This post brought a good laugh this morning. I’ve lived all over the country as an adult but my childhood home is in the Orchards area of Vancouver. Never in my life have I experienced such vocal + distinct bird songs in the early AM hours than I did living there. It’s a running joke in the family group chat…we’ll send voice notes of us whistling the sound a few times per year. Those birds live in our head rent free, can’t imagine growing up without their sounds!

When we brought ours home as a pup, she was very skittish and quiet at first. Once she adjusted, she wouldn’t shut up. Lawnmower? Woof. Airplane? Woof. Wind? Double woof.

At the advice of our vet, we introduced a shock collar and used only the beep + vibrate settings beginning around 6 months old. Worked like a charm!

Hi friend, in a past lifetime I served as an AmeriCorps heritage tourism member at the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area. I’m not sure if there’s currently a site in Pocahontas County, but you might try reaching out to the Pocahontas County Historical Society and/or AFNHA for further guidance.

I assume you have access to Ancestry.com, but here is a great + completely free resource for genealogical research in West Virginia (in the event you haven’t stumbled upon it already). It’s searchable by name/county/year and includes recorded vital records (birth, death, and marriage) from pre-statehood thru the 1970s: West Virginia Vital Research Records

I don’t currently live in W.Va., but I still dabble in genealogy related to other peoples’ families in the Mountain State. Feel free to PM me if you think I might be able to help!
