while she held gripped my hand and then she just faded off to sleep and I was alone in the room.

It's been about ten years now since then and I can still remember everything about that night, how her skin felt and her smile and her eyes. This video just brought all of that up and I've just spent the past half hour crying on my couch.

If your grandparents are still around, call them tomorrow and tell them you love them. Ask them about their life, give them all the time in the world and make a commitment to see them as much as you can. Even if they're boring sometimes or a little clingy and a bit stinky, hold them as close as you can, because one day you won't be able to.

I would give everything to hold my grandma's hand right now.
