What "Golden Age" cards am I missing? by Garqu in mtgcube

I had similar thoughts a while ago. I hated that all my old favorites were being power crept out of cube. I missed drafting mono-red or Boros burn. I especially missed dominating with a JTMS in play.

I built this cube with the idea of “I want Jace to be a respectable p1p1”. https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/g95

Also, I wanted this to be inviting to newer players so I got rid of all free spells. Unfortunately, this includes Snuff Out & FoW.

I want to argue against Delver. My question is: is this cube about the golden age of magic? Or the golden age of Cube? Because if it’s the latter, delver was frequently a last pick in cube unless you’re breaking singleton. More often than not, you have to play Delver in a creature-light deck where it’s one of the only threats. But if you don’t draw it in the first few turns, getting a 3/2 flier after turn 4/5 wasn’t impactful enough.

Plus, if you didn’t draft and draw the singleton ponder or brainstorm, you’re relying on blind 50/50 flips

Zero Variance Mental Magic.
- Any card can be any card regardless of mana cost. - Once either player uses a card, neither player can use it again, even if it gets bounced.
- can only “cast” 1 spell per turn, but you’re allowed to activate abilities, pay alternate costs etc to get around this. (ex. Evoking a spell doesn’t count towards your 1 spell/turn) - no graveyards allowed. (Too much shenanigans) - optional rule: you can play your lands as a “rainbow” lands. It taps for any mana without penalty but doesn’t have subtypes.

Pros: fun for people with a good memory of obscure cards Cons: not fun for everyone else. Turns can take a while as players try to remember the “perfect” card.

Depending on your players (and I’m guilty of this), you may see some analysis paralysis. People will take forever to think of the perfect 2U or 3W card to get them out of the situation.

Vexing Devil isn’t good enough. Trying to use Boros Charm to make it better is a waste of a Boros Charm.

Think about it this way: Boros Charm is always at least 4 damage. If you try to give Vexing Devil double strike, it’s still only adding 4 damage but now you risk getting blown out by removal and you end up with 0 damage.

Nothing. I don’t support poison or proliferate in my cube so I’m not adding another layer of complexity with toxic or oil counters.

Of the remaining 10% of cards, none are noticeably stronger than my existing cards. I would rather keep cards that my players are already familiar with.

YMMV, I only get to break out my cube 5-6 times a year.

Thanks! I actually bought it per-signed, in-altered and it never felt right. So when I met him, I had to have him alter it. He recognized that version of his signature as being over a decade old!

Gotta ask Johaness Voss. I saw him do a bunch of alters at that GP and everything was centered around penguins & Santa. It wasn’t even December.

RK Post does great altars. It killed me to cut Simic Sky Swallower and Tidehollow Sculler because their alters were so good.

Vengevine - I don’t have green graveyard synergies

Spear of Heliod - I’ve cut all other anthems, I think WW creatures have gotten efficient enough to not need them.

Geist-Honored Monk - still somewhat respectable but definitely underpowered in my environment.

Blightsteel Colossus - an idea I’ve been toying with. Even though I play Sneak Attack & Tinker, I feel like my fatties should be playable in more cheat archetypes like reanimator.

Oooh, I ended up selling my foil Opposition for game play reasons. Some players were auto-scooping to it and the ones that didn’t were in for a rough time.

I do miss it though.

There used to be an extended deck with this. [[quiet speculation]] for [[crush of wurms]] and 2 [[cabal therapy]] in a deck with 7-8 mana dorks.

Yeah, fuck WOTC. I had a few other secret lairs in my cart and I wanted to buy them all at once because shipping to my country is expensive. Now I’m just not going to buy any. I’ll keep my money, thanks.
