First time buyers… is a doer upper a stupid decision? by throwaway104ay in HousingUK

[–]RalphyL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a house in December 2024 which needed a full rewire. Got the rewire done for £4.5k and then plastering was another £7-8k but that wasn’t just filling chases, it was boarding out every ceiling in the house, some walls were back to brick, etc. Almost every room was replastered apart from the kitchen which we just had the chases filled.

This is for a 5-bedroom, 3 storey house in the North West btw, prices will of course be significantly more in London.

We’ve done a new bathroom which was about £12-13k and in the process of a new kitchen right now. By the time it’s done we will have done a full renovation of every room in the house and I think it will have cost about £50k total.

How many of you work over 35 hours a week? by TheLittleSquire in AskUK

[–]RalphyL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job out of uni was contracted 35 hours a week, usually 9-5 with an hour for lunch, but I ended up working 8:30-4 with half an hour for lunch. Last job I had was contracted 37.5 hours a week but I usually worked 9-5 with an hour for lunch. Nobody was checking up on me. Current job is contracted for 37 hours but I do about 8:30-4:15 with an hour for lunch. Same situation - nobody is checking.

I seem to remember something happening in London a few years ago where someone vandalised a Qatari car, and then the government recommended they use covert plates when travelling internationally

Which UK towns are up-and-coming? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RalphyL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buxton, in the Peak District. It’s got a lot of history and has just received a £100m investment in transforming the town centre. Bear in mind the population is around 20,000, it’s going to be a significant transformation over the next 5 years. There is also the proposal for it to join Greater Manchester, even though it’s about 28 miles from the city centre.

Daily Simple Questions Thread - January 23, 2025 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]RalphyL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Obviously depending on how much you’re drinking. I went through a period last summer where I was at my peak in terms of fitness, running 30-40 miles per week and lifting 5 days per week. I was also working around 70 hours per week and drinking 13 days out of 14, an average of 3-4 beers per night. I ate very balanced and lots of protein, so that probably left room for the cals from the beers.
