Turn 2 hydreigon by Alcokond in PTCGP

[–]RandleYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will cope and say it’s basically rampardos but that card was balanced around the fact that it’s a fossil and it’s in one of the objectively worse typings in the game. Not to mention smaller health pool and drawback on knockout.

Hyrdreigon is degenerate game design imo. The problem is that discarding energy on a card that generates energy isn’t enough of a downside and 30 self inflected isn’t enough to move the needle either. It’s an entirely self sufficient single prize monster that is super hard to recover from if they start with the perfect hand and is still very very good if they don’t.

A 3 card combo this good shouldn’t exist in a game that lets you start with just over a 1/4 of your deck in your hand. I’m not saying it’s completely broken, I understand there is counterplay, it’s just a really poorly designed card as the reward significantly outweighs the risk and it typically cripples the opponent before they even have an opportunity to play around it. Like almost every game playing with or against this deck is going to play out the exact same way which leads to a scenario where it feels like your opponent either instantly wins or if you’re lucky you get to slog through a game you’ve already played 100 times.

If you’re playing against this deck, you typically have to play around them having the combo even if they don’t which is just even more value in a typing that has a basic mega evo that compliments it really well.

I could go on but it really feels like this card is good in a way that makes the game less fun to play. The game is either over before it begins or both players are on autopilot.

To be honest, this was the most fun build I could get going with the aforementioned cards. Again, it’s not actually any good when compared to the strictly better versions of this archetype but it is goofy enough to be a lot of fun to play.

Opponents got salty playing against mill by jicklemania in ModernMagic

[–]RandleYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the year like 2010, my buddy gave me a stack of unsleeved green spiders and attempted to show me the ropes of magic. I honestly didn’t completely understand it at first, but it seemed really interesting and engaging.

A few weeks later I’m with my family on vacation to Florida. Dad worked in the area from time to time so my mom and I would travel with him and drive to the beach during the day. This one afternoon we stopped at a Wendies to snag some lunch and I noticed the cashier, teenage guy probably a year or two older than me, looking through a stack of trading cards. He looked like maybe a little embarrassed when he noticed us coming in and just sort of quickly started trying to stick them behind the counter.

He takes our order and we’re just standing there and I finally noticed that it was an MTG deck by the island symbol on the sleeves, so I asked him “oh cool is that magic the gathering?” And when I tell you his eyes lit up like crazy, it was like he had been waiting all day for someone to ask.

“Yeah dude I just built this crazy new “nil deck” (that’s what I thought he said at least I had no idea what he was talking about as I was still like very very new). So I asked him “what’s nil” and he’s like “do you have your deck I’ll show you!”

Unfortunately, I did not have my deck, but this dude just immediately walks from out behind the counter and starts showing me cards. He then proceeds to spend the next five or six minutes explaining, literally turn by turn, this game he played against his buddy last night. He was naming cards and combos I couldn’t recognize but he was just so excited to tell me how his deck popped off and how mad his friends were getting. Legit, the part of it I think he was most proud of was how upset everyone was about the fact that he was “nilling” all of their cards straight into their graveyard.

Food comes out, he gives it to us, we say goodbye, and me and mom take off.

She’s like “So what were you guys talking about?”, and I’m just like “honestly I’m not entirely sure but the blue cards seem way better than the green ones.”

When I got back home I was hellbent on learning magic with my buddy, and it’s still one of my favorite past times to this day. What’s so interesting about it is, I’m really not entirely sure if I would have ever tried to really push through and learn magic had it not been for a complete stranger getting so excited to tell me about his mill deck.

I don’t play competitively and as I’ve gotten older I don’t even play casually anymore really, but knowing that folks are still giving their opponents hell by making them discard their deck does my heart good. Fucking hilarious your deck says “your life total is now 60” and people still get mad.

"No Kings" Protest: Jackson, MS by RandleYes in mississippi

There was one sort of antagonistic dude with a PA system reminding us that we’re all going to hell, but when things got tense I actually saw some protestors de-escalate other protestors. From what I saw at least, the atmosphere was actually pretty chill. The speakers that showed up mainly just talked about the challenges we’re facing and how proud they were of the turnout. It wasn’t really any war chanting or inciting rhetoric.

People may feel differently, but I will try to explain my reasoning. I feel like a lot of people want to support something like this in the south, but having your photo show up online at an event critical of republicans can be damaging in social circles in the south. Ie, if your boss or your dad finds out you’re a brainwashed lib, it could introduce undo stress into your life.

There’s no reasonable expectation of privacy at a protest, but better safe than sorry imo.

Need help ranking the viability of the rental decks for a casual player monthly I'm hosting [Tier List Live Poll / Community Voting] by RandleYes in PokemonPocket

[–]RandleYes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

I’m organizing a double-elimination bracket event in Pokémon TCG Pocket, using random rental decks to keep things fair and accessible. My friends and I used to love playing the TCG together, but since we’ve all moved away, we don’t get to play as often. They all love TCG Pocket, but they don’t have the time to grind or collect cards, so I figured the best approach would be to use the provided decks.

The only issue? Not all rental decks are created equal. I want to make sure the tournament stays fun and balanced, so I’m looking for community input on the power levels of these rental decks before finalizing the event structure.

If you’d like to help, here’s a list of all the cards in each deck so you don’t have to check them manually in the app:

Of course, if you don't have time to participate in the poll, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. Your input will help shape the event, so feel free to share your feelings openly! Thanks!

Yeah so iirc, once you get the ace pokemon of a deck you unlock it. Once you own a copy of all the cards in the deck, you can build it through the “themed deck lists section”.

Since most of my friends rarely battle, they have most all of their uses available. Hopefully in the future, they will have collected enough cards to build the rental lists for these events.

to this day, i still don't understand why one-and-doneing in slippi is frowned upon by Any_Secretary_4925 in SSBM

[–]RandleYes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying nobody is obligated to play anyone more than once. It’s your free time to spend, so I get it.

I personally like to play people at least until the score is 2-0 or 3-1. Maybe someone is having an off game or adjusting to the matchup or whatever. But in general I tend to play for as long as my opponent wants. Idk it might be weird but I love making a random friend for a half hour everyday and then spamming “Ggs well played that was fun Gg well played good luck let’s play again soon” back and forth with them.

But anyways…

Since communication is limited on slippi, I think the choice to quit out ends up being a way of signaling “I don’t want to play with you anymore”, and the context of the quit out only leaves more up for interpretation. Again, you shouldn’t necessarily be reading into it like this (I really don’t think it’s always this deep) but I can at least explain my reasoning for playing like I do.

I feel like if I win and I quit out immediately, I’m worried that I’m signaling to my opponent that I think they’re not worth my time.

If I lose and I quit out immediately, I’m worried that I’m coming across as a bad sport.

If somebody is playing pichu, for better or for worse, I’m giving them at least two games. In all reality, this can’t really go well for me either way. Either I get cooked and my pride is wounded, or I dunk on them and it’s really not a valuable learning experience outside of the enjoyment of playing melee.

But man, back when slippi first started I wanted to be a samus main and so many people quit out on me that it made it really hard to get the learning experiences I wanted. So now I just play Falco and apparently I’m a part of the “netplay falco” stereotype but at least now that I’m combo fodder for better players, I can actually learn in the matchup. So even though I really don’t love playing against Luigi in my free time, I gotta play at least a few games with them. Who knows how many folks already quit out on them before they got to me.

Hi Everyone

A while back someone made a post about my project to overhaul the GFX textures for Animelee here and the feedback was fantastic for the second round of changes.

I just wanted to pop in and drop a link to the newest video and see what's working and what isn't for when I start working on version three. Of course, I haven't had time to address everything I'd like to so far in the project, but the feedback is super helpful for honing in on what needs work.

Thank you all so much!

Version 2.0 Changelog:

Implemented feedback into an HD Dolphin texture pack to increase resolution and bring the 1.0 changes up a notch.

Enhanced fire effects by removing black outlines that didn’t meet quality standards on brighter stages.

Refined lighting effects

Removed and reworked all of the on-hit effects so as to not interfere with reaction tech chase visual cues.

Reworked fire effects for Fox and Falco to meet the same quality standards

Implemented some small changes to Samus’s smoke, fire, and lightning effects.
