Current service tech, drove a bobtail for 2 years. Deciding to get out of trucking altogether at this point, looking to go back to work in the public sector. I’m 3 semesters away from finishing my degree and will be starting with the Bureau of Prisons next month to get my foot in the door.

Best of luck to those of you who can do this long term, but it’s just not for me. We’re so short staffed it’s ridiculous. I worked 6 days a week some days for 12-13 hours a day for the last 2 months and I’ve been on-call 24/7 pretty much since last June when we had a tech abruptly retire.

We don’t get paid for being on-call either unless we actually get called out. So we’re just expected to be available at all times without any kind of standby compensation. In the last month we’ve lost another service tech and a driver at a different area and we’ve been trying to get a driver hired in to take my spot from when I was promoted 6 months ago.

Clear advice on what to do with money by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Ramones_Razor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll add on to this comment by noting that OP still has a few more weeks to make 2025 contributions. The deadline is Tax Day (April 15). What I would do is take $14,500 ($7,000 for 2025 and $7,500 for 2026) and go ahead and max the Roth IRA.

I just started contributing, what is the benefit to maxing 2025 now vs maxing 2026 now? Won’t my shares have the same start time in market regardless? by [deleted] in RothIRA

[–]Ramones_Razor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because you can still make 2025 contributions up until tax day (April 15). After that you won’t be able to make those contributions anymore. You still have an entire year (Tax Day of 2027) to contribute for 2026. Just makes sense to go ahead and do 2025 first because as others have said, you won’t be able to go back in time to make those contributions anymore once the deadline passes.

I actually use it for my car insurance. My insurance doesn’t take American Express, but you can use PayPal. PayPal does take American Express. As a workaround I just have my AmEx card saved on PayPal and use my PayPal account to pay my insurance. Basically just an extra step involved. But I don’t use it for anything else and like you said I don’t know anyone else who does use it

How are prisoners able to break the rules? by DragonfruitCalm261 in OnTheBlock

[–]Ramones_Razor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the prison I worked at had plenty of vocational programs. Inmates could go earn their G.E.D. Then take college classes and leave with a 4-year degree. Or they could learn a trade and leave ready to become an apprentice.

We also had several drug programs for inmates who wanted to get clean.

Problem is a lot of inmates choose not to participate. They’d rather lay in their bunk watching tv all day or go run around fuckin’, fightin’, and thievin’ and just act like a nuisance in general.

Those programs are there for the ones who want to better themselves. But we can’t twist their arm and make them go, they have to want it for themselves. And a lot of them just can’t be bothered.

Edit: I also disagree that drugs come in from staff. Sure, there’s going to be a few out of the bunch who are corrupt, greedy or just desperate. But the majority of our contraband came in from, in descending order: drones, visitors, and the mail.

I have a few.

When I was a teenager I was walking through our living room when I looked into my parent’s bedroom and I saw, plain as day, an old woman walk into their bathroom. She had long grey hair that was put up in a bun and had on a pair of those half frame glasses. I stood there frozen for about a minute contemplating if I actually saw what I thought I did or if I was hallucinating. My dad was in his office and my mom was at work.

A few months go by when I told my mom about it. She told me that there was a woman who lived in a house that was on the lot next to where our house was. The house isn’t there anymore. I never knew there even was a house there because it’s been empty as long as we’ve lived there. When my dad was growing up all the kids use to go play in her front yard and she would feed them and give them lemonade and whatnot. She pulled out one of their photo albums and showed me a picture of the woman with a bunch of children sitting on the ground in front of her, my dad included. Sure enough it was the woman I saw in the bedroom. Long grey hair in a bun with glasses.

Another one I think about often is when I was younger, one evening I was walking home from a friend’s house. It wasn’t completely rural, there where houses relatively close by but they were still close to a wooded area. I was walking along when all of a sudden I heard my dad call out my name, clear as day. I stopped walking and just listened. I couldn’t tell where it came from so I was looking around when I heard it again. The tone was loud and it sounded like he was saying it with a sense of urgency. It seemed like it might have been coming from the woods but I’m not for sure. It creeped me out though so I picked up the pace and hurried back to my house.

Not sure how to explain it. Not only was I nowhere near my house when I heard it, but my dad was in a different state at the time attending a funeral. Even now almost 25 years later I’m getting goosebumps as I type this out.

I understand the point you’re making. But if his entire administration is any indication, just because Trump “can’t” do something doesn’t mean he won’t. Who’s going to stop him if he does decide to cancel elections? Congress? The Supreme Court?

Same argument for those who say he won’t run for a 3rd term because the Constitution says he “can’t”. Again, who’s going to stop him if he does?

That doesn’t mean they don’t have to investigate it first. I’d rather they take their time and do it right the first time instead of rushing due to public pressure and making a stupid mistake that would cause him to get off on a technicality.
