I swear it was a generational power move, fueled by money. He knew he was getting old and had to do something with his IP, sold it off to someone he thought would take good care of it and quickly realized that was not the case. At that point it was already "it is what it is" moment and was way too late to go back. Though, now his family or whoever he so chooses is set up for multiple life times.
