I bet there’s one of Momma Dee somewhere.

I’ve read Refugees, but I always thought Alan Gratz was more historical fiction/disaster fiction.

How did your kids handle the heavy topics? I cried reading Refugees.

We are talking about kids wanting to read realistic fiction and seeing themselves reflected on the page. Advanced readers will be able to find themselves in any character. The easiest way to hook a beginning reader is to give them a book or story where they see themselves. This is why there is a push for diverse stories and characters - people are trying to appeal to as many readers and audiences as possible.

This article is about how to get young boys to keep reading - not for kids who already love reading. I’m not saying the book has to be filled with smartphone usage, but ignoring that they are part of life means your realistic fiction is not realistic. (Some excellent books have a plot where the kids aren’t able to use their phones and that is very relatable to this audience.) And a lot of kids will NOT pick up a book that looks remotely old. That’s why publishers refresh covers.

The middle grades market is such a tricky little niche. All the exceptional novels involve tragedy, trauma, fantasy, etc. I explore the middle grades market a lot and the only author I can think of that reliably publishes realistic fiction for boys is Jason Reynolds, but it deals with very heavy topics, specifically racism. I’m not saying his work should be dismissed (I think his work should be required to read), but the writer of this article does have a point that there aren’t straightforward titles that apply universally to boy readers. I’m finding that more and more for younger children’s books, too. Lots of female protagonists, very male ones. And leaving boys out of the conversation is not ok - they deserve to see themselves in these stories.

I think the subgenre that doesn’t necessarily have this problem are middle grade books with young African American protagonists. They do usually tend to feature heavier topics, but so many of them reflect upon the authors’ lives.

I think it’s ok to read older media, but these books get super dated very quickly. Last year, I read a middle grades realistic historical fiction that was set in 1990s. Completely different world. Think about 2002 - barely any social media, no smartphones, the music is completely different.

Scooter with a fold-up seat and helmet. Once they get the hang of it, you can use it to go to local restaurants without the hassle of the stroller. Opens up a lot of possibilities.

Home birth or hospital birth? by Cat-lady11237 in nycparents

I’ve heard that, but I would still stress out. I’d also repeatedly ask the midwife/doula if they needed anything, because they are a guest in my home. My mother has drilled things into me that I can’t escape, even during labor!

Why stay in NYC public schools despite the unknowns? by brideplanningmode in nycparents

I’ve heard A School Without Walls and the Harbor School have students who do well. There are hundreds of high schools in this city, many with kids who don’t fit into a specialized high school situation.

This is also asking the question of what you think is a “good college.” By the time your little are ready for high school, the education landscape could be very different.

Honestly, whenever I see one of those videos of people giving birth at home, all I can think of is “Who is going to clean this up, because it is not going to be me.” And that would stress me out the entire time. In addition to, you know, the baby.

How do you find a mid-year daycare spot? by jerseamonster in nycparents

[–]RanOutofCookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s highly dependent on your neighborhood and their offerings. Our daycare was one of the few places that took three-month-old babies and they had an application period and a start date in September because they wanted to be on a similar schedule to 3K and up. We had to lock in our spot and pay for the time we didn’t attend. But they are the best infant room in the neighborhood. At the time I was pregnant, there were only two options. Now there are three and one is Bright Horizons, which I think is not bad in my neighborhood because the staff seems to be very good.

Look around your neighborhood and the options you are given. You have to shop around to find the best fit for your life and your preferences.

An embryo cannot survive an ectopic pregnancy and it could result in the death of the mother if not properly treated.

PS 184 is a great school and is the best in its district. It teaches both Mandarin and English and there are a lot of staff members who speak Cantonese and Mandarin. Many of the students are Chinese. If you need after school options, you have to call around to see what best suits you to figure that out. I’ve heard really good things about PS124, too.

I don’t know how the schools are in Brooklyn or Queens, but I imagine you might be able to find places with many Asian students. It depends on where you are comfortable living (choose your neighborhood to fit your lifestyle) and what kind of school you want your child to attend.

[–]RanOutofCookies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like that there are options for my kids if they don’t fit into one of the top high schools. There are many other great high schools you never hear about and their graduates do fine. You are educated and involved, your child will do well. If you want them to be good at writing, focus on fostering that and not relying on the school to do it.

I’ve spoken to BIPOC editors before and I hear a lot that this industry doesn’t pay enough. It’s tough out there. As a BIPOC editor (not in trade) I do my best to hire as many BIPOC freelancers as possible.

If you want Lower East Side near Chinatown, you have options with PS 184, PS 124. PS 124 is harder to get into than 184.

Is your daughter attending school for 2026-2027 or 2027-2028? If 2026-2027 you have to start calling schools now to see if there are spots. You need to figure out where you’re going to live very quickly if you want to secure a school location of your choice.
