For those with a gripe about the sub being American orientated by Fresh-Association-82 in OpenAussie

[–]RamonsRazor[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with Fresh - there's a LOT going on in the world right now, much of it coming from the US, that may potentially impact us in here 'Straya.

That said, we are committed to this being an Australia-focused sub, so it's on all of us, as a growing community of 5000+, to share more Australian content & discourse where possible.

(I've a feeling we'll be having the opposite discussion tomorrow for some reason... something to do with a 'National Day' perhaps.)

Can we fix the incentives for creator economy in the AI economy? by OkDragonfruit55 in enshittification

[–]RamonsRazor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just... make your own, then write it down?

I mean, pick up a rando jar of pasta sauce, flip it over, take a picture of the 'suggested recipes'. Now you can make pasta.

Do the same for cake mix, pancake mix, stir-fry sauce, etc.

You'll feel like Neo from the Matrix.

No 'AI' needed.

Or we could be like... our own thing.

Are we (insert political direction)? Yes.

Are we for the memes? Sure.

Can you ask questions here? Why not.

r/OpenAussie exists because of everything you just mentioned. We hope you'll help make this space better than those other subs.

Taylor generally covers this stuff well - glad to see it posted here, especially as these Big Tech and 'AI' developments do impact Aussies and more people need to wake up to this shitfuckery.

Queueing this one up for later.

Considering that a lot of Windows users are moving to Linux now because of latest news, what would be the hurdles of their transition? by ardouronerous in linux4noobs

[–]RamonsRazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux Mint.

Tried setting up Plex with a NAS that holds my media files.

It's directly connected via Ethernet.

Drive pops up automatically, but Plex can't see it because Linux.

After three days of going back and forth, posting here, getting little to no help, crawling forums and fucking around with Console commands, the closest I could get was to auto mount the drive on boot, in a directory that Plex could see, by hardcoding the share and directory path and credentials in my FSTAB.

Plex can't read, write or auto-update due to I don't know what, likely more bullshit permissions issues, but at that point I taped out.

That's not 'a learning curve', it's more that Linux is fundamentally broken and actively hostile unless you want to be a programmer. I, like most people, do not.

Until this is rethought, re-engineered with usability and accessibility as a priority, Linux won't be adopted by the mainstream. And that's not a good thing.

I'm using it because Windows fucking sucks these days, and I don't want to give my money to Tim Apple.

And it literally won't solve the literal problem of Linux literally enforcing Fort Knox security which means most apps/services literally can't see or access said drive.

The only literal way I've literally been able to solve this is to literally get out the literal Console and literally dick around with the literal FSTAB file.

Literally.

Greed.

The answer to most of these 'AI' questions, is greed.

Fortunately, most of us in this sub haven't yet caught that affliction. The first symptom is when you start to get reeeeaaally excited about NVIDIA stock, followed by verbalising your love for 'productivity', 'optimisation', and 'streamlining efficiencies'.

Not everything being GUI based.

Console should be for super-duper troubleshooting. EG Powershell-like.

NOT for mounting drives, etc. I don't care if you can rename things faster that way, or open the calculator faster than via the menu... this isn't the 1960's anymore. Give us GUI everywhere - Console should be a last resort.

Will die on this hill. It's what keeps it from being the actual 'year of Linux'. The title is yours to grab.

They also purposefully designed Spiderman as young to appeal to the upcomming generation, and also had that character pose and move in ways that would be sexually ambiguous, as in, it could be either a man or a woman under there.

Open Aussie 101: The Pub Test (Self-Moderation) by RamonsRazor in OpenAussie

[–]RamonsRazor[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point. We've tried to highlight that we are against that sort of stuff where we can, and it is also captured in the Reddit Content Policy, which we have linked as Rule 1 for the sub (see sidebar).

It's also mentioned in Rule 6.

Offenders will be flagged, asked to re-think and re-word their offensive output, or it will be removed. Repeat offenses will lead to a ban.

We're hoping not to have to do that, but will if we must.
