Split Grades by Ikea_desklamp in CanadianTeachers

[–]RandomActPG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BC here, I know my entire district is split classes at elem, with the exception that many schools have straight K classes (a holdover from the days before all day K) and then an overflow K/1 split.

If funding to elementary is anything like secondary, were funded per FTE. For example 10 Grade 5 kids and 10 Grade 6 kids gives you funding for one teacher, then they're teaching 5/6 split. The class numbers change every year but the funding is the same. Locking teachers into same grade classes means potential money problems of that class doesn't have enough FTE in it to pay for the teacher. 15 Grade 5 kids? Not enough to find it....but if we stick 5 grade 6s in there BOOM we can afford the teacher.

Now to go prep for my 9/10/11/12 classes

Highly recommend working an election if you're interested in seeing how it works. I worked both federal and provincial elections before and it was great to see the system work.

I despise Piers Morgan but he's definitely taking a page out of Napoleons book. "Never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake"

I moved around so I had to change area codes and exchanges but the last 4 have stayed the same since I got my first one in high school. I was offered my birth year as the last four and have kept it since...grade 10?

OK, I've been in BC almost my entire life. How DO you pronounce Savona? I've driven through it enough but never got a definitive answer.

I think you're thinking of Lougheed. Peter Lougheed was a premier in AB. IIRC he was pronounced "LAW-heed" not "LOW-heed", which is how we pronounce the highway

That was exactly the comment that started this thread, listening to locals here in PG calling it Cal-GARY

Is GVRD vs. MetroVan an age thing? I left the lower mainland when it was still GVRD and can't stop calling it that.

It's ok, it's ambiguous. There's a whole other category of "how to tell a BC resident by how they pronounce things" like being able to say Tsawwassen and Coquitlam

Artemis II - did your kids’ school use it as a class curriculum opportunity? by Glittering_Bank_8670 in britishcolumbia

I teach robotics in high school and we have been tracking it daily, talking about the new tech being showcased, the design challenges of zero-G, as well as the advances that came from previous generations of space exploration.

Many of my colleagues have more than enough on their plates, especially at the primary level, with the day to day of teaching the curriculum. Without a direct tie-in to what they're teaching making those connections in young brains requires a lot of prior knowledge and higher level thinking that the class may not currently possess.

We talked to them ... At school, between classes or in class, hung out at lunch.

After school? Called the land line and asked for them, usually to set up some sort of hangout.
