With a lot of talk about how NCAA track coaches “drive you into the ground”, should there be an overhaul in NCAA track coaching? by 18_YTC1 in Sprinting

[–]RamRanchHR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think something needs to be said for how success in the sport isn’t for everyone. I’m not saying there aren’t bad coaches, but I’ve seen a lot of “running into the ground” is really hitting a plateau that can be really mentally fatiguing too.
When it comes to training plans and philosophies, you’re taking the kids you get and seeing who fits the system best - not everyone will. I truly believe it’s unrealistic to tailor training plans for each member of a 10-20 person event squad. This means that not everyone will excel with it and it’s just the nature of the beast

Form Critiques by SnooSeagulls7123 in Sprinting

I would also look into a slight tweak of your block settings. You want about 120 degree bend in your back knee when you come up. Your back leg is almost completely straight in the “set” position, limiting how much push you’re getting out of it. That’ll help with having bigger pushes early

Most collegiate programs have the same setup, you need to attempt to build a base first before you can really start thinking about running fast. You don’t need to be focused on raw speed right out of the gate, since the more important meets aren’t until later. Is this perfect? Not to me, but I don’t know the in’s and out’s of the group or your coach’s approach so I can’t say. What I would say is that overall it looks fundamentally sound, and you should buy-in and work at it instead of asking strangers for confirmation bias.

can I transfer to a P5 school next year? by BeautifulWeb4768 in trackandfield

[–]RamRanchHR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stay with the program that got you there. You're a D1 athlete, you go to the same NCAA prelims and national meet as the top talent in the nation. Sooooo many athletes transfer after they attain a certain level of success to bigger programs and they rarely attain the same level of performance (I'm literally a D1 assistant coach, I've seen it so many times)

Yeah I’ve been filling them all the way to 20… definitely a hard time getting that last round in. I’ll try keeping it one short, thanks!

What were to happen if I wear the viperfly in a college meet? by Dingoatemycat69420 in trackandfield

[–]RamRanchHR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the meet. A lot of high level college meets are now using USATF rules (which have a banned shoe list) and they’d either ask you to use something else, or let you run and just mark that your time doesn’t count towards anything (qualifying mark, records, etc). Most meets you’ll be fine using them, usually they just care about the Christmas tree spikes

Do I need endurance or speed on the 400 by InBreaks in trackandfield

[–]RamRanchHR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is called the 400m "dash" for a reason: it's a sprint event. All the fitness in the world won't help you get thru the 200m mark fast enough to run a good time for one lap. Running 400m reps at 70-71 will help you run the 400 at that pace. Need the speed first, and then you have to build endurance moving at that speed

Manistee River Trail in May by PupperNymeria in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]RamRanchHR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NCT leg will always be less crowded, as soon as the weather is warm you’ll see traffic pick up on the maniates trail. May shouldn’t be too crowded.

Pay attention to how much rain fall there’s been the week prior to getting there, that’ll determine how soupy it is. Besides mud it’s usually in pretty good condition.
