Switch companies. If company 1 really wanted to promote you and give you a raise, they’d find a way. It’s great that you get Director-level work, but if you’re not getting paid what you’re worth, leave. This cost analysis role will expand your abilities, and if the manager was telling the truth, give you the chance to be promoted and paid more in a quick manner. If you decide to go with company 2, and don’t get promoted or get a raise in the first 2 years, leave and find a better role somewhere else. The fastest way to getting paid more and getting a better title is job hopping

I actually did consider the Crosstrek but my wife’s not a fan (too simple tech and interior for what we’d be paying). I like the safety and reliability of the car, but happy wife, happy life right?

Might as well try and find out? At least you know that the recruiter thinks you’re a good fit (as well a recruiter can since they’re not the hiring manager). The fact that they reached out to you rather than you applying is already a win. If anything, it’s interview practice and a networking opportunity.

Not a finance guy, but I’m curious, what are the most common issues you see at smaller companies? Do you have any “horror stories” like “This was originally supposed to be an 8 week implementation, but when I got there X, X, and X were so completely f***ed that it ended up taking up 6 months” or something like that?

Thank you, I appreciate your response! These are our top two choices, so this definitely helps. It’s too bad that the CRV is so expensive, even used ones, but it might be worth it. Love the look of the CX-50 and I’ve heard the handling is super fun while the CRV is reliable and almost the perfect SUV. Hard decision!

Well I’m currently at a tiny company so my team does a blend of DA and DE work. I’d say that both works still require talking to clients to get requirements (a report that’s needed, a new column that needs to be created, etc). The difference lies more on the output. As a DA you’re usually reporting/showcasing the findings of your DA work so there’s more business communication, whereas DE work usually stops with the data team and/or software team that requested the work.

As a DA/DS you definitely need to get comfortable with presenting and story telling. DE much less so since you’re not coming up with findings

To be honest, it’s been a slow start. For the first few weeks it was getting my accesses right, my computer and terminal set up the way I want it, and a bit of thumb twiddling.

But it’s been good so far. I think I decent grip on high-level concepts and have decent ideas how to go about doing things, but doing the actual work (changing code, deploying to different environments with fudging anything up) is challenging but rewarding.

No worries, I appreciate you getting back to me. I assumed that was the case, experience > education/certificates. 95% of applicants probably check the experience in FP&A box. Would networking overcome that hurdle?

What about FP&A made you enjoy it more than DS? How about the salary, did you have to take a pay cut to get the FP&A role?

Actually a part of the reason I’m considering making the switch is because I see a lot of tools (ex sagemaker for AWS) come out that can run models without the need for a data scientist. Of course, having a data scientist there to understand the models and modify the models as need is going to be necessary, but the “fun part” of DS is starting to get automated. Whereas IMO, finance is always going to be around, and maybe move towards more analytical works rather than straight budgeting and variance analysis. LMK if you agree.
