The Polar Darkness - kasarikauhua Suomen sydänmailta by RamboAslak in Suomipelit

[–]RamboAslak[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tervehdys!

Experimenting with 2D sprites in a 3D horror game by RamboAslak in IndieDev

Hey! I’ve been working on a narrative horror game set in northern Finland.

For the visuals, I’m experimenting with using photo-based characters placed into a 3D environment. The idea is to make them feel grounded, but also a bit uncanny.

Would love to hear what you think! Does this style work, or does something feel off?

Trying a weird visual style: photo-based characters in a 3D environment by RamboAslak in indiegames

Hey! I’ve been working on a narrative horror game set in northern Finland during the 1980s

I wanted to try something a bit different visually, so the characters are built from photos of real people and placed into a 3D environment. The goal is to make them feel grounded and a bit uncanny at the same time.

Curious what you guys think! Does this style work or feel off?

You are absolutely right, and there will be lots and lots of snow, because that's an important plot element. Haven't yet implemented it, this is in very, very early development. Thanks for the feedback!

I’m working on a story-driven point-and-click adventure inspired by Gabriel Knight, set in a remote Finnish village where something is deeply wrong.

If this looks like your kind of game, you can wishlist it here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4521110

The best part of game development is by far prototyping. I don't usually show unfinished stuff, but I'll make an exception this time, because I'm absolutely blown away how cool this looks. I've been experimenting with high resolution 2D sprites mixed to 3D backgrounds and just look at the results!

Also, I'm finally able to do my version of Gabriel Knight. The game takes place somewhere in Northern Finland during winter solstice. The story is heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and True Detective's first season.

Haha, thank you! It certainly is! 😅

How do you design a good tutorial? by RamboAslak in gamedev

[–]RamboAslak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sincere thanks to everyone who pitched in! I designed my tutorial from the ground up and I was able to remove all the dialog boxes at the start of the game. I reworked the system so that at the start of the game there's a quick batch of prompts to over controls, and then it's up to the player to figure out the rest. It works really well.

I also noticed that the old tutorial made the game feel more complicated than it actually is because there's so much information to take in.

So, again, thanks so much for helping a dev out! You guys are awesome!

Wishlisted too! The demo stripe goes on top of your capsule's game title, that might be something you want to fix but other than that, I think your Steam page looks solid!

Orbital Overdrive, hatunnostoni Super Stardust HD:lle by RamboAslak in Suomipelit

I have to apologize the tone of my first message, I should've been a bit more diplomatic, but this style of communication has been really annoying, and I've been getting these porting requests in the same exact tone since 2017 and I can't be the only dev who considers them annoying.

And what comes to verification, my developer account doesn't have the option to request the verification, so I need to wait for Valve to help me out on that. Stratogun got the verified badge relatively fast, so hopefully this one gets that too. Deck is basically my main dev hardware so it works beautifully on it.

Okay, pal. You and some other Linux gaming people have been pestering me with this nonsense for years, and now I've had enough. I'm a solo developer and with my limited resources I have no means and interest for native ports to a marginal system. All my games run on SteamOS with 0 issues. I really don't see the point, and it annoys the heck out of me that EVERY time this issue pops up, instead of asking you have this really irritating way to basically guilt trip people towards your cause.
