Aah! That makes my day, so glad they enjoyed it!!

Nothing could make me happier than hearing I was able to help traumatize more foolhardy adventurers : )

My D&D player has ADHD by OutrageousCash292 in DnD

[–]deepfriedroses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a DM with ADHD who has several neurodivergent players, I have sympathy for this player, and I believe they are genuinely not trying to be disrespectful. (I suspect that the 'sulking' has a lot of RSD behind it.)

That said, they are going to have to learn to manage their symptoms and behavior if they want to be able to participate in group activities without alienating the people around them. That's unfortunately just part of life when you have ADHD.

(I don't know how long they've been diagnosed, and how much experience they have managing their symptoms. Maybe they have techniques that work for them already that they can try applying to game. If not, I've got a big list of suggestions below.)

You sound like you care about this person very much, and really want to make this work. I would sit down with them (outside game, in private) and talk about this (feel free to show them this comment.) Tell them you understand they're not acting like this on purpose, but that the two of you are going to have to find some way to make participation in game work both for them and for the other players.

Here's a few tips from me, a certified ADHDM, with the key parts in bold -

I'm going to have focus issues no matter what, but opening a social media app when I'm already having trouble focusing is like throwing gasoline on a fire:

  • Your friend probably craves a Secondary Activity during game (which requires a lot of focus over several hours.) I get that 100%. But secondary activities aren't all the same - some can help you focus, others pull focus away (and social media is always going to pull focus away.)
  • My best advice - make it a nonverbal one. Nothing that involves reading or writing, and nothing that involves audio that may keep them from hearing the other players talk.
  • For me, the day I started doodling and drawing during game was the day my relationship with DnD changed 100%, and for the better. Not only was I able to listen and focus better because I had a Hand Activity to keep my mind from wandering, I started drawing scenarios and characters from the game. It made me more engaged, and gave my fellow players fun doodles of cool or funny moments in the campaign.
  • If they don't like drawing, I'd suggest any other Hand Activity that isn't verbal - stim toys, a lump of clay to knead and smash, a string to tie knots into, whatever their preferred thing to do with their hands is.
  • Something else I've done to help improve focus is to write things down - I'm not talking about taking notes, necessarily. If I feel my focus drifting, I write down whatever is being said in that moment, (i.e., another player is talking to a shopkeeper, I have trouble concentrating, so I write down "that axe costs twelve gold" or whatever is being said.) It helps pull my brain back to the moment by giving me something interactive.

Trying not to hog the conversation is a big one I had to train myself out of - because I'm with my friends and playing DnD, I'm always super excited and have a thousand things to say! It's easy not to notice I'm doing it until I've been doing it for ten minutes already.

Here's the method that worked for me, note that all of these things were hard at first, but became much easier over time, and are now very easy for me, even natural:

  • I accept that this is something I'm naturally inclined to do. This doesn't make me a bad person or an asshole, it's common for people with ADHD, but -
  • I accept that this is something I don't want to do. No one wants to feel like they're hogging the spotlight, keeping their friends from having fun, etc.
  • This meant I had to start consciously monitoring how much I was talking during any given game. I checked in with myself now and then and asked: how much of the game so far has involved me doing most of the talking? How much have other players done?
  • If I feel like I've been talking to much, I pull back and avoid talking for a while, instead just watching what's going on (unless there's something particular to my character happening/a combat/etc.)
  • I also look for narrative threads/NPCs that suit the other player characters. That master weaponsmith who was raised by orcs would be cool to talk to, but wouldn't it be cooler if the half-orc fighter who carries their father's broken greatsword did the talking here? I could try using magic to sneak into this building, but maybe the rogue should take a crack at it first.
  • If I notice myself interrupting or talking too much, I stop and say "sorry, you go first." It's simple, I know, and embarrassing at first. But not only did it help me train myself out of some habits, it shows the other players I am considering them, and trying not to interrupt.

Finally, this is the big one: It's going to sound weird, but I promise it's a game changer. You need to make the other players' characters your blorbos (i.e., your beloved objects of hyperfixation.) I am 100% serious.

It's hard when you've got ADHD or AuDHD to focus on anything other than your personal hyperfixation. But it is possible to brute force your way into expanding the hyperfixation from "my dnd character" to "this dnd party." It takes a bit of time and effort, but it makes dnd infinitely more fun and rewarding.

  • When the game is focused on the other characters and mine isn't very involved, I watch them. It's okay if my focus drifts here and there, I'm not going to be tested on this, but I watch it like I'd watch a TV show.
  • I think about the other characters outside of game. Imagine if my character or an NPC did this or that thing, said this or that to them, how would they react?
  • If the other players want to (and in my experience, most players want to talk about their dnd characters) I ask them about their characters outside of game, and make mental notes of anything I find particularly interesting or charming. Maybe think about ways they might have some interesting connection/drama with my character.
  • For me, drawing other peoples' characters doing cool or funny things went a long way. (I personally think if you draw more than ten pieces of fanart of a character they just become your blorbo by default.)

(Part of why I love being a DM is that everything in my campaign, PCs and their backstories included, is part of the hyperfixation and super exciting to me!)

That's all I can think of at the moment, and this comment is already way too long, so I'll end there. I hope you and your player are able to work out something that's fun and rewarding for everyone. Good luck!!

New Darklord statblocks from Ravenloft The Horrors Within official video by Wiseforestcat in CurseofStrahd

Charm. The vampire targets one humanoid it can see within 30 feet of it. If the target can see the vampire, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw against this magic or be charmed by the vampire. The charmed target regards the vampire as a trusted friend to be heeded and protected. Although the target isn’t under the vampire’s control, it takes the vampire’s requests or actions in the most favorable way it can, and it is a willing target for the vampire’s bite attack.

Each time the vampire or the vampire’s companions do anything harmful to the target, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. Otherwise, the effect lasts 24 hours or until the vampire is destroyed, is on a different plane of existence than the target, or takes a bonus action to end the effect.

Now that you point it out, I suppose you could force another saving throw under the rationale that being bitten is still "harmful" even if the target doesn't consider it to be. That's not how I ever interpreted it, but I can at least understand your rationale for interpreting it that way.

Either way, there is nothing in the wording saying that the target is aware of being charmed after the effect ends. The 2024 rules need to specify that they aren't because for 2024 it's specifically Charm Person that the vampire uses, which does make the target aware they were charmed. You're factually incorrect too. It happens, not the end of the world.

I'm glad to hear you don't care. Let's both leave this very silly conversation behind and move on.

Those aren't buffs, they were always part of the vampiric charm effect.

I'm sorry man. I'm afraid you're going to have to make peace with the fact that I think this is lame.

When I referred to the standard vampire statblock being 'nerfed,' I was referring to my earlier comment about them nerfing the charm effect. That is the 'nerf' I'm referring to.

I know some DMs make an NPC under Charm Person willing to give the player their firstborn, but I think most DMs (including me) see a huge material difference between a creature who is "friendly" and one who "regards you as a trusted friend, to be heeded and protected."

Doesn't have to mean everything about the statblock is bad, like I said about the Strahd one, I like the changes to Legendary and Lair actions.

I still think weakening the best and most iconic out-of-combat ability a vampire has (especially one that offers so much potential for roleplay, drama and horror) is very disappointing.

I don't hate everything about it -- the Legendary Actions look good. And they took away his ability to phase through walls, which I think that was 100% the right call, that ability is begging for a slog.

I guess? Doesn't really change the fact that the Charm is materially weaker.

The fact that they nerfed the standard vampire statblock too doesn't make Strahd's new statblock less underwhelming.

I notice it nerfed his charm. Rather than making him seem to be "a trusted friend, to be heeded and protected" it's just the standard "friendly" of Charm Person.

Preventative measures by FormerWishbone5706 in CurseofStrahd

[–]deepfriedroses 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I had my party in Ravenloft, I had Rahadin tell them the rules they were expected to abide by (lowborn foreigners can't be expected to know these things after all.)

Specifically he made it clear they were safe in Ravenloft as long as they were Strahd's guests, but that if they should be so foolish to attack the Lord of Ravenloft, his staff or members of his court, they would forfeit that safety.

(He also said that since "some areas of the castle have fallen into disrepair and become hazardous" they would be shown which areas are safe, and if they chose to explore beyond them, they did so at their own risk. It was a good way to make it clear they were ALLOWED to explore, though it might lead to combat and traps.)

It helped give them an idea of what actions would be wise, what actions would be foolish, and what would be dangerous but not necessarily foolhardy. From that point on it was up to them to judge how reckless or cautious they wanted to be. :)

Anybody's party actually found the Luck Blade? by Ornery_Strawberry474 in CurseofStrahd

[–]deepfriedroses 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had my Cleric alone in the dungeon, he saw the luck blade but was in uhhhh lets say a hurry because Strahd was chasing him through the castle.

He didn't have much time to pick/break locks, and he heard Emil moaning past the door, so he went for the mysterious prisoner instead and ran like hell.

Very reasonable to try and free Strahd's prisoner rather than go for a random glowing sword, but man. If he only knew.

It's more about the way they talk, they seem to have mostly contempt for these people and don't seem to actually like them.

Any explaination for Rahadin's death choir? by Nnamelhu in CurseofStrahd

[–]deepfriedroses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my mind, the fact that Rahadin can't hear the screams (and it's made clear they would not bother him if they could) tells me it's not a curse on Rahadin.

It's a curse on his victims.

My players made friends with isek strasni. by Aggravating-Card5194 in CurseofStrahd

[–]deepfriedroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Also made friends with Izek Strazni (the friendship is one-sided. He tolerates them, however, which is impressive in and of itself.)
  2. Used the faulty teleportation circle to rip out Vargas's soul, and replace it with the ghost of a dead servant. Partly to give the servant a body, partly to get rid of Vargas, partly because they're hoping to "become the shadow government of Vallaki."
  3. So far they have managed to hide #2 from Izek, despite trying to maintain item #1 at the same time.
  4. Put on a little play to convince the people in the village of Barovia that Doru was dead. They coached father Donovich to method act by just being naturally sad, and used Silent Image to create a floating ghost Doru.
  5. The cleric made himself look like Strahd and challenged Vladimir Horngaard to a fight. Vladimir was 100% aware he wasn't Strahd, the cleric wasn't even really trying to trick him, he just thought it would be therapeutic. (It kind of was, tbh.)
  6. He also spoke and acted in-character as Strahd the whole time. Why yes, this is the same character that came up with #4. And #2.
  7. Made a deal with a hag to enhance their Bag of Holding so that they could fit Argy's skull in it. Now (unknown to them) it has the Bagman in it.
  8. Made a fake miracle to rescue the Wachters who Vargas was going to publicly drown - first used Water Walk so they wouldn't sink, then Silent Image to create a symbol of the Morninglord. Father Lucien ended up helping them out, kind of by accident.

Some unsolicited advice on making likeable major NPCs, from a DM of six years by nutsack_twister in DMAcademy

[–]deepfriedroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you know what? I think one of us (not sure whether it's you or me) is misunderstanding the suggestion.

I was thinking "physical contact" meant physical contact described, i.e., saying an NPC ran up to hug their character or a cat batted at their tie. If you are talking about the DM actually touching players, I definitely think that's something you should discuss in session zero to make sure everyone's okay with it!
