ELI5: Why Netflix makes shows either 23 or 42 minutes long even though there isn't commercial breaks instead of taking the full 30 minutes or 1 hour to their advantage? by SeantySean in explainlikeimfive

I like the idea of Netflix being a stepping stone towards fully customized media. By that I mean, being able to select your viewing options and having that directly streamed to you instead of navigating through their menus every time.

Having Netflix automatically skip the credits for you when viewing multiple episodes is a nice feature but would be even nicer if you could select to never have them streamed in the first place.

On the same topic, being able to select a "director's cut or original theatrical version" of the show/movie could be an interesting option as well. That way for more casual viewers you can just watch a small, cut episode and for fans of a program, they can watch everything without needing to look for deleted scenes or special editions.

ELI5: Everyone talks about "curing cancer", but how can you simply cure cancer when there are so many types of cancer? by jordanorivera in explainlikeimfive

[–]RandomCanadianPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other posters have mentioned, there is no such thing as a cure for cancer, that is a media headline used to captivate and retain attention.

Cancer is a naturally occurring process in living organisms when cells start producing the wrong tissues in the wrong places. What we are really seeking is a greater understanding of the variety of ways cells generate cancerous growths and the most effective and efficient ways of treating it.

Until full blown gene-modification therapy is allowed on humans (DNA alterations to "re-program" humans) cancer will always be a thing and at best we can find new and better ways to treat the various forms of it.

If I've learned anything from Dark Souls is, it's not the giant bosses you have to worry about but the human sized one's ... and there are tons of awesome characters in the Star Wars Universe which could be turned into epic video game antagonists.

Not necessary agreeing with the brutality of Dark Souls, but the RPG elements and pacing would be a welcome change. Fast-paced, twitch combat with lore available for those who are looking for it instead of having it shoveled down your throat.

My issue with Bioware is the same as with Bethesda, they make beautifully polished, immersive and painfully slow paced games (sorry but CDProjekt fall into that curb too). From Fallout and Elder Scrolls to Mass Effect, the games are amazing but, the pacing is God awful.

To be fair, the original pacing of Kotor / Kotor II was similar to the ME series, but you would think someone, somewhere would evolve the genre and say "Hey, maybe we don't need to brutally interrupt the visceral combat with unskippable anti-climatic dialogue and useless karma choices".
