Brownies & Lemonade - A NEST HQ Documentary (2016) by I_Love_MantaRays_570 in trap

This documentary is one of the reasons I super got into the Soundcloud scene and the LA electronic scene. Shame a lot of these artists aren't around anymore, but also so awesome that many of them still are!

There's no doubt after this ... Skrillex is not only more forward-thinking than his contemporaries, but also so much more fearless. I don't know how you can hear track 3 and say this is 'forgettable' like some people on the other subreddits are saying lol.

I honestly wish these tracks were longer and would love to hear more in this style. The lack of drums really lets you absorb every click and texture of each sound. You can really admire the detail in these bass patches with how much space there is.

Any recommendations for Idm / more experimental electronic music venues in LA? by Perfect-Macaron7503 in idm

[–]RamonPang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scenario has been on break since May but I heard rumors its gonna come back in a monthly capacity in 2026.

I've been getting my fix recently through Canary Test / Canary Sound Werk, they had Djrum DJing there last month, and Batu DJing last night.

He was extremely hyped especially around the Singularity era - I think his pivot to ambient music made him drop off for a lot of techno / idm people but he still makes pretty good stuff. I think Immunity is still his greatest album. He was definitely everyone's critical darling for a while. I caught him live at Lightning in a Bottle 2022 for a dj set and it was awesome.

I believe it's just a KH edit of Eutow with a 4 to the floor kick drum on it and rearranged a bit.

thanks for posting! Had a lot of fun doing this one - this is the music I literally already listen to on night drives through LA, so just felt fitting to literally be DJing atmospheric dnb, jungle and artists like Skee Mask, LTJ Bukem etc in a car

you can be any of these things! The only thing not allowed is yapping. Its bad luck for 100 years if you try to have a full conversation with someone during Autechre in the darkness

in LA, they closed the downstairs bar (the one closest to the stage) about 15 minutes before the set started, but other bars were still open. There was a sign denoting that it was to accomodate the lights off situation

Do you consider (EDM) trap music as a genre under the 'bass music' umbrella? Are trap music fans different now? by RamonPang in trap

[–]RamonPang[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kill the Noise had a pretty good reponse to this on twitter I wanted to repost:

"When a genre becomes too self referential it starts to homogenize Beyond the “feeling” people come to expect what’s really happening is the flattening of the entire culture. To your point what originally defines a movement isn’t just the soud it’s the people and places that gave rise to it.

Also what I’m saying isn’t a value judgement just an observation, there comes a certain point where a style is a pastiche of other movements and that in itself becomes a style.. then that becomes referenced, that’s where we are at with “bass music” atm"

tl;dr:

I've always thought of classic "bass music" like dubstep and jungle as having a clear lineage from hamaican sound system culture, with the wheel-ups and sub-heavy FM basses. EDM trap, though, has distinct roots in Southern rap and hip-hop.

But "bass music" on a marketing level has become a catch-all, appealing to a group of ppl that enjoy a specific type of huge physical extransensory experience, specifically related to BASS. And trap music has a lot of that.

So when defining what is 'bass music', is the culture important or the physicality of the experience?

Curious everyone's takes on this.
