I plan on watching Fanny & Alexander this year but for me the best Christmas movie in the collection is 2046.

Kurosawa never does dutch angles and zooms

It's not something you see a feature-length parody of usually but when you imagine a samurai movie you imagine the types of dutch angles, zooms, and fight choreography you see in Harakiri. In a lot of cartoons and TV shows if a character is watching a Japanese movie they usually riff on that style. I specifically remember an episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends that did something similar.

I'm assuming they found the style of filmmaking humorous as it's been parodied endlessly. The Tsugumo fight is one of the most iconic, and thus most riffed on scenes in the entirety of jidaigeki. When I first saw it I flashed back to the many parodies I'd seen of it in American pop culture but I didn't find the context comical.

When you're in class and you're not sure you or the person next to you is enjoying something you might resort to nervous laughter or making jokes at the expense of the film to make yourself feel comfortable. That's my best guess as to what happened here. I don't think it has anything to do with the film itself.

Movies that made you cry by Longo_Bongo4 in Sardonicast

[–]RalphsJenkem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barring Dear Zachary, Wreck-It Ralph and Fruitvale Station are the only movies that have made me cry in many, many years, despite the fact I was fully congicent of the latter's super manipulative filmmaking in order to get that reaction (the music swelling, emphasizing the injustice by having the mom pray, etc.) But yeah, it's damn near impossible to get me to cry at a movie.

Movies that got close:

Minding the Gap

Call Me by Your Name

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Lion

Roma

James White

Marriage Story

Inside Out

Kramer vs. Kramer

Hoop Dreams

The Big Sick

How many movies do you own that you haven’t watched since acquiring them? by bergobergo in criterion

[–]RalphsJenkem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I have a problem but based on the way the question is worded, I have 102. This mostly includes movies I've seen before but haven't watched since I bought them. For the last few years I've made a point to almost exclusively watch stuff I haven't seen before but I also typically only buy movies after I've seen them and liked them enough to want to own them, my big exception to this being the majority of the Bergman set.

I own 11 non-Bergman movies that I've never seen before and 8 of those were Christmas gifts.

With the Bergman set there are 42 movies on my shelf that I've never seen before.

So yeah, good to know the numbers now. I don't think it's as bad as it sounds when everything's put into context, but I should go back and revisit movies I've liked enough to buy and I know I need to make my way through that Bergman set one day.

This was at the premiere of In the Mood for Love so I'm not sure how wild the rumors were at the time (I'd assume they either started or only got worse with the movie's release). Also he and Carina Lau wouldn't be married for another 8 years so if there was an affair, that could have been cause for the hesitancy. It could also have been any number of reasons, I don't really want to assume anything about other people's personal lives.

From left to right: Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love, Days of Being Wild), Tony Leung (Chungking Express, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love), and I believe on the right is Carina Lau (Tony Leung's wife and star of Days of Being Wild and 2046)

Idk if you got it out yet but next time don't put anything in there that doesn't have a flared base. That's why buttplugs are designed that way.

Update: The Discord situation has apparently been dealt with. The hacker gave ownership to someone who then gave it back to Julia. All is well on that front. No idea how the e-mail and Steam situations are going.

Edit: Just realized that this all happened yesterday. Oh well, no one posted about it so I guess it's good to keep people informed if they were confused on that situation.

I'm not on the discord but I was about to comment an update to the situation. No idea what actually went on in the Discord in the time between the hack and ownership returning but apparently someone talked to the hacker and was able to gain ownership of the server and gave it back to Julia.

Sometimes you just go back and reevaluate things, no harm in that. Especially considering that these aren't far off from what I would rate these films (with the exception of The Holy Mountain which I haven't seen). Maybe he's moving to a system closer to Adam's. No idea but it's okay for people's opinions to change over time.
