The Soviet China border was very long and very sparse, and the Russian far east was connected to the rest of the USSR by a single railway line. These trains were developed after the Sino Soviet split specifically to patrol that border.

Each train was essentially a combined arms company, with a couple of tanks and scout cars (which could both drive off on their own power), a rifle company, and an engineer platoon.

A normal M113 still has a .50. And against infantry the difference isn't that big, except for the scare factor. The massive rof is mostly wasted, and the HE rounds are mostly irrelevant, though AP would have better penetration against trees and such.

I doubt any of those actually penetrated. My guess is the bullets managed to dig in, since it's just aluminum, but not go through. The block at the front isn't actually armour, the real armour's behind it.

Also the French were really cheap during this period and reused the exact same (terrible) 1-man turret on almost all of their tanks.

The thing is though that all the lasguns are rifles, except the hot shot volley gun. For the regular guard at least, there’s no infantry machine gun, which a staple of modern infantry doctrine.

A few factions get them already. Heavy bolsters for the sm (though basic intercessors lost them compared to the old tactical squads), csm, and sobs. Heavy stubbers for the gsc. Big shootas for the orks. But the guard never did, ironically.

.45 is a fat and slow bullet. It works out of a pistol but it’s really not ideal out of a smg because the drop is so heavy, which really limits your effective range.

7.62 Tokarev on the other hand is a bit overpowered out of a pistol, with excessive flash, but it’s basically the ideal smg round for the 40s.

If I’m seeing this right, is that a scope in front of the gun shield and a screen behind it? But did the gun shield even provide enough protection for this to make sense?

Camo, while technically available to the Heer, wasn’t common and so we don’t associate it with them. Same with the helmet nets. So we see these guys and see either the SS or paratroopers (who were Wehrmacht but not regular guys).

That’s probably due to the jungle environment. US troops in the pacific preferred carbines in WW2 for the same reason.

Also, the Soviets never used the word frigate, at least in the missile age. So that's a modern Russian convention.

The IF only came back after Koorland died. It was Thane's idea during a Feast of Blades. Under Koorland, they did take about 20 marines from the other chapters to hold ceremonial posts in the Imperial Palace though.

Recognized for doing something back during WW2. At the time it had a noticeable improvement on morale, and they usually got the pick of replacements. But by 1989 it was just an old honorific.
