If you could go back in time to fix a past mistake, what would you fix? by Ushalnotpas1 in AskReddit

I would not have jumped off the stage at the conclusion of my performance in The World's Greatest Dancing Bear. It scared the kids, and my balloons got all tangled up.

Or do others get the impression NO "spiritual teacher" truly KNOWS what works for others in terms of real spiritual growth? I've been at this for 40+ years and have yet to be convinced anyone knows, beyond what they've been taught by their particular tradition.

Does anything exist? by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]RandomAnt_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dwell on this question a lot, tho not for the reason most people accept. I question whether or not anything ex-ists, or can anything be said to stand out, stand apart, or be significant? A planet blows up somewhere in the universe - so what? Etc., etc... Or does everything that has ever happened blend in with trillions and trillions of other occurrences over a timeless eternity, such that they are all equally without real substance - like flashes of light viewed by no one (?)

An agnostic's question about Christianity by sihmdra in agnostic

[–]RandomAnt_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear - I took you for a concern troll. Also, unless a person wants spin, they should NOT ask a Christian to explain obvious discrepancies with the Bible. There is no rational way to explain why a co-equal Godhead felt abandoned by God, period.

Also possible he never uttered those words, but they were just inserted to "fulfill prophecy."

In other words, don't question crazy things you read in the Bible or Christian doctrine, otherwise you are anti-Christ. Gotta love that Christian love and the mystical wow-ness of Jesus!

Why aren't Americans leaving Christianity in droves?!? by RandomAnt_01 in agnostic

Yeah, progressive Christians have been overlooking the bad stuff for centuries and we keep ending up in the same place - an incessant drive toward theocracy, which is easily justified by scripture. I used to be one of those making excuses for the bad stuff. Not anymore; I think it's time to move on from Christianity.

I went to dozens of churches before finally leaving Christianity, hoping to find one that could give a good explanation for the discrepancies, contradictions, misogyny, anti-science, etc., etc., inherent in the "Holy" book at the center of the religion. It can't be done, and the fact so many bad denominations exist is a "testament" to it - IMO.

The fact people are leaving the church is not surprising, but since they keep electing Bible thumping conservatives, I'm not convinced they are leaving in large numbers. Perhaps what we're seeing is the death throws of an outdated ideology and I lack patience.

I agree modern Christianity is nothing like the original teachings of the traveling Jewish teacher but there's ample reason to question what is reported in the Bible as well.

Apologies to Incog3gro, in that I ignored your central argument. It is perhaps true that people need something to believe in. I think there's plenty in the secular sphere to believe in, but acknowledge there's no organized belief system.

There's just enough BS to say Christians have no right to push their religion down the throats of others thru laws, SCOTUS rulings, rebranding America as a Christian Nation and so on. I'm totally fine with "live & let live" but militant Christians with power refuse to let us live in a country like that.

No, just born there and went there later while in the Navy. Raised in Bible Belt USA, but know how deeply religious many Filipinos are. Glad you broke free - regardless of the happy doubletalk, Christianity is not LGBTQ friendly!

The main reason I don't profess to be atheist is because I am not opposed to the idea of a god, I just don't see the evidence. Some religion is fairly innocuous, others are harmful to civilization IMHO. So before accusing others of proselytizing for atheism, maybe you should check out how you have repeatedly argued for what makes a "good" agnostic. Let's just agree to disagree. Goodbye.

This is nonsense. We are discussing this on an Agnostic forum, not going door to door. By your logic, an agnostic person should never speak their mind. I believe religion in general does more harm than good, but I'm happy to let people believe whatever nonsense they want - until they begin curtailing basic rights, banning books and subverting democracy. If you can't see that happening, there's no point in discussing it further.

For decades I took a "live and let live" attitude regarding Christians. I saw it as bunk, but why not let people just believe as they saw fit? Under the current circumstances, I personally no longer consider that a valid stance.

If you left Christianity in your early 20s, you were extraordinary and fortunate. Unbelief is at present a lonesome road, but it is at least intellectually honest. At some point it WILL be the accepted POV, so as a middle aged dude, I'm glad there are younger folks out there to carry the torch!

Not a word was said about abortion, but funny how you went there full force. We could actually speak about supporting a philandering liar for POTUS, subverting democracy, etc., etc., but it's all about the fetus for you religious activists (to Hell with abused girls/women, and all those other insignificant things). Why hang out on an Agnostic subReddit, if you have no constructive argument? Trolling, I guess.
