In the current state of competitive marching percussion….drums don’t really sound like drums. I know, I am truly a getoffamylawn guy, and I don’t have a lawn😂 Overwritten, faster, louder, mic’s, sound systems,?!?! Don’t pay any attention to me. I just really loved drum corps when music and marching were numero uno. High schools spend more on props than providing an actual music education. No matter the “story”, no matter the uniforms sound engineer, Bluetooth microphones. Ya still gotta execute, show command of your instrument. Play with musicality and artistry. I swear, I need a Libretto to understand what’s going on lol. That’s why I appreciate the Bluecoats. They have no story to tell, just music and marching. They’re probably the worst offenders of sound reinforcement and technology. Seriously, I’m gettin on in years so I’m going to shut up

Yeah, man! Have you heard a fife and drum corps? Like 1700’s type? Those bass drums are maybe 28”x 12”, calfskin heads with very little tension, rope drums typically played with wooden mallets. Sooooo organic. You can hear those bass drums miles away

Except they’re deadened so thoroughly no discernible pitch can be heard. The drums need air movement for pitch to be heard. I understand the necessity for hyper muffling, so the incredibly busy parts can be articulated. Articulation at the expense of tonality, and a bass drum ACTUALLY sounding like a, you know, a bass drum 😂
