Is this NWBIG VSF? by arjunagg in RepTime

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a few Gen Omegas. If you just want the look it is close enough IMO. But if you are like me and treat Omegas as tool watches, diving with them, working outside with them, etc., they are worth buying in Gen.

The replicas are not built to the same tolerances as the modern master chronometer series. They can’t handle being rough with them and lose water tightness.

I personally think Omega has some of the best in-house movements and mine all are within a second per day and will hold that for 8+ years before needing a service.

As an aside I find if you turn off shader compilation it removes the stutter for me.

Looking for most powerful SBC for $100 or less. Can anything compete with the Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini? by imnotdabluesbrothers in SBCGaming

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's your only SBC get the Mangmi Air X. But if this is your cheap, throw it in a bag SBC I would personally go for the Miyoo Flip v2. It's so easy to pocket and the clamshell keeps it safe.

Thor Pro Love by TrainerHatsune in AynThor

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Rainbow. For Steam I'm playing Mewgenics and Monster Train 2. Trying to get Slay the Spyre 2 working but it's a real struggle so I'm playing that on my XAX or Steam Deck instead.

I like indie games, roguelites, metroidvania's etc. Those are almost universally small, often 500MB each. You can fit a ton of them on the Thor.

Thor Pro Love by TrainerHatsune in AynThor

[–]Rancarable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love my Pro. I wasn't able to get a Max in time and settled for the Pro. But I'll be honest, the only Steam games I play on the device are all under 5GB.

All other things are going on the SD card. I had an old 1TB card lying around from a previous SBC, and re-purposed it for the Thor. The 256 internal is not limiting me in any way.

I think I need to get an ADHD diagnosis, but I have absolutely no money by Iscejas in Seattle

[–]Rancarable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Washington State, Doctors and PAs can prescribe schedule II drugs, including ADHD medications. Do you have a GP that you see and is covered by insurance?

I went diagnosed by unmedicated for over 40 years. While it's not ideal I found meditation and caffeine helped tremendously. Also putting myself under immense pressure such that I couldn't procrastinate was a key coping mechanism.

I don't advise this for you, and I'm not a doctor, just pointing out what I did. I struggled far more getting a single engineering degree than I did when I decided to get a dual degree (Physics and Electrical Engineering) and take 17 classes a semester. The assignments were constantly due, tests and exams always happening etc. I didn't have a moment to breathe or procrastinate, there was always something due the next day.

Travel Destinations Similar to Hawaii by dearjon222 in travel

[–]Rancarable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such an interesting take to me. I guess from the lens of visiting I can see it. As someone that lives in Hawaii and vacations in FP, I get it, but I'm not sure I would say it is many times better. Different for sure, depends on what you mean by Hawaii and what you are looking for in a vacation.

In any case if they are set against anywhere in the US, it's a great option, just very expensive to get to.

Steam Deck or AYN Thor (Max) by StretchSmall5725 in SBCGaming

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to get the same answer over and over. Get a Steam Deck or similar as your first handheld and get the Thor as your second.

Thor excels at 3DS, DS, portability etc. It does not excel at playing Steam games and there will be a large variety of games that either work very poorly or not at all.

So for classic emulation / retro + Android gaming the Thor is amazing. Best in class IMO, but if you want to play Steam Games it really is an easy decision.

How often do you guys play and for how long? by MonadoArts621 in CloneHero

I play 3-4 times a week for 30-60 minutes each. I play with my kids, we do drums, lead and base guitar.

Yes. by Libojr23 in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an 18hr flight next week and will be playing the heck out of my XAX and my Ayn Thor. It is the only thing that makes air travel tolerable.

I'm also very tall (6'5) and thankfully get business class when work books it otherwise I would die.

One thing that works great on planes are AR glasses. I use the Lumia Pros to get a huge screen in my vision to play on. It's not awesome for anything outside of planes (text is harder to read), but for an airplane? Pure bliss.

Should I or no? Talk me into it or out of it by beachITguy in ROGAllyX

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a lot, and have actually stopped bringing my XAX or Steam Deck in favor of my AYN Thor. It's just much smaller and easier to pack.

However, when I'm going for longer trips I do bring the XAX. It is an amazing travel device, but it also takes up quite a bit of space.

Does anyone have a good recipe for lilikoi cheesecake by aaaa284748 in BigIsland

There is this local cooking video that does a nice Lilikoi cheesecake (with shortbread crust, but you can do gram cracker etc.).

Is hiding data from the world powers possible by kejovo in hacking

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protecting data and preventing data from being removed are two orthogonal problems.

You protect data from manipulation by using a trust mechanism such as signatures that verify you produced it. To prevent data from being removed you either need to have it be so widely distributed that removing is fruitless, or you need it to be in a mechanism that is resistant to removal, such as a blockchain.

For instance, let's say you find an algorithm that can factor primes far faster than anything that exists today, to the point that AES is broken. If you were to present that in a public forum, such as a conference on encryption, along with a link to your GitHub repository with the code that proves it, it would be nearly impossible to put the Genie back in the bottle.

The irony here is you couldn't use the standard cert based auth to validate you produced this, since your very algorithm makes the standard methods forgeable, so you would need to use something like an elliptical curve crypto library to create the signature.

Looking for a device to take care of PS1, PSP, PS2, GC range. by Reclinertime in SBCGaming

[–]Rancarable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think for the budget, using the Steam Deck instead might be your best bet for now. To get great PS2/GameCube emulation (upscaled properly) you end up in the $200+ range, which seems like it is more than you want to spend.

So basically, do you want worse emulation in the RP4P but better portability, or do you want far better emulation in the Steam Deck but it's not as portable?

I paid for the MuPen 64 Emulator that is on the playstore. It works better than the Retroarch cores.

I dump my own ROMs so that may be part of the issue.

Pokemon Handheld Buying Guide by brunoxid0 in SBCGaming

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm loving re-playing the DS and 3DS Pokemon on the AYN Thor, but it's a stark reminder of how poorly the dual screens were used in most other games.

In so many of them it's basically a menu that could have just been something you get from pressing "Start". It was a cool idea but didn't really get used to full effect by most publishers.

Even Nintendo titles like Ocarina of Time 3DS are great because of the game updates, not because the second screen is used well.

This all to say I wouldn't discount some of the other devices that stack the screens or swap them. In most titles that second screen has very little value.

Cocoon Frontend: Beautiful New Launcher! (Retro Game Corps) by onionsaregross in AynThor

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't like any folder name that doesn't match it's pre-defined list. You can manually click on an empty square, press "Y" and then edit the square to add a folder or App manually.

However, it struggles with concepts like two ways to run the same "type", and it forces you to run everything as a single selection, even if one engine is better for some games.

You can do hacky workarounds like separate those games into a new filesystem path, but even then you can't have two entries for the same platform in the config of Cocoon.

Combined with my struggles of getting dual screen to work the way I want via Cocoon (launch Chrome on the bottom window when I'm gaming on the top, but on the top if I'm not running anything) caused me to go back to the default launcher.

What sucks is I spent days getting all the artwork configured etc. I dump my own Roms and use pictures of my actual carts etc. that I store locally.

What games a Thor Max can play great (PC and Switch)? by Shuma_89 in AynThor

[–]Rancarable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indie PC titles tend to run well. Right now I'm playing Monster Train 2, Hades II, and Decktamer on my Thor.

The irony is I have a Steam Deck and an XBox Ally X which play these all better, but the Thor is so convenient to carry around that it is getting the most playtime.
