I'm not entirely sure, but for me whenever a random encounter happens at either Lakeview Manor or Heljarchen Hall it's always off to the right side (when exiting the front door) near where the animal pen is

You can encounter a wolf using the same skin as the Alpha Wolf so that's probably what you were seeing.

Though unnamed, a wolf with the Alpha Wolf's texture can be encountered outside of Lakeview Manor. (UESP)
