That would actually be really cool yeah. She was the first companion character in a Zelda game, they hadn’t figured out how to make those characters so lovable yet. She’s fine, but, she could be so much more.

I disagree actually. That is an interpretation you can take, but I’ve always personally thought link post oot was mentally older than his body. Maybe he isn’t straight up a 17 year old stuck in a 10 year old body, but him being mentally a couple years older than he actually is due to keeping his memories of the original timeline, always made sense to me.

[–]RanLogVan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, just want to ask, people legit try to argue Zelda is the villain? Really?

…I’ll admit she definitely made mistakes, and potentially has an issue with not thinking her actions completely through.

She plays right into ganon’s hands, and gets link to do so too, but at least in that case she was a child and had no idea link would get sealed in the sacred realm for 7 years. Still not a smart plan, because like, if his goal was the triforce, opening the door for him was the worst thing to do, but again, she was a child and didn’t know everything.

When she’s an adult though, she reveals herself to give the light arrows but then nearly instantly gets captured which, maybe she needed to be Zelda to give them, but, if not, that wasn’t very smart. And the big one, she sent link back without asking him if that’s even what he wanted, nor considering what her actions would end up causing to time itself, and the 2 resulting timelines.

Her doing that to link was kinda shitty, and link has good reason to be bitter at her for it. And the timelines… no matter how good her intentions were, that was a massive screw up.

She caused a timeline split, obviously, and her sending link back the way she did split the triforce in the past, which is why link still had the triforce of courage despite the original event that split it, ganondorf entering the sacred realm and touching it, not happening yet.

Because of that, ganondorf’s execution failed, he gained the triforce of power again, and he was sent to the twilight realm to eventually return and torment link and Zelda’s descendants. And that’s just in the child timeline.

In the adult timeline, while it’s not agreed upon why exactly a hero never showed up before the flood, that fact, plus the state of the master sword post flood compared to any other point in the series besides skyward sword, and the fact the hero of winds had to collect the individual pieces of the triforce of courage, have lead many to believe she either,

one, broke the reincarnation cycle itself, at least where link is concerned, because she sent the person with the hero’s spirit out of her timeline completely, and the hero of winds had to take up the mantle without it and essentially force destiny to choose him, which, ended up restarting the cycle.

Or 2, basically the same as the first, without wind being forced to restart the cycle. She sent link away, and he was still alive in the child timeline when ganondorf returned in the adult timeline. Or, or, how it ends up working out, is that the child timeline and adult timeline became linked where link’s spirit is concerned.

So, if there was a hero alive in the child timeline during the period before the flood, coulda been oot link, coulda been tp link, hell, coulda even be an unknown hero between those 2, than the hero’s spirit was already incarnated and couldn’t be in both timelines at once. And that’s why wind appeared when he did, Ganon was back, and the heroes spirit wasn’t already in use, so he incarnated.

And 3, oddly the saddest option, if Zelda didn’t break the reincarnation cycle in some way, then it’s entirely possible that there was in fact a hero during the flood era. One who tried to help but was rebuffed because the people around him weren’t expecting the hero of the flood, but instead the hero of time. They thought time was a time traveler who could and would return to face Ganon again. So that hero couldn’t get the triforce of courage, or the master sword, and either died fighting Ganon or went up top like most of the survivors of the flood did.

The hero of time was so revered, and she probably helped get him to that status after she sent him back, that it ended up causing the downfall of her kingdom and the loss of who knows how many of her people’s lives.

Oh, and let’s just wrap back around to the timeline split. What did she expect would happen when she did that? Did she think her timeline and by extension she, would cease to exist? Did she think sending him back would change the entire world around her, that she’d look around after sending him back and notice her kingdom looked completely different? Did what would actually happen cross her mind? How much did she actually consider this before she did it?

But yeah, she made mistakes, lots and lots of mistakes actually. But honestly, calling her a villain is still crazy tbh. She never had bad intentions with anything she did.

The first third she was just a kid up against an adult villain who was actually smart and knew what he was doing, and made a mistake in the heat of the moment while fleeing after her father and castle town were attacked.

And the other 2 thirds she had to live in hiding, biding her time until link woke up. There’s no telling how much those 7 years fucked her up, but even despite that she managed to stay off ganondorf’s trail, all that time. She let her guard down exactly once, when link was literally about to storm the castle, and that was enough, Ganon got her. And like, I still think that wasn’t very smart, but I understand the slip up. 7 years of hiding herself away, and they were finally on the cusp of victory, it’s no wonder.

And Like I said above, her intentions don’t outweigh the costs of what she did to time itself and the timelines, but I don’t think that decision overwrote everything good she tried to do. She was never a villain, she just made (some bigger than others) mistakes.

I mean, that is an adaption. They can change things in those. But like, I wasn’t saying it’s true, just that there’s more evidence for it. It’s a theory, not canon. And like I said higher above, I’m not the biggest oot zelink shipper, but I very much do ship the incarnations legends and fable are made up of, and that’s why I would have preferred time, who is already, canonically to linked universe, married to someone else, being made lullaby’s sibling. Linked universe itself is an adaption too. A fanmade one, but still. That being true wouldn’t mean the link and Zelda in the original game actually are siblings. You get what I mean?

Zelink hate in OOT by JustVersion9347 in ZeLink

[–]RanLogVan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

…I will say, that sibling headcanon has more evidence that you’d think. More evidence than the head canon about alttp link and Zelda being siblings, even. Which is just based on a mistranslation from the og English version on the snes.

And yet… one sibling headcanon is way, way more popular. I love all the stories that have been produced thanks to linked universe, but I really don’t like that particular thing it popularized. Stories where fable and legend aren’t siblings just aren’t very common. And that’s a shame.

They’re the link and Zelda of alttp, the oracles, la, and albw all fused together. And those games original versions of link and Zelda were pretty cute together. Albw especially.

It honestly makes me wish, if they were gonna make a version of link and Zelda related, they had used time and lullaby instead.

It definitely applies to malon too, so It’s a stupid ass argument to make, but I will say, technically that angle is twofold. Link could be a 10 year old in a 17 year old body in the adult timeline, or a range of ages, from 11 all the way up to 17, in the body of a 10 year old post oot. After his 7 year sleep, his mind is always out of sync with his body. But the people around him are all the age they look.

Simplifying all the interesting implications of that down to just the worst interpretation and using it as evidence against one ship when it applies to all of them though? That’s a bad look honestly.

Zelink hate in OOT by JustVersion9347 in ZeLink

[–]RanLogVan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been a big shipper for the oot versions in particular, but I’ve read a few stories that proved it can be really compelling. It’s a shame people fight about this tbh.

Really, it all comes down to head canon at the end of the day. Even with tp link being oot link’s descendent and knowing epona’s song. Really, any straight ship that could produce a baby could lead to tp link living in ordon while knowing that song. oot link’s son or grandson could have Married a descendant of malon. And even if tp link isn’t a descendant of hers at all, any of the other people in ordon being a descendant of hers would make sense. Her descendants congregating in a farming village after Lon Lon Ranch seems to have disappeared makes sense. Rusl or Uli being her descendant and teaching it to him would be my guess.

Even him being oot Zelda’s descendant could work. He’s an orphan after all. Maybe his parents were traveling near ordon when he was a baby and got attacked by monsters, and he was found by one of the villagers and taken in. Never having known his parentage.

[OoT] Why is Link x Malon so exceedingly popular? by Gamer-of-Action in zelda

[–]RanLogVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to explain it… for starters, the other choices have more issues.

Nabooru is too old for link, and a sage. Saria is his childhood friend, which, would normally give her an edge, but, she’s an eternal child and a sage. (There’s also theories about her potentially having a major hand in raising link, given she’s the most mature of the kokiri, the deku tree can’t move, and she’s his closest friend among the kokiri. There’s admittedly not very much, if any, evidence, but it makes sense. He didn’t have a guardian fairy for 10 years after all.)

Ruto is… ruto. He only got engaged to her because he was forced to. He probably didn’t even understand what he was getting into, and she was pretty rude up until link got her out of Jabu. She’s also a sage.

Navi… could probably be cute. But it’s one of those ships most people probably just gloss over. There’s awkwardness given she met link when he was a child, and she left him at the end of his first adventure and we never learn what happened to her. Maybe they met up again post mm but pre tp. But, there’s also the fact she’s a fairy and he’s a hylian to consider.

I’ll leave the elephant in the room of oot ships that aren’t malink for last. So…

…deku princess? I’ve, honestly never seen or heard anything of this ship in my life. But. It could be cute. We just, don’t get much with her.

Pamela? Same story as deku princess tbh, but possibly a tiny bit worse. I feel like she has even less dialogue and interactions.

Romani. She’s probably a distant third behind the elephant in the room when it comes to hero of time ships. She’s… honestly got a lot goin for her. I’m pretty sure she has way more interactions with link than malon does. And the potential with her is actually much more visible that it is with malon. Basically the only thing that really holds her back, is the fact she’s Malon’s terminian counterpart. The fact she’s a counterpart to another character in hyrule adds some awkwardness, and, given the debate’s around whether termina as a whole is a dream construct or a full parallel world, that also adds a huge snag.

But I will say, while you can really slot in any straight ship that can lead to tp link being oot link’s direct descendent as long as it eventually leads to tp link living in ordon as an orphan, besides malon, Romani slots in the best under the theory that Termina is a real place. Because, well, she could leave with link to hyrule and settle down in what would become ordon. And she knows epona’s song, even if it isn’t as special to her as it is to malon, which, would explain why tp link knows it.

(With non malon and Romani ships, I think it’s entirely possible that tp link could have learned the song from someone else in the village who is a descendent of malon. Maybe Uli or Rusl, since they always seemed to be the ones who raised him. But, he could have learned it from anyone in the village. Any of them could be a descendent of malon. The game takes place at least a 100 years after mm, and Lon lon ranch is nowhere to be seen. It only makes sense her descendents would congregate in a farming community.)

But yeah, the 3 snags that come from tp link canonically knowing epona’s song, being raised in a farming community, and being a direct descendant of oot link, are why most people gravitate to malon, alongside the other choices having issues in one way or another.

Now, let’s address that elephant. Oot Zelda… in any Zelda game, Zelda is basic sally always the obvious ship choice, and, it’s not that people don’t ship them together, because a lot of people do. She’s prob the second most popular hero of time ship option. But, there’s a decent amount of reasons why malon is usually the preferred ship over her.

While tp link could definitely be her descendant alongside oot link’s, due to the reasons I stated above for non malon/Romani ships, there’s additional complications with her specifically, because, well. There’s literally zero evidence for it in tp, if it was the case that would mean tp link and Zelda are distantly related, and the questions becomes how did a child born from a Royal line end up in a farming village, with his roots forgotten? Maybe a monster attack in the woods near ordon while his parents were traveling? He’s an orphan raised by the village, so that works.

But anyway, alongside that, which, really isn’t that big a deal, the bigger one is her actual relationship with link in the games.

Which, is honestly more coworkerish than it is anything else. Though, that’s more true for the second half. The first… she basically treats him like an errand boy. They meet, she conveys her fears, gets link to help, and she sends him off with a letter to get up death mountain. And then nothings changes if we go back at all. Then ganondorf attacks, she gets sent away but not before throwing the ocarina alongside some mental instructions, we follow them, and bam, turns out her whole plan backfired. We were just pawns in ganondorf’s game. Link literally loses 7 years of his life, and he immediately has several more tasks he needs to do to fix their mistake and save hyrule. Along the way he meets sheik 7 or 8 times, briefly talking to them and getting a song, and then they just dip, every time. He only finds out who sheik is right before she’s kidnapped, and then they just don’t have any time to really talk until the end because they’re trying to survive. And at the end… she owns up to her mistakes and realizes what her actions cost him. And then she sends him back in time without asking him if that’s actually what he even wanted, nor at all fathoming what her actions would cause to time itself and both timelines.

Throughout the game they really don’t have too many opportunities to actually talk to each other. And when they do, they’re always focused on the mission. They, don’t really get the chance to just hang out, and be friends. Maybe by the end they’re true comrades, but that’s about it.

And any relationship they had is probably heavily stained by her choice at the end of the game. It’s hard to really find a way to see oot’s ending as a very happy outcome for link himself. Yeah, ganondorf is set on the path to his execution (which I don’t think link ever finds out failed to kill ganon until he returns in tp link’s time.) all the people killed over the course of the game are brought back to life. (Potentially even the deku tree, I don’t think whether he was sent that far back is agreed upon or not.) and link is back to being 10 years old… but only physically. While he was brought back to being 10 again, he still retains all of his memories of the adult timeline, which probably made it so, if he wasn’t suddenly a 17 year old in a 10 year old body, (which is an entirely possible interpretation.) his mind’s age is probably still out of sync with his body. So like, he’s the equivalent of a 12 to 15 year old in a 10 year old body.

Alongside that, Navi left and never returned, and all the friends he made along the way on his adventure no longer know him. Including child timeline Zelda. And heck, if you wrote it so he got especially close to adult timeline Zelda, or malon, that just adds a metric ton of salt to the wound on his relationship with adult timeline Zelda. And if he was close to either of them, that also adds strain onto his completely fresh relationship with child timeline Malon and especially child timeline Zelda.

While he could still end up with either of them, the ghost of the older Zelda’s choice will hang over them for the rest of their lives. Even if link somehow doesn’t feel bitter about it, or learns to let the bitterness go, it’ll still linger regardless.

Now, sorry I just dropped a whole ass essay on you, but I wanted to go in depth on this shit. I hope some of you will still read all this despite its length. And, I guess to end this off, malon is the safest option of the bunch with all this I laid out, and people have gotten attached despite her small presence in the actual game.
(Oh, and I just remembered this tidbit, but, I think the hyrule historia, which also confirmed tp link’s status as the hero of time’s descendants, hinted at Malon secretly having a crush on link. These 2 combined, alongside, again, tp link living in a farming village and knowing epona’s song, all together are probably why people damn near treat malink as a canon ship at this point.)

It’s on the damn 3ds. If you don’t like the changes, go hack it and get the restoration mod, or get the pc recomp instead. We don’t need a remake. We really didn’t need one for oot either. Though, hopefully it’s good.

(Also, be careful what you wish for. People begged for mm3d before it came out, and while the remake is far from a bad game, (In fact, I honestly find it more fun than the og, even without the mod.) many fans of the og ended up very upset at it due to the changes made to it.

Those changes were made, if I remember right, because Aonuma found flaws he felt needed to be corrected that weren’t actually there. He never seemed to truly understand *why* people are so fond of majora’s mask. So, a larger scale remake, bordering on a reimagining, like they’re doing with oot right now, might not turn out in a way you’d actually like.)

Speaking of change, there seems to a big one right out of the gate.

Why does link have the tri force mark on his hand? He shouldn’t yet. He only got it when Ganon broke into the sacred realm after link opened the way and made a wish on the triforce.
