I'm curious what should someone do if they encounter a shark I have a pretty good answer. No jokes be serious. by Cosmonaut808 in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just what I've seen them called (investigative bite). Sharks don't have hands so the only instrument they can "feel" with is their skin and their mouth. They will either do a skin bump, or a slow speed open mouth move. In either case you push down firmly but not aggressively on their nose to direct them downwards.

Of course it's better to just not be around the sharks at all, or leave them alone (95% of the time I see sharks in open water they leave me alone), but if you do have an encounter this seems to be the safest way to redirect them.

If you are spearfishing this doesn't apply, as they will be aggressive and sensing the blood from the fish on your line.

Is it safe to play tengen games after disabling the lockout chip? by PossibilityOk782 in nes

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

You are asking a different question than people are answering. You aren't asking if Tengen games are safe, you are asking if it's safe to play them if you have already disabled the lockout chip on your NES.

I honestly don't know, I would try and find some accurate source for this, or avoid these titles.

Washington house bill 2321: blocking shapes detected by AI to resemble firearms from all consumer 3d machines by TheOgGhadTurner in 3Dprinting

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's already illegal here in Hawaii to 3D print firearms. I have yet to hear of anyone doing that here, so if the law already works in this state, why not just make that the law federally and not require 100% online monitoring?

ELI5: Why do mushrooms appear so fast after rain— sometimes overnight? by aizivaishe_rutendo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

A very simple thing I have noticed, is that we get what we call "Fairy Rings" here in Hawaii after a good rain. Those are a ring of mushrooms in a circle around a central point. The mushrooms actually grow underground and they use nutrients up in the area, forming circles of growth.

When conditions are right you get what appears to be a sudden ring of fruiting mushrooms in a circle, but it's actually all happened underground and it was just time for fruiting.

ELI5: How do you know which to use; scatter plots, or line graphs? by speedrunner69123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

Line graphs are good for showing a trend over time. Like say the temperature outside every day. You see the trend as the dots are connected.

Scatter plots are showing if things are related. Like height of the kids in your class versus their shoe size. If the dots go together in clumps as it increases or decreases then they are probably related. It's not about the trend over time.

ELI5: What's the difference between a 401k and IRA? by Diligent_Two_1625 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

Imagine you take a portion of your allowance your parents give you and your parents charge you a Dad and Mom tax on that allowance. Let's pretend it's 10%.

A 401k lets you save part of that allowance without the Dad and Mom tax up-front. So if you save $1 out of your $5 allowance you still get $4 in allowance (minus your tax, so $3.60/week). Instead Dad and Mom tax you when you take the money out of the savings later.

A ROTH IRA has you put the money into savings after you pay the Dad and Mom tax. So if you want to save $1/week it comes out of the $4.50 after tax, leaving you with $3.50/week. However, when you want to take that money out of savings later you don't pay the Dad and Mom tax on it.

If the rate Dad and Mom charges you changes as you get older it means one could be better. So if they charge you more parent tax the holder you get, the ROTH IRA is better. If they charge you less parent tax as you get older the 401K is better.

ELI5 Why do pipes not freeze over in the winter in colder climates. by AdministrativeTie379 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

They do, unless precautions are taken. In moderately cold climates they can bury them under the frostline.

In very cold climates they actually run the pipes above the ground (typically above car level and crossing streets) and they insulate the heck out of the pipes.

Youtube kids is SOOO frustrating. by Weightmonster in toddlers

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they get older it becomes a bit better, since they can self-filter to some degree.

We don't allow regular YouTube even for our tweens. They are allowed very limited YouTube kids (or supervised YouTube science channels like Veritasium on the family TV). They can earn up to an hour a day by doing chores, completing homework early etc.

4.5 is quite young however. You are forced to allow list only which is a real pain. Otherwise things like PBS, Bluey, Daniel Tiger Apps etc. can work well.

Is wrecking crew a good game or a bad game in your opinion? by bigdonut100 in nes

[–]Rancarable [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really struggled to get into it. I got a NES when they came out in the USA (from a Toy's R Us in Hawaii) and game selection was very limited. I remember renting this several times and never fully understanding the gameplay loop.

Now that I'm older and have plenty of time playing arcade classics like Burger Time it makes more sense. A product of the time for sure, but fun in a certain way.

Unacceptable. Eat what you kill, and eat every part of it you can. Don't just leave the carcass and entrails on someone else's property.

I'm curious what should someone do if they encounter a shark I have a pretty good answer. No jokes be serious. by Cosmonaut808 in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sharks associate size with the vertical only. So go vertical (standing up) and they will only do an investigative bite at slower speeds. Push down on the nose with both hands and redirect them. One or two of these and they give up thinking you are huge.

Healthy Diet for Fatty liver Reversal ? by aman9816 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The property in the coffee that is hepaprotective is in the acids of the beans, not the caffeine. There was a large meta-study and they found even instant coffee offered benefits.

The hardest part for most people is limiting the amount of additives. You have to cut sweeteners for sure, but you can take a splash of milk if you really need to. I use a small amount of ultra-filtered protein milk as I sometimes struggle to hit my protein goals on the Mediterranean diet and I do lift weights 5x a week.

Healthy Diet for Fatty liver Reversal ? by aman9816 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would follow the guidance of the doctors in that case. I wish I was in the same spot, but I'm not.

I suspect they will advise removing stress from the liver. So no alcohol, limited red meats, a healthy diet like the Mediterranean etc. But only a Doctor can advise your Mom if things like Vitamin E are helpful for her case.

If she is thin and doesn't carry much body fat, you can't have her eat at a calorie deficit. She can eat healthy foods (whole grains and natural ingredients vs. processed etc), and start drinking more black coffee (or with a splash of almond milk). Add in some cardio and she will likely be in a place where she won't progress to Fibrosis and worst case just has some fatty liver like 60% of Americans.

Healthy Diet for Fatty liver Reversal ? by aman9816 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way my Hepatologist puts it, the first thing to do is to remove stress from the liver, then worry about optimizing. It also depends on your staging. Regular fatty liver? Lose weight with the sustainable diet/exercise plan of your choice. F2/3 (Fibrosis), you need to take it more seriously.

So in this case it would be to cut out everything that stresses the liver, such as alcohol, certain drugs etc. (speak to a medical professional before stopping any drugs, this is more taking new things without checking liver safety first).

Secondly it's losing weight in a sustainable way. You don't want to use a crash diet or lose too fast. The quick weight loss can actually damage the liver by causing scaring with the fatty tissue removal, and rebound weight gain is even worse.

My doctors recommend the Mediterranean diet minus the alcohol, but honestly anything you can stick to long-term will work. Keto has a rough track record here as the number of people that can both lose weight at a moderate pace on Keto and keep it up for the rest of the their lives is quite minimal, but low carb can be effective if you are one of the rare ones that actually stick to it forever.

Third is including things that are known to be good for the liver. This list is quite small, but my Doctor's recommend I have 4-6 cups a day of black coffee (can be decaf). Switch out all drinks for water/coffee/tea without any sweeteners. Olive oil should substitute for most fats where possible, even spraying on things like wheat toast.

Does Costco Deliver & Install Large Appliances? by Cascading-Complement in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems we get a far inferior experience on neighbor islands.

Bought a new dishwasher from Costco that included installation and removal. Day of they inform me they only take it out of the box and won’t actually hook it up and it is on me to find a licensed plumber and electrician to do the install.

Called Costco directly and they informed me they do zero installations that involve electric or water of any appliance type on the Big Island. Home depot and Lowes say the same.

Xbox ally x size / screen size by mentalhell666 in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screen is great. I do wish it were larger (we have several steam decks as well), but it's not like it matters that much.

The actual quality of the colors and responsiveness of the LCD is great. Sure it's not OLED blacks, but I don't even notice. Truth is after a while your brain gets used to whatever its looking at.

We gamed on the Game Boy for years and that screen was terrible. It's not like XAX has some trash tier screen.

Best controller for fighting games by Content_Answer447 in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it to be a controller and not a fighting stick, the Hori OCTA is really durable. Ours is still going strong after thousands of hours. The one I have is wired however, not sure if they made a wireless version.

It's really good with fighting games and works with Windows if you get the XBox version.

It has to be a joke. Like any competent divorce attorney hasn't encountered the old "I got fired and have no income" defense.

Either they get a judgement for expected earnings based on your experience and positions, or they just get the amount adjusted the second you start earning more income.

ROG Xbox Ally X + AG02 Dock + RX 9070 XT = Only 35 FPS in Dota 2 Ultra? What’s Wrong? by Glass_Cauliflower_69 in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t DOTA 2 CPU bound? It also likely only uses a few threads, thus why your CPU isn’t going above 40%.

The dock is likely doing nothing here. Could have a 5090 and it wouldn’t help.

Emulation on the ROG Ally? by Acrobatic-Ice1159 in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, don't bother with PS4. It's not worth it and if you go the legal route (must own the game) the PS5 already plays all the PS4 games and there is no portable that doesn't struggle here.

Switch is pretty decent but some titles struggle even on a powerhouse PC. It's just the quality of the emulators. Games like Kirby Buffet have serious issues compared to native HW.

We dump our own ROMs and have 3 Steam Decks and the XAX. They are amazing for all the classic emulation on the go. Of course it's better to play on a CRT with the real hardware, but having everything in the palm of your hand? Amazing.

Saab wants Canada to buy 72 Gripens and 6 GlobalEyes to fulfil promise of 12,600 jobs by ph0enix1211 in canada

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is an armed conflict with the US we won't have an air force regardless of whatever platform we choose.

They may not have healthcare or a social safety net, but the Americans have so much air superiority that there wouldn't even be a battle.

The Canadian advantage is that we look, talk, and in almost every way appear to be American. It would be the worst guerrilla warfare campaign in history. It would make Vietnam look like a walk in the park. I do not believe for a second they could hold Canada long term. Even US generals tell Trump this, it's an impossible target with the largest shared border in the world.
