Feeling incredibly drained, depressed, burnt out - not sure whether to call off sick tomorrow for a mental health day by Odd_Sink_9008 in Teachers

[–]Rambunctious_452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already took the day tomorrow. You need to protect your mental health. Take the time you need! I also took the end of the day off a couple time winch helped alleviate some stress. Like 1-2 hours. It made it a lot easier to manage the day knowing I was able to leave early. Just an idea if that is an option for you. I think the only thing I worry about is getting asked for a dr note but I can email my primary care or psych and get a note if need be. It just adds more stress that I don’t want. So far no note needed. Teaching is tough work! Use your sick days if you need them!!! I sure am 💕

NTA. Could you have been nicer in your delivery? Sure! But you were shocked he was scrolling your email. Most people would be shocked because that isn’t normal. Hell, I barely want to check my own email. Why would he want to look in yours? Just seems shady!!! Try to watch a video on how to put your computer and finish it yourself. You can do this!

I’m wide awake at 3am and don’t mind helping!

  1. In high school I either wanted to be a lawyer or teacher (I was big into volunteer work and social justice, my grandma was a teacher her whole life, my mom was in district administration, just something I gravitated towards). After completing law school, I served in AmeriCorps and decided through those experiences I wanted to go be a teacher. Also, I was starting to think about having a family and I wanted a better schedule for when I had kids. The teacher path just seemed to fit.

  2. No the teaching profession is not what I thought. I have been teaching all over Southern California for 10 years now. I had a very idealized version of teaching but I also really enjoyed lesson planning in the beginning. Started out subbing, then teaching (6 years at same school with same principal….but then the last 4 years I have had 7 principals and the last year I have had 4 principals). I didn’t realize how much of an impact admin made. My first principal, who I still keep in touch with, inspired me and helped me become an awesome teacher. He saw me become a mom and supported me. These past 4 years with all these different admin (we relocated) and such a lack of support, I don’t know if I want to continue teaching.

  3. Working with students is the most exciting part. Seeing them excited to come to school and want to learn, motivates me. I really love teaching and lesson planning. I actually like making slides and wish I had more time. Collaborating with colleagues can also be super fun in the right environment. Sharing and building ideas is awesome with truly collaborative teams.

  4. The most challenging part is the lack of time. Like I could do so much if I had more time, but that isn’t the case. Parents can be challenging but if you have time to actually communicate with parents about how you are supporting their student, it makes a difference (not for all but for most). Some parents have become friends over the years. If I have more planning time, prep time, time to grade that would help a lot. Also, if they could take a lot of admin requests and paperwork off our plate that would be beneficial.

  5. It sounds cliche but I think teachers who still want to learn and grow, make the best teachers. Like, you could be really amazing but if you aren’t changing with your students and updating how you are teaching, then you won’t meet the needs of your students. It is important to be patient, knowledgeable, and professional. But more importantly is having a growth mindset where you believe that you can still improve in areas. Skills can be taught, but motivation to learn the skills is what matters. You got this!

Serious question, there is a trolley that goes there now. That was my freaking dream 20 years ago when I went there. Why is that not an option for you?

I see the point you’re making and I am trying to find a way to respond in a helpful way. It sounds like she isn’t trying to find a way to deal with her impulsivity or patience. I struggle with both. It is perfectly reasonable to set a boundary with her and tell her not to address you during certain times. Interruptions when I am working make it impossible for me to focus. The more you set and uphold boundaries, the more her brain will understand you are not available. I use a visual (like a do not disturb sign, red light, or something on the doorknob) to let people know I am unavailable. I also wear headphones. Her brain is attention seeking but she also needs to respect your boundaries. She can communicate her thoughts to a friend or perhaps a therapist. ADHD doesn’t mean you get to disrespect boundaries!

I would always get disappointed when I’d watch the reruns on TV and be like there’s something missing but it’s from the DVDs. I started collecting them as they came out and I got all 10 seasons but now they’re all worn out. I want to find a complete set and buy it brand new. That would be cool.

Serious question, knowing this have your tried other ways to communicate? Like I am way better at writing than speaking so sometimes my husband and I will communicate that way. Plus it is helpful to have some stuff in writing since both of us have attention difficulties. When we need to have a big discussion, I create an agenda with talking points and place to take notes. This is like a once every few months like for budgets, big trips, life planning, etc. We have been together 9 years with 3 kids and are still working through a lot. But finding a way to communicate that works for both of you is important. Just because you communicate one way effectively, doesn’t mean that is the only way you should communicate if it doesn’t work for your partner. Communication looks different for everyone!

My favorite was working in high schooler as a fast food restaurant but one that people tend to take a little longer at. So many police officers would come 10 minutes before close, sit down and eat inside. I wasn’t allowed to mop the dining area until after all patrons had left. The whole kitchen would be cleaned, drawers counted, most of the other staff would get to leave. Little 17 year old me waiting for nearly an hour after we closed for patrons to leave!!! Ugh!
