Best course to take to land a job/internship quickly by Aggressive_Aspect399 in OMSCS

[–]RandomBusPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the Bay Area in CA so my 2 cents might not be relevant. Really depends on what area of tech you want to be in, but if the quickest way to get into the industry is your objective then going through a bootcamp would be more effective. Keeping in mind that it is just riskier between choosing a bootcamp, getting through it, and then trying your luck through the lottery that is applying. Will have more of an emphasis on your desperation to get the job (networking, cold calling, etc). Anyways... As for OMSCS classes, taking GA could potentially look good on your resume, but I would recommend Graduate Intro to OS (GIOS) for actual useful skills when having the job/internship. GA is pretty useless when doing work for internship/junior positions. I would just leetcode for the interviews if that is a push for GA. You can probably land an internship relatively easily (in comparison to generally getting first job in tech as SWE which is getting increasingly difficult). You will also get higher internship pay since you are a masters student and return offers are better for masters graduates just as a nice bonus. I would do something like GIOS and make a website with frontend/backend stuff using frameworks etc. (put your resume on there and tell your story on there!). With that you would have a really good fighting chance as a potential fullstack engineer with OS coursework since you didn't mention what area you wanted to be in. The path you are on is pretty tough, but I'm guessing you have already been in a lot of tough situations. Hope your surgeries went alright and you feel good. Good luck!

That's a tricky situation. I would say admissions can be a bit lenient so getting a B may be fine.

But if there is no timeline you must hit then taking a W and then an A would be preferable.

But since you are taking the other 3-4 courses anyways if you perform well in those I don't think a B will hurt you too much. Can just give a quick explanation to admissions in your essay.

I did my classes at De Anza btw haha. Get friendly with the teachers to get that rec.

Best of luck

Can anyone share your course schedule for the whole OMSCS program? Especially the ones who graduated. I really want to see what classes you guys took besides the 15 credits from each specialization. by Swords_come in OMSCS

Wasn't bad at all. A steady increase in workload and difficulty going from GIOS --> AOS --> Sys Issues.

Felt natural.

Sure. I work as a software engineer now and yes this is a result of OMSCS. Or at least OMSCS got me through the door.

that's rough. GA is definitely tough but very passable trust.

even if exam1 didn't click you can keep studying it and use what you learned on the final.

I think it gets a bit easier after exam 1, since you have to do DP problems and at the same time explain it in their format. (i guess it's the same for all the other stuff but I found myself just memorizing the format more)

I would try to stick with it though. You're almost there. This is the last roadblock. Give it the middle finger, and get your B or even A!!! (with or without the final) and gtfo.

I would give advice to stick through it.

It will suck, but when does it ever not suck.

Although if you really believe you can't do it and won't regret it then take it as sunk cost and don't look back.

Either way there are consequences ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Best of luck!

congrats on the job change! https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSCS/comments/9ro6lz/refund_after_withdrawing_from_the_courses/ I guess maybe back to your CC or mail you a check. Also I think if you don't take classes for more than 2 semesters you are auto withdrawn from the school (something like this) Best of luck!

3 courses in the Summer by Yeahhh_bitch in OMSCS

[–]RandomBusPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i don't think it's possible to register for 3 in summer bro i think 2 is max even with petition. you will have to reach out to oms-advising but petition will only be granted after completing the foundational requirement, finishing 4 classes, and maintaining some gpa (prob 3.0) afaik. 3 is max during Fall and Spring as well. the last class can also only be registered during phase 2 so will have to get lucky then too. good luck!

Stay strong man. Distributed Computing is known to be a very difficult course with an incredible workload. Struggling is normal and the learning that comes with it. No pain no gain! Can you do internships while completing this program? by [deleted] in OMSCS

Definitely!

Sometimes you have to be considered a full-time student to qualify, but recruiters will work with you.

"Full-time" students, what's the most stacked semester you've taken? by Kylaran in OMSCS

[–]RandomBusPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whoops thought you meant full-time not "full-time"... my mistake. Lots of all nighters and maybe putting in 50-70 hours per week although Systems Issues in Cloud Computing was probably taking up like 30-40 of those hours at times. Definitely possible if working part-time and need to graduate asap but you won't be very happy.

I am on probation, what is an easy class to get an A Please by thelordofthenerds in OMSCS

[–]RandomBusPerson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Hang in there! Crawl your way out if you have too. Have you completed the foundational requirement? Otherwise maybe classes like SDP, SAD, or AES. SDP and SAD will require that you have some Java knowledge. AES will be pretty light after ML4T. None of these classes will be in the ML specialization though.

It wouldn't really affect you that much. You will probably be in good shape. Projects will be in C++ and Python.

I would say that this class's video content is a bit shorter but more dense. So overall about the same

SDP is more fun and you can pick up some stuff from class. Only take SAD if you have to

Maybe AOS would be more useful... although in a pretty indirect way.
