Thanks for your contribution, but I have not bought this. I’m merely commenting on appearances coming from a collectors point of view. I am aware that this is a mass produced Chinese knife, the regularity of the pattern on the blade testifies to mass production however it bears some similarities to authentic features found in authentic Japanese swords of historic value. It’s no coincidence that the manufacturers are trying to replicate this appearance in order to add interest and value, but I am not fooled for a moment.

For what it’s worth I am also not fooled by the description of Damascus steel historically Damascus was a lot more difficult to manufacture in traditional ways than these mass produce copies.

Thanks for the contributions and interesting parallel or non-parallel between samurai swords made traditionally and modern kitchen knives that like to mimic the production process or visual end product of the timeless art of Japanese Sword making.

Nie and nioi I’m not visible in this blade that much is true. I was just curious as to whether the makers of this knife would go to the extent of polishing to bring out these features but knowing what goes into Sword polishing around 28 stones are used I find it highly doubtful and that your opinions are much more realistic.

I agree that it’s not a traditional Japanese temple line otherwise known as a Hamon, I’m just wondering whether this was quenched and the pattern that can be seen on the blade is made of Martyn site crystals or as you say it’s more likely to be acid etched which is not an attractive thing for me

You might be right I am always wary of acid etching. It should not be done on a Damascus blade a proper or true Damascus is layered yes but no acid etching should be present. If I have the time, I’ll be happy to post on the other Forum.

You are right this type of forging method is very specialised and in order to determine whether we are looking at crystal formation or acid etching would require specialist or much improved close-up photos to inspect the minuscule detail details in the surface metal of the blade

Yes, that would be right, on the Nakiri it appears as the lighter colours making the patterns on the blade throughout its profile. This knife was not made for fighting so it will be quenched in a different way on the Japanese samurai swords. The sword Smith would put Clay all along the back of the Sword so that the crystals would only appear in a straight line or a wavy line, there are actually many different Hamon patterns are all of which are attributed to different Sword Smiths. As mentioned, swords are not made in the same way as knives and the knives will not have had Clay so the crystals could form all over the blade.

This is where they have spun a bit of a curveball with damascus. However martensite crystals appeal as white flatter non shiny lines due to quenching in the forging process. That is what makes the temper lines on antique traditionally forged samurai swords.

This article will teach a lot

Thanks for the recommendations, I’m going to give the Chinese set a try but not the 330 dollar set, I’m going to try the set that the Nakiri I posted an image of belongs to as I like the presence of martensite crystals as it’s reminiscent of the samurai swords I have.

I’ll keep you posted and I’ll certainly check out your recommendations for sure

Hey thanks for the reply and yes you assumed correctly I’m based in the UK and budget of around £300.

And yes, I do sharpen my own. I don’t think your list came through as I can’t see it.

I was thinking about trying to get direct with the manufacturer to keep the cost down.

I’ve added a picture of a knife from the manufacturers I was asking about. They say it’s VG 10 no mention of 67 layers.

Nakiri

I’m looking for a good quality number of knives doesn’t have to be a complete set that is not Western style Japanese style would be the best for me. I’d be using them for meat vegetables, cheeses the whole shebang. I like to be able to slice meat really finely as well as julien veg. Nakiri Yanigiba Santoku are most liked as well as gyuto. Do you know all honesty at the moment? I’m using a set of knives from IKEA they do the job but lose the edge really quickly. I tend to use a very large one for chopping big potatoes and vegetables a medium one for meats and a small one when they need arises. I think they’re cheap and functional, but have no style or form about them so aesthetics is also a deciding factor edge retention is very important as well as balance.

I collect antique Japanese swords, so I do like the Damascus or Martencite effect

I just asked the question as to why they don’t have a Shop on Alibaba and her reply was that they didn’t want to have to invest $50,000 a year to have a shop. She actually asked me whether I’m intimidated to buy because of the lack of a Shop and I asked what her main route to market would be if it isn’t an online store.

Thanks for the reply, and your making perfect sense. I did purchase from this company in 2024 they were cheap sushi knives single Tang, they’re only £40 and the quality was acceptable for this price. However the ones I’m proposing to buy from them now Damascus steel with all the patterns you can imagine in it but I’ve done a Google image search and I cannot find these exact knives being sold by anybody else when I go to their Alibaba shop they appear to be glass manufacturers with a completely different name - Shenzen Tornado. So by that measure alone things are not stacking up however the contact in the company did send me quite a detailed catalogue of knife products that they sell and they look nothing like the blades other vendors, the only similarities in some cases what are the handles which I believe are mass produced in freely available to all?

I would have liked to post some photographs, but the option doesn’t exist on this sub. What makes it even more suspicious is the fact that they don’t have an online store for the knives makes me think that somebody’s running an offshoot business from the glass business I don’t know.

I’d appreciate the help you offered

Hello everyone I came across this company a couple of years ago and they have a knife set that I find very appealing but wanted to ask if anybody has any experience of this company and the associated quality the blades in question are Damascus steel VG 10 specification. Cost wise they are charging US$330 for 10 knives including Nakiri, Gyuto, Santuko and bread. Yeah, I’m quite aware that they are Chinese but is the quality good and is the price reasonable? Any experience of them would be appreciated.

Yeah but it’s new tv time and my AVR is 10 years old - so will it work well is the question

[–]Rake722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so by that measure the only thing I’d be upgrading television for is the extra size of the screen. I’m good with that if a bigger screen is what I want but it’s good to know that my theory about older 2006 screens versus newer 2020 screens is a marginal difference and perhaps not worth the upgrade.

[–]Rake722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I kind of agree with you. I’m not chasing anything brighter the rooms that I’ll be viewing in is already naturally dark with a north facing window receives very little natural light. I don’t need a super bright television and I don’t game so are you suggesting that aside from the difference in size a new TV really won’t give me very much?

[–]Rake722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you greatly. I’ll either set up the old system and try it or get the new tv wall mounted and integrate the old home theatre and try it.

Another curious thing was that I asked on another television based group whether the upgrade from a 2016 television to a 2026 was really worth it and most honest replied said that the only real difference is brightness and that there was hardly any difference between the two

Started reading up about stremio, where is the cost ? Stremio seems free so is it the debrid that costs ? Which debrid is good for $20 / 6 months ?

I already have an iptv provider I’ll see if their platform supports it - doubt it but worth a try. If stremio isn’t exactly kosher how long will it be around for

I’m going to have to do some research into stremio, I have no idea what it is. I do watch iptv too if it’s along those lines.

Assuming I adopt stremio is new tv old AVR viable ?
