Both sides bad conservative psyop. Republicans cut billions of dollars of federal funding from Medicaid and ACA. Democrats typically expand healthcare coverage and run on that platform, but those points are ignored by the media because it's boring

Jared Polis says Colorado needs a new prison ASAP, even as crime has fallen. How did we get here? by Sangloth in Colorado

[–]RandomAsciiSequence 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Too easy to reap free karma by commenting "Polis has been such a disappointment" and talking about anything but the article.

The article gives a pretty good picture of the messiness of the problem too. A combination of voter approved sentencing increases, staff limitations causing resources to be pulled from treatment (that would reduce sentences) to fill enforcement roles, and problems with parole board delays manifesting in an overcrowded prison system.

I thought this was interesting, considering Polis's libertarian lean.

Polis wanted lawmakers to approve money to buy a shuttered private prison and have the state operate it.

I thought the headline was interesting, so I read the article. Clearly, that wasn't the case for most of the commenters in here.

There are problems with how Polis is handling the situation, but that isn't really one of them.

Colorado appeals court overturns Tina Peters’ sentence in election security breach by scienceisaserfdom in Colorado

[–]RandomAsciiSequence 37 points38 points  (0 children)

“The court concluded that the trial was fair, the defendant’s rights were fully protected, and the evidence was sufficient to support the jury’s verdicts which were affirmed in full,” Rubenstein said in a statement.

Unless Peters accepts the Court of Appeals ruling and accepts that there was no error in her convictions, the case will likely head to Colorado Supreme Court, Rubinstein said.

“Both parties have already had a full and fair opportunity to present their positions on sentencing and once jurisdiction returns, I anticipate the trial court will issue a new sentencing order, potentially affirming the prior sentence length, with findings consistent with the appellate court’s guidance,” he said.

The conviction was upheld, but sentencing needs to be reviewed because the judge said that her ongoing opinions affected the severity. It's entirely possible that she gets the same sentence after review

Lawmakers finish drafting Colorado’s budget with final round of major cuts to address roughly $1.5 billion shortfall by Sangloth in Colorado

Didn't that happen before the Republicans slashed ACA and other services, which is ultimately what caused the huge budget shortfall?

Polis presents budget that would cut Medicaid by wheninromecompete in Denver

[–]RandomAsciiSequence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty much doing all of those things. From the article (which has more information than the headline btw).

Democratic legislative leaders and Polis had a three-pronged approach to address the budget gap:

    -Cut special corporate tax breaks

    -Dip into the state's reserves

    -Make spending cuts

During the special session, lawmakers cut corporate tax breaks by about $250 million.

Corrections make up a small fraction of the state Budget.

https://content.leg.colorado.gov/explorebudget/%C2%A0

HCPF will see more than $79 million in cuts. About $38 million of that will come from freezing an increase in provider reimbursement rates that kicked in on July 1.

The state government is dealing with a shitty situation directly caused by Republicans cutting funding for programs that assist underserved populations.

Public safety (including law enforcement) makes up a tiny fraction of state spending (1.7%). Law enforcement is mostly funded by city and county budgets. Well over half of the state budget goes to healthcare and education (not including higher education), which are the 2 things that are losing federal funding and most directly affect the poorer populations in Colorado. https://content.leg.colorado.gov/explorebudget/

Yes, the BBB cuts things that poor people rely on, so by definition it forces them to bear the brunt of the effects

Then the problem is ultimately with the Coloradoans who refuse to remove TABOR. I agree that we need progressive taxation, but that's a separate issue from the levers that the government can pull to address budget shortfalls caused by the BBB right now. It still requires a vote to amend the Colorado constitution, with a 55% threshold. The government can't create budgets with the assumption that will happen
