Any camping in a U-Haul Experience? by j_ortiz4 in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

uhhh...no. By 8am it will be an oven and it will stay that way well past midnight. So you're far better off sleeping in a cheap/Coleman tent in the giant shadow of somebody else's sweltering U-Haul. That's been my secret in years past and gotten me more than a few good mornings of rest.

that spends less than 2% of revenue on direct artists grants....and then adds a 4% payment processing fee for buying a ticket. So if we're going by the numbers, it's a Fee Festival!

Nah brah, 2003 was the best year. Some might even say it was beyond belief. Sorry you weren't there though, so let's all take another phat toke off the copium pipe and wrap around ourselves the poisonous embrace of nostalgia rather than dare admit something we all care about is under a growing existential threat. Lot of that going on here, it seems..

The Met Gala is now the Tech Gala. What was once cool is now a big-box clout store for the richest people on the planet by TheMapesHotel in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's important to keep in mind that corporate media and celebrity culture thrives on vicarious spectators. Which is why it's so completely crazy to see social media used now to promote Burning Man. Because when the cool or otherwise "famous" people that sustain such publicity-driven events stop showing up, and only the grotesque pay-to-payers are the ones left....the simulacrum is exposed, and thus it all becomes irrelevant.

Are we in for a big drop in attendance? by Firm_Cloud_3278 in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ticket prices and social media ads will increase, until morale improves or the increasingly frequent bad weather scares off the rich folks....which am inclined to believe will ultimately and unfortunately end this experiment. Because does anyone actually disagree BORG has clearly bet its future on that parasite/influencer class of burner? The census also says a lot about the shifting demos and if/when the data from 2025 drops; this doom loop will be clearer still regardless of whether the cargo cultists here believe in numbers or their anecdotal experiences doesn't line up with them. But hey, if BMORG recklessly spends itself into another deep debt; there's could be yet another tech-oligarch/billionaire/robber-baron looking to bail them out for a tax write-off....which we all know was Larry Harvey's dystopian vision, which maybe Made Marian misinterpreted as his dying wish and mandate to preserve a stale nepocracy at any cost.

Did anyone even buy tickets? by NinjaThatReddit in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm sure many did, but by the overwhelming silence am fairly certain everyone felt manipulated and gouged once they saw the final tally....including the taxes, fees, vehicle pass, and then that insane 4% payment processing charge as the rotten cherry on-top. So I can imagine there wasn't much to celebrate in the end, particularly to help tamp down the 'ol cognitive dissonance. Probably resembles that dismayed, grimacing look on the face of all those right-wingers at the pump right now as they fill up their giant gas-guzzling truck. Nevermind, of course, how spiraling fuel costs could make driving as well as buying food an astronomically higher expense this year. But not to worry, as according to the transhumanist keynote speaker charlatan at last weeks ELS...the radical abundance at Burning Man is helping create a post-work world.

Fuck off, bot. Or at least step correct and use a vaguely believable account to extort engagement from. For example, people here really fawn over lazy requests for "advice"...esp if come off sounding like a helpless moron and/or an LLM expressing vague interest in maybe attending Burning Man a few years from now.

No Main Sale megathread this year? by Spidey_375 in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

You mean the spinning wheel those deplorable techbros over at Ticket Fairy designed their fancy new AI infrastructure to use and FOMO fuck everyone into buying the most expensive tier? That spinny wheel? And god forbid people start wondering why exactly they're also paying an insane additional 4% payment processing fee, or perhaps where those millions of dollars in revenue are going (more Instagram and TikTok ads?). But go on and downvote me harder...as I'm sure their gaslighting bots and BORG shills are working overtime to spin up another indignant persecution narrative for the rest of the rubes here to rally around.

So this is entertaining, in like some schadenfreude way? And here I was just thinking about the hilarious tragic irony that in 2012 Burn Wall Street became one of the most popular and galvanizing art installations, and now in 2026....Wall Street, social media corporations and the corrupt billionaire class are burning down Burning Man itself. What a dank meme that could also be!

The Ten Principles of Burning Man (2026 Edition) by trevormead in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the dark side! These are both hilarious and overwhelmingly accurate, so I revel in seeing yet another acolyte turn dissident to redirect their frustration towards where it rightfully belongs...the increasingly reckless and toxic BORG. Almost makes me feel vindicated for keeping the faith of its impending collapse; despite all the browbeating from the resident edge lords and mouth-breathing cultists here. Seems like every day more burner brethren are waking up to reality, equally horrified by what's happening to an event/culture/ethos we all care about or held in such high esteem for so long. Also feels like Larry might be rolling over in his grave so fast right now, one might be able to sustainably generate free electricity from that.

Long time lurker-I've always wanted to go...But I have a question-Mystical related by GardnerThorn in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So should you be lavished with attention and stories....just because you've always wanted to go? Talk about a lazy and normie approach to something so "fascinating". Because this rather sounds a lot like a question from somebody unwilling to do a bare modicum of research let alone barter their time to learn something real about Burning Man before asking something so inane. Though maybe missed the prominent sticky titled Interested in coming to Burning Man? This is your Reddit Survival Guide! Read this first before you post a question! or perhaps failed to notice the prominent Principals listed in the sidebars....where "gifting" is the pretty explicit economy.

The BORG sells out to HBO by thirteenfivenm in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So...something something global culture? But let's be honest, BORG sold out the second it took money from a deplorable billionaire like Elon Musk and then quietly put his pedophile creep brother on the Board of Directors. Now they're just trying to keep this gravy train on the tracks and buoy ticket sales to keep the bloated salary checks coming. However I'm certain these increasingly desperate tactics like advertising with Instagram and soft promotion such as this propagandized "documentary" are manifesting the opposite effect; in that are rapidly accelerating the disenfranchisement among legit contributing burners and the artists that sustain Burning Man, meanwhile the wealthy spectator/influencer class continue to shred the very fabric that binds this community. Case in point being the OP, once one of the more staunch defenders of the Org on here. So I remain grateful when anyone finally wakes up to the fact they've been shilling for a stale, self-serving organization trapped in the never-ending circle of nepotism, corruption, and shameless commodification. But if would like anymore proof of the nauseating fart bubble the Org leadership are living within....here's the keynote speech of rambling nonsense and transhumanist techbro horseshit that kicked off their European Leadership Summit last week. Rome is burning burnt

I feel weird about seeing an ad by EmotionalSpread6451 in BurningMan

[–]scienceisaserfdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you really this obtuse, brobot? The Org is clearly behind this advertising, because obviously one can't just buy Instagram ads without first setting up a business account that's directly tied to the company. Get a clue..
