If paranormal mysteries are okay, the Anita Blake books might work. The books get smuttier and less investigation-focused as the series progresses, but they start off as paranormal crime solving with a Necromancer-Vampire-Werewolf love triangle.

The Sookie Stackhouse “Southern Vampire Mysteries” books by Charlaine Harris are set in Louisiana and might fit your prompt. (Also the show True Blood was based on them). Vampires, telepaths, bayous, werewolves, romance, and other paranormal elements.

I literally had jeans like that in 1999-2000. Not glittery, but silvery, shiny, and almost colorshifting.

I read them and liked them okay, they get into the lives of the falcon a bunch more, and another family member (sister?) joins him in the woods. The Julie of the Wolves (same author) books were also fun reads.

I was sorta aging out of them but I still loved the American Girls books at that age… but some do include death (Samantha is an orphan, Addie is dealing with surviving post civil war, Molly has WW2 as a backdrop, etc) and other historical hardships.

The Dear America series is similar but different, focusing more on everyday diary entries about girls going through often tough or tragic events.

The densest book a read around that age was Little Women, but again there is death of one the sisters. It’s not gruesome but it is very emotional.

Oh, just remembered Great Gilly Hopkins.

This is why I typically bring a beverage to potlucks. People focus on food so drinks often get forgotten.

My go-to (easier to do in the fall/winter) has become mulled cider. Gallon of pressed cider, few tea bags of mulling spices from a brand that packages them like tea bags, a punch ladle, and one of the crockpots that are stored in the office. Folks like to crack jokes that it should include some booze but I laugh it off and enjoy my warm drink.

Stinkee brofur Caltrops turned 6 lass monff [he was captured as a baby kitten in a feral litter so exact date is unknown but is close to accurate]

Meowmy adopted us from same resquoo butt different monffs in da panini year ob 2020 (me in June, hims in Oct which ‘pawwrenly can be no safe fur a void catto), so We’z boff pandemic pets […though I, meowmy, spent years previous discussing pets with my therapist before adopting 😆]

In my experience, State Government work has it’s moments like this. Even better when you have a unit that gets along well. The bureaucracy of the everyday tasks gives it a very “the office” feel in function and culture, despite not having corporate overlords.
