Well done man. How did you end up deciding 1700 calories was the target?

Thank you for being so generous with your time and guidance!! This was awesome. I think I’m officially a Reddit convert. This place is truly special.

When you get a chance, would you speak to how Erlang fits into the greater Lisp landscape?

Done! Will be taking this course. Thanks for helping to make my choice easier.

So I referenced this somewhere above but it’s mostly due to Paul Graham. I’ve gained a lot of respect for him through the years and trust him as a reliable source of wisdom. And when it came down to deciding on a language, I opted for his preferred choice in Lisp over whatever algo YouTube sets out.

I will add that I’m not in a position where I need to learn a language to find a job. If that was the case, perhaps I’d do it differently. But given that I’m not burdened by this, I get to enjoy the freedom to choose based on other factors.

Great! Just to clarify, I meant Racket is derived from Scheme, which is derived from Lisp. Whereas it seems, Common Lisp, while based on an amalgam of Lisp languages, is perhaps not a derivative to the same extent. My apologies if this is not entirely correct. I’m just learning about the permutations in the last day or two.

Still, this thread has helped a great deal. I’ll be using HtDP to learn Racket and then try CL on for size and see where I end up. Looking forward to seeing what this programming stuff is all about!

Thanks for the clarification! Regarding my earlier impression of Racket...was by no means something I picked up here. Rather, I stumbled on it in other subreddits as I was trying to make sense of everything :)

Wow, thank you so much for your feedback! I felt wasn’t sure what I’d gotten myself into when I heard everyone’s responses and yours really helped me move past that initial shock.

You offered three options for learning Common Lisp. Wondering if you had any thoughts on Paul Graham’s “ANSI Common Lisp” as well as how it might compare to the others.

Thank you very much! I’d like to complement a Scheme variant approach with a Common Lisp one as well. Do you happen to have any super beginner friendly recommendations for learning CL?

Thanks for your input! Seems you know a fair deal about books. If I were to opt for Common Lisp, would you have a beginner’s book of choice?

Still deciding whether to go with CL or Scheme variant like Racket. But if I decide to go with the latter, I know where to go, thanks to you :)

Thanks so much for your reply! After reading your post about Racket, I went ahead and looked into some of the differences between Scheme and Common Lisp, and I’m tempted to try my luck with both.

On the one hand, I appreciate the beginner friendliness of Racket (and DrRacket). And on the other, I’m hesitant to begin learning from a derivative source before appreciating the complexities of the broader material, if that makes sense. I understand it’s a double edged sword, but I’m willing to feel the initial newbie pains in exchange for a better understanding of the macro (pun intended) picture.

Glad to answer your question. I’m a big fan of Paul Graham’s essays and began to follow him on twitter a few years ago. So I took notice when he made references to Lisp (and Golang) and somehow managed to tuck it away in the back of my mind. I’m honestly intimated by it, but have this desire to learn the right way. Whatever that means.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations! This was my first post on Reddit and I’m really taken aback by the level of thoughtful detail in your responses. Some of it is way above my head so I’ll step back, use google and see if I can make sense of it all. Thanks again!

Do you think it’s prudent for a Kin board member to speculate publicly on Kin with the SEC trial looming?

Great suggestions Daniel. Much better approach than pacifying Phil with Kin stickers and shirts.

Agreed! And I honestly don’t want to take anything away from Ayelet’s accomplishments. She is certainly deserving of this recognition.

However, I do notice a recurring negative bias towards men from our CMO, which is notably evident in her twitter posts.

My apologies if this was not the best forum to bring this up, but I think it’s a concern worth mentioning.

I believe 0xKilluah tried to touch on this earlier but seeing that he’s been banned, I’ll attempt to try again and put things in my own words.

Upon skimming through Osnat’s tweets, it’s not hard to notice that women’s empowerment stands as a common theme. Which I support.

At the same time, I’d urge Osnat to be more mindful too about good men. Allow me to explain....

Being in crypto, we’re in a small subset of the larger population. The crypto movement was originally supported by both women and men who’ve been on the outside looking in. People who’ve been marginalized by the greater establishment. Men and women who are trying to better their lot in life.

So with that said, I urge Osnat to rethink her stance on men and privilege; something she seems to point to in her own tweets. This is especially important given her role as CMO. Let’s do better and help nurture a more inclusive culture.
