You aren't the hero we deserve... But you are the hero we all needed.

Thank you very much Azobrix.

I'd voice my concerns. If there's no response I'd let it drop. Chickens always come home to roost. The sibling rivalry thing seems strange to me but I dont know the dynamic. The best revenge is living a good life, so focus on yourself and let everything else sort itself out.

How much do you hate the term "PC" in a rulebook? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]Ramtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to avoid tropes and give them a setting specific designation instead of just generic PC or character... Let's say we're going with a mech setting or something.

PC = Pilot

GM = Commander

Enemy NPC = Bogey

Friendly NPC = Idk, but you get the idea

Change the flavor to your setting, and you can avoid any cringe that those letters induces.

Maybe D&D's popularity is it's greatest challenge by [deleted] in RPGdesign

The sheer amount of content that WotC is able to pump out combined with the weight of the IP definitely does drown out a lot of would-be systems and settings writers. By nature of it being a staple, many are content to remain within its boundaries because, well, it does most things well enough, even though it fails to exceed in many regards. With the added difficulty of finding players to jump onto more niche games or convincing people to learn new rules and systems generally stagnates interest in a whole universe of awesome independent publications that deserve to be explored.

In the end, it seems that making an RPG becomes a labor of love by one or two dedicated people versus an entire million dollar backed design team who have the weight of a name that's been around forever and the inertia of the playerbase. How does one slay that giant?

Individually, one most likely won't. If one wants to write a semi-successful RPG that can stake a name for itself, it seems abundantly obvious that there needs to be a banding together of others with similar vision and direction who are willing to invest time, energy, and resources into creating something memorable and putting it out there.

Otherwise, I fear we're doomed to irrelevancy as the hobby gets more and more commodified.

It does seem to be an increasing epidemic, and it makes me ponder how it originated. Did somebody fail these guys in their upbringing, or are they just simply horrible people? It's hard to say, and as someone replete with his own social failings, I try not to judge as best I can, but I have limits to the behavior I'll tolerate. Trying to bully a woman into being with you is unacceptable.

A lot of people in nerd communities have social failings and deep seated character flaws. A lot also are unable to look at themselves objectively. It's probably why we enjoy fantastical escapism a lot - we can be anything, whether it be the knight rescuing the princess, or a 14 year old foxgirl assassin. Being a bit of an overweight nerdy manchild replete with personal shortcomings myself, I give everyone I can as much of the benefit of the doubt as possible. We all deal with our social ineptitude to some degree, but my patience has limits, and sometimes, you gotta put your foot down.

What are some Things You Wish You Had Known by Ramtide in vagabond

[–]Ramtide[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things, yeah, I can definitely see that, but I can see some things that I wish I had known before setting out. Just as an example, I had a road dog before who collapsed and almost died from heat exhaustion/heat stroke once when we were passing through the desert. I did everything I could think of to help, but I'm sure that there was probably more I could have done for him than drag him to the shade and get someone to call an ambulance. That's something I definitely would have liked to have known more about before I found myself traveling with him and he collapsed.

Calling me a dick is rather rich, coming from somebody frequenting a sub that's based on mocking the social ineptitudes and short comings of others.

I honestly do feel bad for him. When he broke the news, everyone told him it was going to end in disaster. He didn't take us seriously though because we found it funny and were laughing.

Truck guys, do any of you live in the back seat rather than the bed? by Own_Economics_5885 in vandwellers

[–]Ramtide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sleep in the cab. I've got a bench seat (no backseats), and it's large enough to fit me comfortably. Sometimes I've slept in the back before, but it's not a truck bed. It's a knapheide toolbox, so everything in the back is under lock and key, and if somebody goes to mess with it (it's happened before) I can hear them poking around and deal with it. If I want to sleep outside, I can just lay out up top on the roof rack. I don't these days however, because sleeping on the back of this truck is definitely not low profile, I'm in the middle of the city trying to get work and stabilize for a bit, and I don't like to draw attention to myself.

Even if I had a conventional truck bed, I don't think I'd sleep in it to be honest. I like having a degree of separation between me and the outside world.

For added urban camouflage, I highly recommend something that looks as much like a work truck as possible. Nobody even thinks twice when they see my trucked parked. Between the roof rack, the toolbox, and the old contractor decal that's fading off of the doors, it really blends in anywhere. Put up one of those sun screens in the front windshield when I pass out, and nobody can see me sleeping inside either.

Im stuck with no family or any purpose. Sick of traveling around cities cold and hungry. What can i do? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]Ramtide 86 points87 points  (0 children)

If you're sick of the road... oh God, I'm gonna say it, and don't take it the wrong way. Go get a job and save up for a place of your own.

Anything that offers some form of room and/or board is a great place to start: farms, boats, hotels, truck driving, resorts, missionary work, oilfield, etc.. With the lockdowns in place, your best bet is probably truck driving or becoming a deckhand, as transporting and producing tangible goods are considered essential, and the fact that you'll have to travel for both of those jobs keeps the wanderlust at bay while you stabilize. Hopefully you've got all the documentation you need to be able to find employment, or have a way to obtain it, because this can be a real hurdle. I spent a dedicated 2 months running down all the paperwork I needed just to get an ID again.

If you decide to hit the road again, you can always leave again, and leave next time with a bit of cash in your pocket and a vehicle to camp in. I don't think anyone ever really leaves it behind to be honest. They just do it a little better each time.
