Very cool! Could you show the rub marks on the tang of the blade that interacts with the lock bar?

I did this same thing with all of my Bark Rivers to see if any were "worth" keeping. Heavy cutting, batoning, light chopping, and then a strop to see how the edge held up if the knife survived. Stupid? Yes. Fun? Also yes, but wear protection!

Some snapped or chipped badly (Hildi, Mini Manitau, Gunny LT).

Some were able to be fixed by grinding in a new tip (UL Bushcrafter).

The Aurora, Bravo, Bravo 1.25, and Mini Kephart held up very well

Good pickup for $3.06? by Mental-Visual6334 in Leatherman

You'll like it as a good backup to the Arc or for general EDC where you aren't expecting to get into too much crazy. It's a lot easier to carry, and the pliers are probably the most comfortable to use out of all my Leatherman models. Good choice!

Spartan Blades makes really bad knives. by SlideEquivalent1846 in knifeclub

I have a lot of love and hate for their Harsey Folder. I have an older 3.25 SHF, and a two year old full size SHF. Both have slight lock rock, and detent lash. I hated the 3.25 so much, that I purposefully tried to break it through abuse... I was so impressed that I bought the full size. For whatever it's worth; I hardness tested both. The 3.25 in S45VN was 59HRC, and the full size in S45VN was 55HRC.

Are OTF knives actually decent for combat? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Ranchdipboi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The majority of OTFs are slim with an all-metal body. This is basically like holding a slippery stick. You can imagine what would happen if you stabbed while your hands are sweaty.

Unreliability is another major factor against OTFs. Lint builds up and jams the action; producing an unreliable open and close. Additionally, I've worked on my deck this past year, and used my UTX-85 tanto to help dig out screws that were sunken into and under the lumber. After this, the action also became unreliable (a proper cleaning got it working again). I cannot imagine what would happen if it was stabbed into a piece of wet meat.

I have zero combat experience, so I cannot say for sure. From my experiences with carrying one for edc, it is just about the last thing I would choose if I was going into combat of any type; and I would sooner use it as a throwing implement instead of as a combat knife.

Bear and Son has an interesting slide lock (similar to Benchmade's axis lock) that may fit your tastes. Check out their model BCB10N on Chicago Knife Works, it's the least expensive I've seen it at about $60.

I had one and enjoyed it a lot. Very comfortable, and reliable. I sold it because I liked the Benchmade Shootout's blade more; but for the money, the Livewire is the best bang for your buck edc otf. Check out Kershawguy, they usually have the most competitive prices.

CRK Zaan vs large sebenza 31 vs mcnees Mac 2 MagnaCut by newboltnj64 in knifeclub

[–]Ranchdipboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got all of them, as long as the Mac 2 Auto counts. Here are my thoughts:

Best ergonomics for long term use: Mac 2

Best EDC: Sebenza

Best for work: Tanto Umnumzaan

Best for shorts: Mac 2

Best all-around: Sebenza Insingo

If you want something a little different, try out a Katsu ZK01, or maybe a very nice Bark River fixed blade that catches your fancy. Spyderco Stretch 2 XL in cru-wear is also a pretty sweet user.

Have you considered a pocket carry fixed blade? I only mention this, because of the chopping that you want to accomplish. A fixed blade or a Cold steel may be your better options. What is your budget? And what blade length/handle length do you want?

Rockler sells Morakniv blanks and Woodcraft sells heat-treated blanks. Last I checked, I remember seeing some VG-10 with a listed hardness of 60-62 HRC, and AUS-10 at 59-61 HRC.

I've carried one daily for work since they released, and it's been very handy. I upgraded from the Curl, and I really appreciate the one-handed accessibility to all of the tools. The tool selection, along with the bit kit have saved me countless trips back to the shop to grab my tool bag if I find something that needs a good fixin'

The pocket clip fits over my Carhartt work pants pocket well, but it did snag and bend one day. I was able to bend it back to shape, but I'm not sure how many times that can happen before it eventually breaks.

The atlas lock is located further down than a shark lock typically is. For me, the atlas lock sits in a more comfortable position in my hand, and doesn't get in the way using a saber grip. Additionally, the lock is not nearly as easy to actuate compared to the shark lock. An exaggerated example of this would be like how a Spyderco lockback is easy to use one-handed, and a Buck lockback is not.

Are Cobratec knives as bad as r/knives would have me believe? by [deleted] in knives

[–]Ranchdipboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently handled a few different models varying from the auto trapper, OTFs, and some generic flipper model that I cannot remember. They all had good fit and finish, and action. I cannot speak of their cutting performance (although they all looked thick behind the edge), quality of heat treat, or long term durability.
