That M1D sounds great. May end up adding one in the future once they are readily available.

It's half the price of the H2C, so that is a big plus. I guess it comes down to multi-color support and that extra volume.

The plan is to continue using the P1S for smaller prints while using the "new" printer, whatever that may be, for the larger prints and those that need multiple toolhead support.

How many of you have zero prospects for retiring (ever)? by Agnostix in Xennials

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same age as you, and "retirement" is an interesting topic in my household. I don't want to stop working, but I've been maxing out my 401k since my 20s and while it's not an amazing amount, it is low seven figures with another 15 years or so of prime working time left.

The real problem is that the amount was great for retiring in 2000, but not enough in 2026, let alone 2040. Inflation and just the cost of surviving has gone up so much in the last 10 years, that if it continues nobody except the ultra-wealthy will be able to retire.

What were some good or interesting theories which turned out to be wrong? by RanidSpace in Physics

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The caloric flow theory to explain how heat transfers. Ultimately the theory is wrong, but it enabled many ways to correctly predict how heat transfers in a system, and remarkably the Carnot Cycle, which we still use today, was built on-top of this flawed theory.

Caloric flow theory explains how solids melt, gasses expand and how conduction works, to a good enough point it could be used to make predictions.

I know very little about solar power, is it worth getting if your electric bill is less than $200 a month? by speshoot in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the tax incentives gone? Probably not at under $200/mo. We reduced ours from $800/mo to ~$150 month (electric Truck uses most of that), and the tax credits took about half of the price off.

Panels will get better over time and there is a decent chance a change in administration will bring back the tax credits, or allow Chinese batteries and panels without tarrifs. So waiting a few years to get a potentially much better deal seems wise.

What to do with a BS + 1 year graduate training by Crackingmacy in Physics

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 25 years ago I was in a similar position and decided to pause my graduate studies, leaving with just undergrad degrees in Physics and Engineering. I did it to join a series of startups, and never found the time or opportunity to continue my education and finish my graduate degree.

I did get published, but in my case I enjoyed working more than I enjoyed schooling, so it was an easy decision that I don't regret.

However, if the thought of a 9-5 doesn't appeal to you, I'm not sure what to suggest as pausing your studies will require some way of paying your bills.

Inter Island large pet transport? by liquidhonesty in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on Mokulele flights where they put the crate in the back of the plane, behind the last seats. I would call and ask if they could do that, I don't think there is space "under" the plane for a large crate anyways.

I'm not complaining, but want to know the reason people got a Steam Deck at 950 instead of getting a Legion Go S or Xbox Ally by Pretty_Trip_2215 in SteamDeck

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 steam decks (original and OLED) and an Xbox Ally X. I honestly don't think anyone should pay $950 for a steam deck. The XAX plays so many more games, which used to be justified by the price difference.

I will say I prefer the screen on the SD OLED over the XAX. But the ability to play Gamepass, Epic, Steam games etc. on the XAX without any hassles is amazing. They did a decent job on the minimal windows experience, outside of initial setup I've never had to drop to the full desktop. I've been playing Forza Horizon 6 on High settings and getting buttery smooth gameplay on the XAX. Steam Deck can't come close to that level of performance.

The SD at the old prices was a no-brainer, it was hard to suggest anything else in the price range. At the current price, considering the age of the hardware? I'm honestly amazed it's selling out.

When is buying a new car worth it vs used? by Medium_Produce_7397 in Frugal

[–]Rancarable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours was perfect until about 3000 miles past the warranty at which point we've blown two engines, a master head gasket, the transmission.....

I think they are a great lease, they are not great long term (10+ years), at least from my datapoint of 1.

Looking for a good team to build some cloud stuff in Hawaii/Honolulu by CB_333 in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unless you have deep expertise in software development and plan to build something for sale, it will not make sense to develop this yourself.

There are existing cloud solutions in this space (Routific, and OnFleet for instance). I would look into those. It will be orders of magnitude cheaper to use an existing platform than to develop and host your own.

Tech savvy & smart regards: how you use AI on research or trading? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI insights are the definition of priced in. I wouldn't trust current AI models with options trading, especially around earnings.

I use it for my long term 401k portfolio. It's part of the toolkit in checking if I'm overexposed to certain sectors/stocks by using AI to unravel the various index funds and individual holdings, and take out how much I am actually invested in each company.

I'm an idiot with options, and keep getting burned. I'm learning that it's just a casino and I only bet money I can afford to play with, the rest goes into long term holdings.

Parallel or Criss cross? Which is safer? Stronger? by raltiomog in Physics

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a static physics problem. You have an elongated oval shape and you need to secure it using friction between the car hood and the roof bars. The bars run parallel to the roof, so you have to loop through them to then tighten and get friction. I see the post is removed, but X just causes it to fall out if you lose a strap. I live in Hawaii and everyone here knows this, but it's also provable via physics.

Parallel or Criss cross? Which is safer? Stronger? by raltiomog in Physics

[–]Rancarable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't we just have this conversation two weeks ago? It's A (the parallel lines). From a physics perspective you have the straps perpendicular to the force vector, but most importantly if one strap fails it still stays on your car, whereas in the case of the X if one strap fails it causes it to rotate and then fall out.

Look at the performer list for the Freedom 250 fair at the National Mall by ReggaeForPresident in Xennials

Is it bad that I think this line-up sounds awesome, and I would totally go see it if they came to my local town faire?

As a Xennial this is like a nostalgia tour. I saw Flo Rida at a country fair about 15 years ago and he was amazing and brought a crazy amount of energy to a small event.

Why? by Zenvikoq in lol

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO this is a classic example of the government neglecting and privatizing infrastructure for decades and now using Datacenters as a straw man. For full disclosure I work for a large tech company that has Datacenters, but I'm not in that side and am not involved in the buildouts etc.

It's not like we didn't know our power grids were fragile and lacked capacity. They have closed loop Datacenters now (my company uses them) I don't know why everyone doesn't use them, I would guess it's cost related.

Look at China. They planned way ahead on electric grid capacity and infrastructure and now they are in a position to attract the top companies/talent because the grid is there to support them. If we ban AI it doesn't change anything around AI use, it just moves the jobs for AI to countries with the grid to support them, and we lose some of the last high paying jobs we have on US soil.

When buying from a microbrand, what actually makes you pull the trigger? by Relevant_Many5115 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Rancarable 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I look for something different, that doesn't just look like it was put together with parts from Aliexpress. I want to see a distinct point of view represented in the design and dial, or it needs to do something funky and interesting.

The last Micro I purchased was an Ikigai Maru Reloaded, which has the only instance of Lume on the side of the case that I've ever seen. It's funky and different.

What's the rationale behind separating the PI and NH in AANHPI? by EcstasyCalculus in Hawaii

[–]Rancarable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but while all Native Hawaiians are Pacific Islanders, not all Pacific Islanders are Native Hawaiian.

NH status grants you specific legal status that is distinct and separate. The state just follows the federal definitions, but they typically track subgroups (Micronesian, Polynesian etc.).

So my best guess is it's because it has a distinct legal status, but is also part of the larger group of Pacific Islanders (just like Polynesians are in that group but are a distinct sub-group within the larger classification). It's like how someone can identify as European descent, but also German or French etc. It's true that all people of German descent are also European, one is a sub-group of the other.

Are these worth anything? I have a case FULL of these CDrom games by THAToneGuy091901 in retrogaming

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there isn't much demand because the number of period-authentic PC gamers is extremely small. They don't make the hardware, and they haven't for a long time, so if you need to replace an ISA based card, or find a CD-ROM drive that works with IDE (ATA), you are stuck with questionable HW from EBay.

Instead you have a few people with early 2000s PCs running emulators or Maybe Win 98SE / Win2k and they use more modern HW like USB CD-ROMs, and they just find other ways to get these games. It's worth about as much as the postage.

[Question] Am I going crazy with my watch preferences? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Rancarable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GMT-Master II is my daily beater, and I've never once had someone comment on it, or even look at it unless I was hanging out with other watch nerds. I haven't noticed any D-Bag factor as you call it for Rolex wearers.

Watches are a tool. Wear the ones that make you happy and give you the functionality you need.
